I read somewhere yesterday that they are marketing this specifically to the older generation. They are not expecting folks with DSi's to upgrade to the larger screen, but it's supposed to be easier to read text for those whose eyes are not as sharp as they used to be (due to staring at minute screens, I guess...

The DS needs moar pixels, not bigger pixels.

My DS resides dusty and in a drawer

When he says it is nonsense he means that someone has made the report up and that no new model is planned, not that it is unnecessary. Craig has a habit of declaring that reports that Nintendo are releasing new DS models as mere gossip, then seeing the adverts in the press pretty soon after.

I don't think that DS needs more pixels - I am perfectly happy with it. :)

That's what I meant too; I don't think a new revision of the existing DS with an even bigger screen is likely. Mind you, I'm not Nintendo, so what do I know?

My comment about MOAR PIEXLS meant that basically we need a whole new DS, not yet another revision of the existing one. Every time I go to play something on my DS I'm taken aback at just how low-res the screens are compared to, well, every other consumer device with an LCD screen I own, and the bigger screens on my shiny new DSi only highlights that problem further. Civ Revolution DS may be portable digital crack, but if it were available for my much-nicer-screened HTC Hero, the DS version wouldn't get a look in any more.

How about a super DS that takes all Game Boy games ever? Only I and a select band of hardened retro nerds will buy it, but I still want it.

It would certainly be nice to play all the old games on a nice bright screen. I never did get round to buying one of those SPs with the brighter screen that Stu enthused about.

Yup. Mrs Metal and I played linked-up Radar Mission the other night with my ancient original Game Boy (which has that annoying loss of columns on the screen) and my GBC. T'was excellent.

So was I. It'd be nice to play Revenge of the Gator on a decent screen.

If you want a replacement (probably got more GB Pockets than anything, but should have a few originals), just let me know and I'll pop one in the post to you.

If emulation isnt a problem for you then there are plenty of things (including the DS itself) which would let you do this ?

A DS and an R4 card with Gooba
A hacked PSP
A Dingoo A320 (runs a variant of Goomba and i've just played through Mario Land 1 + 2 and i'm about to settle down to go through the two late Zelda games which i've never played (Seasons and Oracle))

Speaking of which, do you know how to reach the exit on Level 3? I'm stumped.
