So what do people reckon about all that, then? I can't remember my last.fm password, apparently once I do I can knock out a playlist and run it in-game, but facebook appears to be a standalone app though I haven't an account and don't want one. I thought you could link your FB page to your Live account mind you. Hopefully those without any interest in gamerscores can block that from their feeds specifically other than your normal content, or maybe it'll annoy everyone off FB forever and back to that equally good social networking invention, the internet proper. Jesus, I'd swap Facebook for Googles Wave, Mail, Youtube, Blogger and Picasa in the minds of the masses any day.

And so to Twitter. I knocked my account on the head some time back because twitter is well annoying and I hadn't read anything interesting on there in weeks. Excellent follower:following ratio I binned off and all. So yesterday I reregistered in anticipation of being able to check tweets while, say, Fuel is loading. Nice distraction and useful once again. Seems to me there's fuck all on the guide button for it once it's up and running, it's just another app selectable from randomish/esque places in the NXE.

Anyone got this going in the middle of a game?

All in all colour me not quite arsed.

I don't think you can do Last FM in game? Seems good, but I would rather have spotify. Hell I'ld buy a chat pad thingy for Spotify.

Twitter might come in useful if I break all my computers and have to desperately contact the internet for help.

Facebook can fuck off.

Theres a nice feature on the facebook app, where you can share your xbox data, so people you didnt realise had an xbox can add you as a friend from the app. Works the other way round as well I think, xbox friends you didnt realise had a facebook account.

I'd prefer Spotify too, but surely there's no point in last.fm on 360 unless you can do it in game, being a games console and all? Why wouldn't you just use a computer or phone for it instead?

Yeah I had a quick look earlier and without a chatpad I don't really see me using it at all, I already can access my Facebook and Twitter from my iPhone and my PC. It will probably be a lot more useful for people who don't have a PC or maybe people who still live with their parents and only have an Xbox in their room?
I'm not going to complain about it but I don't see me really using it.
I had a lastfm account *ages* ago but don't even know the login anymore-I would use it again if I could play it while gaming but otherwise I would just have the PC or my iPhone attached to the speakers. I like having my own music while I'm playing FIFA.

I one million percent agree that we should get iPlayer, that was dead handy on the PS3. I do like the sky player mind you, we watched Jurassic Park 3 in bed the other night and I'm watching South Park the Movie right now which is handy.

In reality it is all pointless for me because I use the same speakers/screen for my PC and 360.

This is the first time I've used Last.FM and I think it's ace!

I can imagine a lot of other people being in the same boat as me too so this can surely only be a good thing.

Twitter is also great too. I don't know what people were expecting but it shows your messages.. everyone you follows messages and lets you update it. I'm sure it won't replace my phone/PC for using it but that doesn't matter. I've got a chat pad and I think it works exactly as it should.

So there.. although, the Xbox version of Vidzone can fuck off. 200 points for a music video? No thanks.

For me, the Last.fm app is the most worthwhile of the new apps. While it's a little bit hamstrung (you can't even use it to visit your Top 100 artists or tracks - even the iPhone app allows you to do that!) I do like the way the radio station app glides in photos of the artist you're listening to. Maybe less of a draw for Last.effemers who aren't as pathetic as me, but there you go. The Twitter app seems rather useless. It won't even let you check out who's replying to/mentioning you, which defeats the purpose somewhat. I'm not a big Facebooker, so can't really comment on that.

Echoing the views of other commenters, I wish the 360 would offer an iPlayer app, or even find a way of getting YouTube on the 360. If the relatively underpowered Wii can do iPlayer. there's not really any excuse, and Xbox 1 (if haxxored) could just about manage YouTube, so there's not much of an excuse there. Having just discovered the majestic fusion of Win 7's Windows Media Center and the 360, I'm a bit of a fan of that right now. Putting a bunch of "folder.jpg"s in the correct movie folders makes everything look utterly spiffing, I have to admit. And, naturally, I own the DVDs of every single thing I'm folder-jpegging, so me saying this is morally sound. Obv.

Speaking of which, my Wii had a message this morning saying that the iPlayer had been updated - I hadn't realised it was actually out as a channel yet. So I gave it a whirl and it works rather nicely. :)

  • Twitter is much more easy to use on my iPhone
  • Facebook I rarely use, but I concede that looking at photos could be useful
  • Last.FM could be good if it scrobbles stuff you listen to from your HDD/external media device
  • Sky Player is pretty useless as I can't watch any channels apart from UK Gold and Sky News

The Facebook thingy is excellent for looking at pictures. They look better on there than they do on the website.

Downside... MrsP now knows my facebook password after watching me type it in.

Nobody seems to have mentioned the streaming HD movie thing. It seems to work really well, shame there's fuck all on it that I'd ever want to watch, or if there is I already saw it about a decade ago.

erm mine does. its sporadic at best but it will eventually scrobble them. Do you have last fm. on your computer? because it scrobbles them when you hook it up by usb.

I think the Twitter app is sluggish and feature-poor (cannot look at twitpics, cannot list @replies, no DM support I could see) and surprised it was a standalone app and not part of the dashboard. The Facebook app at least looks a bit more featureful but was still sluggish. I don't see me using either feature.

Last.fm could be neat to use the radio station that the service can build for you. Is that confirmed in-game? I'd be surprised.

It's an old slang word meaning to beat up or mug someone.

Last.FM seems to have appropriated it to mean "upload the name of the music I am listening to to the internet, for some reason".

But I can't shake the prior meaning.

It's when you put a winky in your mouth all the way to the base then rub the bollocks together in an anticlockwise motion.

I thought it was a contraction of "scrotum gobbling".

Are you sure? Everywhere I looked on the net seemed to say that it didn't.

I'll plug it in and check my account when I get home. If it shows up as me having played Florence + The Machine a metric fuckton over the past few weeks, it's bang on the money.

It works by the iPhone updating the play count doodad in iTunes, and then the last.fm app on your PC examining that and back-scrobbling. Which is a clever workaround the no-background-apps thing, in theory, but doesn't seem to work very often for me. I'd much prefer the last.fm app running on the iPhone did it live.

i thought the innovation were linking game stuff to your twitter*/facebook accounts, not just standalone apps (which are better on my iphone, as said),

the zune film thing works rather great though and last.fm isn't available here (as is the iphone app)

(yeah, my xbox came back from it's third rrod)

* even though true achievements.com seems to have it covered

Compare this to what we had just a couple of generations ago.

We had consoles that played games and music CDs. Then we could play DVDs and even then we thought we were lucky!

Now we have consoles that are opening the flood gates of the internet to a lot of people who may or may not normally be able to have access to these things. I for one have never used Last.FM but since logging into the Xbox version last night, I shall go back and investigate further. I think it's a great little tool... And let's not forget, it's free!

The same goes for Twitter and Facebook. I don’t particularly like Facebook but I do like Twitter and I think it’s great having it available all in one console in an easy to use package.

So there we have it, I welcome these changes to the console! The more it can do (and the easier it can make these things) the better for all of us.

Don't have Twitter, don't care.

Have Facebook but don't use it. Especially don't want it telling people on my friends list how much I'm playing, as one 'friend' is my teem leedaah.

Downloaded Last.fm and hoped it could play me some new music. Except it wanted me to sign up, and I couldn't be bothered.

I wouldn't even waste my time tweeting it if I had Twitter, YOU ALL ALREADY KNOW.

I think you should get a special balloon and siren that will sound the next time you find something new you do like. It'd be like that bit in the Simpons when Homer bowls a perfect game.

Xbox Twitter is utterly pointless. It would've been better woven into the fabric of the Xbox so that the inanities would pop up on the screen somewhere when they're posted. But no, we have to specifically sit there watching them come in on a dedicated screen. Fuck that.

I looked at Twitter. Guess it works, ish, but not much use to me as Twitter is easier used from the laptop, as it takes to long to write an onscreen message with the xbox pad.

Didn't look t the other things (Facebook and that). It would be good if they made it so that you could set it for Twitter announced when you were playing a game or were in a party, etc, so that folks might see this on Twitter and join you - only if that was an option you could choose, though.

We watched a movie on Sky Player the other day and it worked really well. Good quality video, considering, no problems with buffering, etc, really wide choice of films, too - there are hundreds (we watched 'Burn After Reading'). Of course you have to put up with a jet engine noise in te background.

Just looked at the Wii iPlayer channel, is great!

last.fm good.
Downloaded facebook, don't really see the point, it's much easier just looking on the computer. The only 'good' thing is you might find people on your facebook who have xbl who arnt on your friends list and be able to play with them.

That would have been awesome.

Xbox: "Blip Bloop"
*thingy flashes on screen*
Dimrill: "Woohoo! An achievement."
Me via Twitter: "My kettle is a cunt!"
Dimrill: "Fucksocks!"
