How many of these lines or lines remarkably similar do you think will be uttered during the film 2012, which I am off to see in two minutes? List the five numbers you reckon are a sure bet and I'll get back to you with who got the closest. (Secretly looking forward to this!)

The 2012 Sweepstake Checklist

19: “We call it the butterfly effect…”

20: The President: “What does this mean?” Advisor: “It means that Earth has something weeks/days left to live.”

21: “Hold me!” (At moment of couple facing death)

23: Over montage of building an ark/spaceship, PA voiceover: “Forty eight hours until Earth-Destruct, forty-eight hours! We must work faster!” etc.

24: “You never gave up on anything in your life, don’t give up now!”

25: “All my life, I never completed anything. Always turned away. This time, things are different…”

26: “It’s a new beginning.”

27: “What is there left?” “Hope.”

28: “Wait! Wait my baby!”

29: “Wait! I left the gas on/my wallet/my precious photos!”

30: “Hello, we’re lawyers. ARRGH!”

I reckon John Man and his entirely mediocre, white family (Mrs. John Man, John Man Junior, and John Man Junior the Girl) will put aside their generic familial problems to escape the destruction of america (except not so much that it'll change anything about their place in the world once the day is saved by the initially-derided weird scientist) and the parts of the rest of the world that go on postcards, and find themselves and their dog closer and more mediocre + white as a result. Possibly they will be saved by the noble sacrifice of a black man or an arabic type, just to prove that non-whites can be mediocre and white, too. Not to the extent that they remember his name or anything afterwards though, obviously.

Topical humour that very nearly makes an explicit mention of sex will feature twice.

I say all of the above, too. Plus "do not panic" followed by a hilariously juxtaposed scene of mass panic.

I don't think it's legal to say "Don't panic" without adding "Mr Mainwaring" after it... citation needed from legal types though.

(Does anyone actually care about spoilers for this film? I can ditch all spoilers if no one is fussed, and it IS an explodey movie following a well-trod formula...)

12: (Looking out of window, hushed shocked awe) "Oh my God..." (I think, there was lots of looking out of windows exclaiming in hushed tones while mournful strings played)

17: "HOLD ON!" (They also shout "Buckle up back there!" about a half dozen times)

18: (Basically - as in explaining...) "The plates of the earth float on a sea of lava, and grind against each other..."

32: The dog inexplicably survives.

Almosts, as in scenes that danced around these but always phrased them differently, or missed little bits of the equation:

3: "Get to the helicopter!" (It's a plane.)

13: "What do we tell the people?" (There's a big debate as to whether to tell them and when to tell them and by whom, but not what - damnitt.)

14: "Who will decide who lives and who dies?" (They actually decide off screen pretty early.)

16: "Why did daddy leave?" Plus penetrating question raised by innocent child. (The two leads ARE divorced, shock! But at no point does either child ask this. Cusack probably beat her.)

23: Over montage of building an ark/spaceship, etc. (There's countdowns a plenty as to how long they've got to implement the plan, not one of construction though. Tchaw.)

26: "It's a new beginning." Massively implied, not actually stated.

Long review. Long review! There is surely no way to spoil this film. It is the same film as everyone in the world would write in their lunchbreak if asked to write a generic hollywood apocalypse film.

I went to see 2012 with Pete last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's the only Emmerich film I've seen since Independence Day that I've actually liked. Probably because 2012 also contains a
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
ludicrously cheesy speech from the US President. Not quite to the same quality of Bill Pullman's effort, but Danny Glover hams it up manfully.


Also, I would like to point out that this film contains the "worst science in a film ever". Mutated Neutrinos my arse.

Ahh, yes. But The Core runs with it rather delightfully, its the ultimate Irwin Allen film and is secretly ace. "We call it Unobtanium." Also, it's the only disaster film featuring characters I've actually genuinely liked.

I think I forced Rixondale to watch this at a meal and movie, I can't remember what he thunk.

Don't think there was one, actually. In fact, there was remarkably "NOOOOO!" moments in the film for an end of the world movie. In fact whenever Cusack and Co. were in peril it was played partly for silly laughs. Lots of kablooie, though.

Well, sort of. In fact it has near the beginning scenes of rioting in London on the news with scrolling text saying the Olympics have been called off, and then - rather uneasily - that famous footage of the poll tax riots and that woman being trampled to death by a mounted charge. 8)
