News that the first person jailed for the offence of not talking in a police interview has been judged no threat to national security and suffers from a mental condition associated with paranoia and a fear of authorities is unlikely to win RIPA Part III new supporters.
So, that civil liberty, innocence til proven guilty and right to silence, eh? >:( :'(

I guess part of the problem is that because encryption isn't routinely used, anything that appears in ciphertext is immediately marked as suspect.

But, yes, a horrible case resulting from a bad law.

I had something similar when they found my Games Workshop models in my suitcase when I was coming back from Las Vegas and they accused me of summoning daemons and witchcraft. I bitterly repented while being burned at the stake, let me tell you.

Well, the time to complain about this would be when they passed the law making it illegal to refuse to decrypt things that the police want to look at.

Oh, we did.

Apparently the new inspector at charl's place has literally said "If you see someone on a bike, stop them, and if they can't prove ownership there and then, have it and them."

An inspector. Who had to compete for the role.

They need a warrant, right? So, is it actually any different from refusing to let them into your house when they have a warrant, and being arrested for doing so?

I'd love one of them to nab him next time he's on a bike. Who on earth can prove ownership of a bike on the spot - unless they're riding it home from the shop?

Exactly. I imagine it's enormously unlawful without suspicion - basically harassment and other forms of abuse of power. But now the official - and presumably authorised - position of at least one station on Merseyside.
