Lord Mandelson, the business secretary, warned internet users today that the days of "consequence-free" illegal filesharing are over as he unveiled the government's plan for cracking down on online piracy.

Mandelson, speaking at the government's digital creative industries conference, C&binet, confirmed that the internet connections of persistent offenders could be blocked - but only as a last resort from the summer of 2011.

It could be worse, they could be going to prison for theft.

And the unlikely ally of Piracy? GCHQ - because cracking down on piracy means an increase in use of products that encrypt, which means that spying is harder.

You couldn't make it up.

The pay-off for tough penalties against persistent file-sharers would be a more relaxed copyright regime, Mr Mandelson said.

The details of it would need to be hammered out at European level but it would take account of the use of copyright material "at home and between friends", he said.

It would mean that, for example, someone who has bought a CD would be able to copy it to their iPod or share it with family members without acting unlawfully.

So darknets will be legal then?

Or putting a link to a MP3 download on my Facebook page?

This has already been mentioned in B&B, and I'm not paying £50 copying my post over. Thread merge?

Edit: Though, um, it is literally my response to zaphod, which seems a waste of moderatorial effort.

Check this:

Lord M: We've identified you downloading The Bangle's Greatest Hits through your ISP. Although I acknowledge your obviously classy taste in music, it is still a bad thing hence you must be punished.

DO YOU ANSWER:

1) Yes, you got me - Admit it and take it like Mr French

2) Deny it and say you've got a secure wireless connection, it's only me that can get in and out of it. - You've fucked yourself here, as if it wasn't you, and could only have been you, was it fucking Aslan?

3) Open WiFi, matey, could have been anyone. - I'm sure the HDD will be at the bottom of a canal by now, in a binbag with a CO2 cartridge attached to a balloon read for retrieval once the heat is off.

I'd do #3 every time.

Also, open WiFi connections are most citizenlike and should be encouraged.

My O2 router shipped with an unsecure default admin password that could be dictionary attacked in seconds. Dunno where that would stand as a defence, as anyone breaking into the router wouldn't be doing so with my permission, either implicit (open security) or explicit (give them the password).

What a load of shit. Are we going to implement tougher penalties for being foreign, and then say that pay-off will be a more relaxed police regime, then? Gah, screw this, lunchtime.

Mandy is wasting his time with all this shite, he's just proving himself to be utterly out of touch with the public once again. This legislature won't come into force for another 2 years, by which time I'm fairly certain that Spotify (or Google or Facebook) will have managed to build their free/pay streaming services to a point where 95% of the public who pirated before won't bother anymore as they are only interested in listening to popular songs available via these services. The musos who pirate obscure and underground music (including myself) will not have to worry about this legislature as this music won't be BPI affiliated so they have no control over any copyright infringements. Personally, I've already stopped pirating BPI affiliated music in favour of just bookmarking it on Spotify. Innovative business models were always going to be the solution for the music industry, not bullshit like this out-of-touch, waste-of-time legislative rubbish.

Spotify isn't going to work as a business model though Pupil. It doesn't make any money and can only exist because the labels cut it a subsidised pricing deal because they are shit-scared of iTunes.

I don't really see why not, the fact that it exists shows in some way it is succeeding. The consumer will slowly be moving away form physical format purchasing towards streaming services, whether that is film, tv or music. Now in Spotify you can cache an album onto your PC/iPhone/DAP (if you pay the 10 quid a month subscription) so you can listen to it "off-line", so why "purchase" the album via HMV or iTunes or wherever else? The industry will have to move away from making mass profits on music sales towards a more diverse business model. I agree Spotify (in its current incarnation) isn't the answer, but it is a step in the direction of the solution.

Easy answer here. If you're thinking about sharing files, try not sharing files.

Shiittt! I'm just going to have to travel around with some blank tapes everywhere, just in case a friend has something I'd like a copy of. That's a bit inconvenient.

Oh wait I've got a 160GB* memory stick in my pocket.

I like this. It's say if you are into music, you'll get your hands on it anyway you can, even by PAYING for it. Saying that the "Record Companies" are pointing the evil P2P finger and law against their most loyal customers... potentially making it worse as people flick them the V and downloading more.

EU offers hope to file-sharers

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8344174.stm

Quote:
Internet users throughout Europe accused of illegal file-sharing are to receive more protection from being cut off by their service provider.

The European Parliament and Council is due to make a decision on its Telecoms Reform Package in late November.

The package will entitle users in all 27 EU states to be put through a "fair and impartial procedure" before being disconnected.
