Does anyone know if you can get a light or device for a bayonet fitting that will switch on the bulb when it detects movement?

My garage has a bayonet fitting as well as two fluorescents. However both have to be turned on manually which can be a pain at this time of year. By the time you've reached the switch you are at the door anyway.

What would be cool is if the bayonet fitting could just come on when it detects movement. There's loads of adaptors that can do this for dusk until dawn or on a timer but what I am looking for is movement only.

Just something that slots in and works. Can't be doing with rewiring the entire garage for abit of convenience.

Anyone own such a device? Do they exist? Half hour of googling seems to suggest not in this country. There are battery powered versions but I want something that can be inserted into a fitting and then forgotten about.

Any ideas?

The lightbulb in my bedroom blew out today. Does anyone know if there are new lightbulbs available for sale? One of the ones which lights up, nothing fancy.

Loads of battery powered PIR lights for sale, but no mains ones unless you want a flood.

You can of course fit a PIR in place of the light switch but that potentially seems like a alot of effort.

I guess this will prove a fruitless search. I'm looking for a product with no demand!

At first I thought that this sounded like a great idea.. But then I thought 'what if you stop moving?'

It'll get dark.. That's what.

The PIR sensors usually turn off after a preset time. Like a security light.

CPC have whole fitting you can install that will do the job but its pricey at about 50 quid. And all I want is something that is plug and go, not a whole wiring job.

Think this idea is a dead loss. Bah!

Can you not get a couple of stick on LED lights that you put on the wall near either entrance to the garage that you simply press to come on and then go out after, say, 10 secs.

This kind of shit is what litters the Innovations catalogues. You could get the Mrs one of those battery powered neck massagers while you're at it as well ;)

I want it to automatically come on so when the door opens the light will come on when I am reversing in and will stay on until I depart.

I don't really want to get into the whole rewiring thing, neither do I want to have to get out of the car to turn the light on.

There are LED battery solutions but the problem is they are designed to light cupboards, not a garage. I have a convenient fitting there which I had hoped I would be able to use.

What I do have is a roof mounted socket. CPC sell a complete 60 watt fitting with a PIR for 50 quid. But that seems steep considering you can get a decent flood with PIR for half the price.

Stick some lights to your car, that come on when you are reversing. You could call them reverse lights. :p

Could you not get one of those battery powered security lights? I don't think they would require that much hssle. Until you have to change the batteries, obv.

Would a motion detecting light switch do you sir?

http://www.uk-automation.co.uk/motion-s ... -1264.html

You'd have to do a little bit of wiring, but even I - a cackster in the extreme when it comes to DIY - can change a light switch.

Looked at those last night. Problem is that the light in question is on a bathroom style draw string rather than a switch. This is why I wanted the all in one solution. The fluorescents are on a switch but you should not use standard PIR's with them.

I can stand at your light switch if you want. Only £2 a month.

Could you extend the pull cord so that it goes through a series of pulleys and winches so that when you car drives over a trip wire, the light comes on?

Appreciated. Now to find the UK version.

Part of having the light is to aid reversing as well. I have to reverse down a slope and at a slight angle to get into the garage. I then have to ensure I don't hit various obstacles. On a clear night its easy but in the heavy rain it can be a pain seeing in the mirrors when you are reversing into a void lit only by the reversing light.

I don't want to have to get out of the car, get soaked , walk to the back of the garage, turn the light on, etc. It's not laziness, it's practicality.

There are loads of free 13a sockets so another option could be a security light. But this seems like overkill but might be the way to go. Might be a question of just finding a low wattage security light.

You run the risk of being crushed by the GT Sport* as I reverse.

I'm disappointed. I'd hoped we were going to be discussing the existential conundrum of whether light actually exists or not.

Design an elaborate system involving cams so when you open the door the light comes on & when you close it it goes out.

EDIT: I see Bobby has a similar idea :D

Chinny.. Wouldn't it be possible to fit a garage door opener to your door? Reason I say that is because they all have lights built in which provide adequate lighting and turn themselves off after about 15 mins.

I know they're not cheap, but it would save having to lug the door open and closed all the time.

EPIC FAIL!

The garage has an automatic opener thing. It has no light. Therefore the statement "they all have lights built in" is not correct.

For whatever reason the nutcases who used to own this place splashed out on two sets of automatic garage doors (1 of which is on a shed and therefore pointless) but not automatic lights. But I believe they owned motorcycles so they would have just driven straight in and used their headlights. I can only reverse in because if I drive in forwards I'll hit the bottom of the car. In fact I had to mod the garage for the GT sport by adding two planks of wood at the bottom of the ramp so the car gets some extra height before the really steep sudden bit.

GT Sport? elighten me. What the heck is a GT Sport?

As for the openers.. Excuse my spoiled yankness :D I'm used to a min 3 doors and two of them being auto open and having a 'homelink programmable door opener button thinger' on the interior roof of my car :)

Edit : A golf?

Stick in a light in the circuit that opens the door, then, when you open the door, the light turns on. It's dead easy, and you could possibly cannibalize a timer from an extractor fan to make it be on for after the door has opened.

It's a 2 litre 140bhp diesel Golf with the sports pack. So it's fast but it'll give you upwards of 50mpg without you having to watch your right foot.

I enjoyed the look of disappointment in the eyes of a Focus driver at the lights on Friday night. Granted in 1st gear he was quicker but once I hit 2000rpm in 2nd I was away. I :luv: that turbo!

A possible but I think it's all self contained. I'd rather not meddle with it.

For under a tenner you can get a 150 watt security floodlight from Maplin that has a PIR. I'm starting to think that it might be a better bet.

I've missed a conversation about lights and such? Damn.
Anyway, you probably just want to buy a PIR security light and add a bit of flex and a plug to it, as mentioned. Homebase even do them cheaply. I have one from them with two halogen spotlights on it in the yard, and a different kind above the front door with an 11W CFL bulb in it.

My car doesn't actually set it off, but I imagine a GT SPORT, reversing towards it, probably would.

Something with a CFL or similar would be fine. Halogens are dead cheap (Maplin have them for a tenner) and there are spare sockets including one on the roof that would do the trick.

Might be a B&Q job as we have vouchers to use.

I put a turbo on my Tiburon and left it there until I saw my petrol bills lol. The car was pretty fast without it (being tuned with loads of other engine mods) but the turbo just made me want to bury my foot 24/7, if only for that lovely slurping sound. Good thing I didn't leave it on there really, I think the new owner would have been dead. Can you imagine a 16 year old girl trying to wrestle with 220BHP and infinite torque steer?

Wait. That's a Hyundai Coupe, right? So 120-150bhp from the factory, depending on engine choice? I call shenanigans, you can't get that up to 220bhp without blowing gaskets, clutches, and the transmission. That's +50% power output you're talking about. What boost pressure were you running?

To be fair to JC, he could quite possibly have added other modifications to the car along with the turbo but just didn't feel like listing off a huge load of upgrades.

So to wrap this up....

On Wednesday I popped to B&Q to see what lighting they had. Although there were loads of cheap 500 watt halogens available cheaply this seemed like massive overkill.

They also had some outdoor 60 watt spotlights with PIR's. I purchased 2, one for outdoors and 1 for the garage. The outdoor one will be used on a wall that faces the house. As its a spot it won't disturb the neighbours if we come home late.

Also purchased a reel of cable, a couple of plugs and some of those grip things that hold the cable to the wall.

After a survey of the garage I located a spot where the light would work. The garage has a wooden staircase and there is abit of wood that sticks out that I was able to affix the light to. In addition there were already some clippy things fitted across the roof beam that lead to a socket on the opposite wall.

I wired the beast up. First struggle was the plug. Not that I'd forgotten how to wire a plug, just the finer points such as the live needing to be shorter than the rest of the wires. Once I remembered this it became much easier! I was also hindered as I'd got fairly heavy duty cable as it was cheaper to get 1 reel that would also work for the outdoor install.

Wired it all up, but the blasted thing didn't work properly. Turned out the PIR was faulty. The giveaway should have been that the bulb had already been installed in the light. I assume the light had been returned to B&Q as faulty as their staff had just bunged it back on the shelf!

Luckily I had the second unit so I didn't need to take out the entire thing, just swap the light and PIR elements.

It's now all in and working. Needs some fine tuning with the timings but am very happy with it. Of course it was a much longer job than I would have liked but I can look at my handywork and feel proud.

Wait. That's a Hyundai Coupe, right? So 120-150bhp from the factory, depending on engine choice? I call shenanigans, you can't get that up to 220bhp without blowing gaskets, clutches, and the transmission. That's +50% power output you're talking about. What boost pressure were you running?

Actually I was wrong. There was about 220HP at the flywheel and about 200 down at the tires. Fucking yanks.. I spoke to my mate Dell earlier and he told me the 220 was at the fly. EDIT. About 4lb IIRC.

Yeah it was far more than just the turbo as Gaz said.

Had a high lift cam from the 1.8 engine, AEM cold air intake, lightweight flywheels, throttle body bypass (common trick on that engine), high perf wires (13mm) with quad platinum plugs, mustang injectors, cat removed, new manifold etc.

I originally built the car N/A. I didn't want a turbo because the Tibruon/Coupe's ECU doesn't like Turbos. The turbo itself came from an STI (mate of mine worked for Subaru in Cherry Hill NJ and got me it free. It needed new bearings but that wasn't that hard, he got me those too. So basically before the turbo even went on I was pushing pretty good figures for N/A.

Any way, modded the manifold, fitted the oil lines etc and got it all set up.. Was fun, but the timing went out a lot due to the Hyundai's ECU always reverting back to factory settings. Basically the way their ECU is set up it 'learns' from a reset (remove battery discharge leccy system by stomping the break pedal) and then if you thrash the nuts off it (cue lots of misfiring and black smoke as it works out the air ratios etc) it drives OK. Problem is it reverts. So you constantly have to do it and it became a PITA. Only way to truly over come it is to fit a piggy back ECU and those are big bucks. As it was the turbo system came in pretty much free (even got a small IC for nothing from another mate and all the plumbing for the IC) but the tuning problems and fact I was attracting even more attention than usual sealed the deal. I took it all off about 7 months after fitting it.

Just compressing some vids I have of it :)

Here we go. Roughly 8 sec 0-60 N/A (not pushing it). Note in the video the tranny slips and dumps the car into neutral? that answers your query about it coping with that kind of power. IE - it didnt and was a bit fucked in the end lol.

Got a couple more compressing now, will post those when they're done :)

Turbo fitted (this was about two days before the other video, before we removed it all).

Note that the tires are just peeling and cannot get any traction what so ever. Was typical tbh, masses of torque steer etc. Should have really fitted an LSD but that would have been big money and major work.

Here's a cool vid :)

Bloke getting out of the STI wagon - Dell, my mate who did my setup.

Bloke getting in and revving and shitting his pants? me :D

600 horses. Not to be sniffed or sneezed at. Got a wrecked STI and went to work, fitted a Greddy spud, massive IC, uprated fuel lines, injectors, oil pump, fuel pump, HKS exhaust...Serious shit.

Chinny. Sorry for the hijack mush. Glad you got your light problems solved :)

Found some more pics :)

Cam swap.

Image

Flywheels (not the best pic, but I was only swapping the cambelt).

Image

Refurb turbo body waiting for the new impellor shaft and bearings (had all been painted etc)

And back to NA right before I sold it. Never could be bothered to refit the heatshield for the manifold. I think it got lost somewhere along the way :(

Home Bargains had motion sensitive battery powered lights for about £3 when I was in the Middlesbrough branch yesterday.
