I know there's a thread for BAD cover versions, but is anyone aware of any GOOD cover versions?

The Gossip covered Careless Whisper and it's awesome. I loved the original but I love that version just as much.
Also Placebo covering Kate Bush, Running Up That Hill. A beautiful song which brings back very sad memories for me.

The Within Temptation cover of Running Up That Hill is even better.

I've talked about this before, but Johnny Cash singing 'Hurt' is just about the most emotional song ever. I can't honestly say I've heard Reznor singing it though.

Favourite would probably be George Thorogood's 'Hellbound Train' which is a cover of Chuck Berry's 'Downbound Train'. Some of Black Sabbath's stuff has been covered really well too with Pantera's 'Planet Caravan' and Cathedral's 'Solitude' standing out, but also 1000 Homo DJs' version of 'Supernaut' and SOAD's 'Snowblind' being rather good too.

Jeff Buckley - 'Hallelujah'.

Josh Ritter's version of Dylan's 'The River'.

And, as a heretic, I secretly prefer Take That's version of 'How deep is your love' to the Bee Gees' original.

Many years ago when Newport had a thriving band scene, a friend's band called the MPs did a stonking version of Boys Don't Cry. T'was very good.

I have it on a tape somwehere, but have no means of playing tapes anymore.

As for real bands and cover versions I'll have to have a think about that one.

My old band used to do a cover of 500 miles by the Proclaimers. Whilst I hated playing it, we became pretty well known for it.

We then spent the rest of the time in the band trying to prove that we had other songs.

I love them both.

I remembered about the Cash version last week and so finally bought A Man Comes Around. Good album.

I quite like Foo Fighter's cover of Pink Floyd's 'Have A Cigar'. Electric Six's cover of 'The Model' by Kraftwerk makes me smile also.

the only one that i recall that surpasses the original is Agalloch's rendition of "Kneel to the Cross" (Sol Invictus). And i'm a fan of both bands
