I don't know if the UK's media have been reporting on this already, but this year's "chosen" candidates to take on the X-Factor this Christmas are quite random, and at the same time a bit of an awesome alternative.

Over 520,000 already joined as I type - let's just hope that actually translates to sales.

Hmm. I saw that the other day.

The thing is whilst it's giving people a feeling that they're fucking someone over (Cowell) I just see it as paying the money to someone else who is also rich and doesn't need it.

So to me it's just a ploy to make someone else rich. I mean, seriously -

Quote:
Fed up of Simon Cowell's latest karaoke act being Christmas No.1?

Me too... So who's up for a mass-purchase of the track 'KILLING IN THE NAME' from December 13th (DON'T BUY IT YET!) as a protest to the X-Factor monotony?

The thing is if people are fed up of the act being number one then the obvious solution is not to buy it. Not buy a song by someone else. So it smacks of advertising to me.

Just seems like a big bunch of people who not only don't like the X factor but also don't like the fact that millions of people actually do.

Silly IMO, bitter and silly.

The people who are fed up with the X Factor hegemony aren't going to buy the X Factor single anyway.

They're buying another song so another song may be #1, or so they hope.

And of course it's advertising. You need to publicise an idea, or nobody will get behind it (they won't know it exists).

Personally, if I was going to buy a record to try to beat the X Factor winner to the Christmas number one, it would be this one.

It's a bit like going to a child's birthday party and pussing all over their presents because Ben 10 is like way too commercial and they should have been given Stikfas instead.

I don't care what gets to number one. I never know what's in the charts, anyway, and only find out what's number one by people making a deal of it, not necessarily from hearing it.

Has it been at least 10 years since anyone gave a flying fuck what was number one?

Not even when that wonderfully bleak "Mad World" cover was #1?

Funny how noone complained when Cowell did you are not alone for charity wasn't it? Noone wanted to compete with that. Noone fucking moaned about it either.

Now. *if* Rage against the machine were to offer all the takings for the song up to charity? then they would have a case. Or the people licking their ass would have a case. But all that is happening is they are telling you (not asking politely) to spend your money on something else.

Bullshit IMO.

Well yes exactly. And tbh a number one carries no fucking prestige whatsoever any more any way. The world simply can't stay in the 80s.

So I don't see why people even give a shit. I couldn't give a rat's ass what goes to number one. If I like how it sounds I will want it, number one or number 129090192090910290.

Infact, usually a number one shows you what not to listen to.

Us? Nobody here probably knew. Oh wait, it's in the charts now. Okay: it's shit. But good that it's for charity. I dunno; what do you want? ;)

Why? If someone supports the RATM-for-#1 mission, then why shouldn't they spend x amount of pence on it? It's entirely their choice.

And, you know, you can give money to charity without having to massage the ego of Colonel Tom Parker wannabes. It's the 1950s again with all the lessons learnt.

I haven't bought a single for the Christmas no 1 since the Cheeky Girls fucked up the last ever Pop Star (or whatever it was).
I am all over this idea. X Factor can drown in it's own shit.

What does getting to number 1 achieve, money-wise?

People buying RatM isn't going to make fewer people buy the X-Factor song, so is there another financial gain from getting the number 1 spot?

Cowell did that song for charity. Yeah, right. And I've got some prime land for sale, perfect for building houses on. Meet me at my office on 37 Swamp Drive, Flood Plain, Ashton Under Water.

Like I am sure it was a total coincidence that Peter Kay announced his live tour while his charidee single was out.

Yeah by doing what the tell you. I can't remember being told to buy the x-factor single, though. Or listening to music and chasing meaningless numbers by listening to music because you're a subhuman who likes numbers and are a cunt or something.

Granted, but it's would be nice to tell them all that actually, they can't control the charts just because they have a TV show.

They don't control the charts though. It's cynical, true. But you don't *have* to buy anything. ITV is a commercial TV station, many people enjoy the x-factor, even if it is just a 4 month long advert for the single (and the album of covers) at the end.

And, why Rage Against the Machine? Why not a Christmas song FFS? I would've nominated The Darkness' "Don't let the Bells End", a marvellous tune from a few years back.

I was going to do this, then I thought "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" and didn't.

And I have no problem with soulless businessmen monopolising the pop charts by pimping out vapid wastrel after vapid wastrel from the conveyor belt of corporate hegemony. If you can make money off idiots, using idiots, then all power to you.

Do they count downloads off iTunes as part of the charts now? Or do they still have their own separate chart?

12 months? I think the last single I bought would've been something from Metallica's 'Reload'.

I bought Killing In The Name when it first came out. I'm not buying it again.

I've bought singles from iTunes, but I don't think I've bought a CD single in the last year.

Now I can't stop iTunes putting it on my iPod even though it puts the full album on there as well. Yay two copies?!

Being a metullurgist, we generally get EPs and MCDs instead of singles. However if Katatonia get some singles out from the new album I'd be up their trousers like a whippet.
