They pushed out an update for the XBLA version Outrun last month that didn't seem to get mentioned here. But I've realised what it did it fixed the leaderboards Making the main appeal to the re-release actually fucking work!

Now when you cycle through the leaderboard (annoyingly still via the menu) it lists your friends by score rather than alphabetically.

Thus I challenge you to a Outrun off

OUTRUN MODE - GOAL A
HEART MODE - GOAL A
TIME ATTACK MODE - GOAL A

GO GO GO GO!

Next Sunday we can switch to goal B and so on (if there is interest)

We should make sure Zio is aware of this even if he is a PS3 only pariah as I bet some of his scores / times will be better than mine.

Outrun 2 is the only game I've managed to get in the top 100 in the world on the leaderboards which basically points to a combination of me playing it too much and not enough people buying it. Stupid people.

Top 100? You certainly fill your trousers trousers.

PS3 players can play via the honour system

Though post pics for super impressive times because that would be fun.

On sunday I will transcribe my friends leaderboard as it stands. If your not on my friends list then sorry, please add me.

But Trousers has a very low number compared to me. Surely he's rubbish then?

Yeah, what do the numbers mean again?

Although being somewhere between Dimrill and Rodafowa can't be too shabby, either way. Right?

Not sure if this is serious or not , so the number is your 'world' ranking

So for Trousers there are only 91 people in the world who have a better score than him on that mode

(or for me there are 44727 better players :-)

I was just thinking "ooh, top ten, that's not bad" when I realised that the leaderboard was upside-down. :(

I've only played Outrun about a dozen times before this one. Anyone below me in that table (which is about half of you! ) should be ashamed of yourselves.

Also, I've ordered that wheel stand that Ramsea bought, so when it comes I'll be suddenly all about the wheel games. Hence, I'll be playing this.

I just tried playing Outrun 2 and man.. I'm as rusty as the cutlery on the titanic! I'm glad I put in a decent score previously!

I think I've only played Outrun mode to Goal A once on the 360 - it was very much a "damn I regret selling my Xbox because of losing Outrun" purchase.

I'm glad to hear they've fixed the leaderboards; them being stupid is probably the main reason I lost interest so quickly (see also: getting a job, Forza 2).

You mean you've got all the cheevos you can from it you filthy whore.

It's Outrun 2 - it's hardly a chore, unlike (picking a random example) making it to the end of Prototype or grinding through some rage inducing gnome carrying excercise*.

I can't get anywhere near the score I set when it first came out but trying to get near it has been nothing less than fun every step of the way.

I burned out on it last time trying to beat the entire thing in under 4:35. My best was 4:36 and I never came close to it again.

I'm not even sure how I got to where I am on that Goal A leaderboard as I'm consistently rubbish at it now. I should try manual gears one day too.

Oh, and I wished they'd fixed the menu speech in the update... SAY 'MAGICAL SOUND SHOWER'... SAY IT!

It's the only game I can play with gears, because if your doing it right you only have to deal with them at the very start of the game and then you never touch them again, apart from optionally using them to start drifts.

I've no idea how Trousers has done so well, and due to people playing well I'm slipping down the BEEX leaderboard, even though I've knocked 850 odd people off the global leaderboard (I'm now 5508th best in the world rather than 6349).

If I get under 5000 I'll be ecstatic.

/has jumped two places up the leaderboard woohoo :smug:

I assume the position is based on points rather than time, so are there any tips for how to maximise the score?

I'm starting to get used to playing it on the wheel rather than the joypad. It is better, although chicanes where you need to drift one way and then the other very quickly is easier to do on the joypad.

Had a quick go last night but it seems I've lost what little skill I had.

I will still chip away at this though as I forgot how fun this game was.

Rivals and buses.

You've got to slipstream them before overtaking to get double points (50k for a rival - 15k for a bus) so if you get all those you're already 200k ish up on a normal score just with a few of those. Also if you so much as scrape them you get half the normal points so you have to play it risky to get the double points but know when to get out of the way sharpish.

Then it's just about slipstreaming as often as possible and not drifting as much as you'd think. A lot of the corners your rivals drift on you can just get round with a tiny bit of throttle manipulation and no drifting which means you can slipstream easier and set yourself up for an overtake as a much smaller target than if you swing it round horizontally.

Heart Attack mode on goal A is nipping me up - I'm about 14 places off getting into the top 100 there but that final drifty cone bit at the very end keeps dragging my score down.

So, is slipstreaming the rival car itself what triggers the double points award? I thought it had something to do with slipstreaming but wasn't totally sure.

Aye, I know about the scoring double by slipstreaming past things, didn't realise the buses score that high though, or those other fine points, thanks Trousers!

Last night I pushed myself up to 5500th then 4300th. This morning I broke a million points and pushed myself up to 1250th best! Besting 5000 people since sunday. FUCK YEAH! I've never played Outrun as a score attack game before and it's fucking lush. Brought my love for the game right back to the surface.

That puts me third on the BEEX leaderboard. 8) (Nb. For comparison I'm second to last for Goal D).

I think I'll put some time into the heart attack leaderboard now.

Aye, same here. What an awesome idea this thread was.

The only fly in the ointment personally is my slightly fuzzy understanding of the scoring system - fast times don't necessarily equate to big points, so it's slightly difficult to work out what I need to be doing to improve my score.

Yep - and the score appears in the top right in green as 50k. It's in yellow as 25k if you pass it normally and red as 12.5k if you clip them.

You can use the rivals to slipstream the other cars as well - i.e. on the second part of goal A when you have the slight chicane after the bridge and then the big downhill bit - providing you've got there quick enough you can tuck in behind the rival and use his slipstream to double your points on everything on that downhill bit then take him just before the drifting left hander.

Listening to Trousers is your best bet. You get points for travelling, the faster you travel the faster they rack up (i think) but the main score comes from over taking people, especially rivals.

On the opening bit of the first stage I can now slip stream past all the cars until the climb at the end. When you do it in one long chain it's incredibly satisfying. Very Shmup'y to be honest.

Itching to play it more now.

Slipstreaming basically doubles your score and increases your speed so you should end up with a faster time anyway if you slipstream as much as possible. Just make sure you don't get too close so that you touch anyone as that will bugger your score up.

As your score goes up on the right hand side of the screen you want it to be in blue as much as possible which indicates points embigenningment.

Oh also the slipstreaming works around bends so if you see a car ahead on a bend just make sure you're in the same lane as them and you'll catch some extra points as soon as you get in range.

Good tips, thanks!

Trousers, maybe you could do us a run-through on A and tape it somehow, for teh site and for going "wow" and learnings.

edit: that said, there's probably already such things on youtube...

I can only manage 1.2m at the moment but will have a go with manual gears tonight to see if I can get better that way.

There's a video of some bloke getting 1.7m on youtube;

Yeah I always use the F40. I use the 360 for Heart Attack though.

Broke the million mark. Just. 2075th. So only the better part of 18000 places jumped in a week. :D

I'm still in Zombie Flu quarantine, so haven't been on the 'pooter much this week - which is why I've only just seen this. What follows are my existing scores as I'm not really up for grinding Outrun 2 at the moment!

Brilliantly, according to the PSN leaderboards, nobody - myself included - has ever submitted a Time Attack score in a non-Tuned car! Might have to do one later purely so I can be at the top of one of the leaderboards.

18000 places? Bloody hell! Good work.

I'm really curious about the cars too, they don't seem to handle identically but there isn't a huge difference. I've been sticking with the F50 I think myself.

Glad there is a bunch of us playing again. Yeay for BeeX!
