This is a list I want to make (and the highlights of which will probably end up on the blog I too frequently neglect).

As you're such a well-rounded bunch of games-literate (and just plain literate) people, I'd like your suggestions.

Here's one to get the ball rolling: Tim Rogers on Super Mario Bros. 3

I reserve the right to decide that either your game is not great or that your review is no good, but if everything goes according to plan, that's where most of the fun of this thread will come from.

Thanks!

And, if you can get a copy cheap, everyone should.

Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines is awesome.

Interesting call. I gave up half way through when I played it at release, but picked it up again when it was £3.95 on D2D a few weeks ago. I sort of enjoyed it, but the years have not been kind: the combat is now pathetically bad, and I suffered a game-breaking bug just going through the tutorial.

As for the review, I think there's too strong a whiff of Kevin Leddins to the first few paragraphs for it to be truly "great".

Kieron Gillen's Earth Defence Force 2017 review nails what's great about it:

Weird to see Gillen writing Marvel comics these days...

This is possibly my favourite by Ryan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlWlto-Yyno

Basically: No bullshit, he is just reminiscing about a game that he loves, and he loves for the right reasons.

What's with the wierd pirate-esque style? Is there some in-joke I'm not getting? I have to say the "ho ho ho" and the "oh no me hearties" and the "Yaaarrrghhh!" don't really do it for me, and it doesn't seem like a review that's aged very well (although I might have been prejudiced by the Web 1.0 site it's hosted on).

I like that a lot. A great no-nonsense review.

That's a good one. I'm less convinced by Rab's God Hand Review, so instead I'll probably go for either his Super Mario Galaxy or Oblivion review.

Am I right in thinking Stu's Sensi review isn't online? Sadly it's not where I'd hoped to find it.

Is Tim Rogers better in the original language or something, because the English translations of his stuff that I've read don't seem to make any sense at all.

Heh. Maybe you read too fast? Although admittedly he can be a bit hit-and-miss.

The PC Gamer review of Saints Row 2 (Tom Francis I think it was) convinced me to get it. Can't find a link to it though.

Tsu, oh aye - the review isn't actually that good. Duncan admits that he never got past level one for example!

But at the time, his style really resonated with me. It wasn't about the games but rather the humour and the silliness. I don't really go in for the silly stuff but I do try to have some larks when I write.

It was the idea that each person on YS had a style. Same with Crash. Some of them were gash (especially at Crash) but I like people who have some personality rather than some Eurogamer toss-clone agonisingly following a style guide.

That's because reviews used to be entertainment in itself. I don't want someone blandly reciting game facts at my face when I read a magazine. Fuck sterility. Fuck facelessness.
