Don't you wish there were a motorcycle racing game where you could beat your opponents mercilessly while passing them at high speeds? There is, friends. It's called Road Rash -- and it's wonderful. Superannuation spotted a nearly three-year-old "pre-vis" version (read as: mock-up) of a current-gen Road Rash on YouTube (found after the break), which presumably never got past the drawing board at the long-closed EA Warrington studio.

We can't be sure if the tantalizing bit of video is of an actual working game or just a video depiction of what those involved hoped the game would one day look like, but we're not so sure that matters -- it's quite enticing either way. A recent trademark filing by the publisher certainly indicates something may be in the works for the once mighty motorcycle series. We've contacted EA for comment on the company's plans for the IP and will update this post if we hear more.

:'( WHY?! :'(

I KNOW! I saw this on Eurogamer the other day and it makes me want to HULK SMAHS things.

I demand:

A current gen Road Rash game, with a big interconnected map like in Road Rash 3D. And the ability to free roam around it causing trouble, or to take part in organised events a la Burny Pee/Test Drive Unlimited.

Hell, you could mod it into Burny Pee were it not for the low age rating. Certainly their bike physics are perfectly suited for it! AND they're part of EA.

I remember repeatedly forking over a HUGE WODGE of cash (okay, $20, a lot to me as I was only 14) to rent a 3D0 to play the marvellous version therein (this was before it came to the PSX and Saturn). Everything about it was amazing. The tracks were detailed and exciting, the frontend had the really great distorted characters and soundtrack, and the hilarious video interludes of people falling over and bikers riding past and rubbing them on the head.

Jailbreak was arse (it missed the whole point) but the 3D0 and 3D versions were among the best bike games ever.

I only played it on the Megadrive, but it always seemed really slow and dull.

It didn't work as a fighting game, because the moves you could do were so limited. It didn't work as a racing game because all you had to do was keep your 'foot' down and not fall off (by, importantly, not fighting), and because of the worse elastic-banding I've had the misfortune to come across. Graphically it was okay (although it moved a bit slowly, and everyone leaned over far too much), and it was at least original.
But I couldn't ever describe it as 'good'.

Road Rash was fun, but it could have been a lot better, to be honest. The concept is ripe for a good rerun. Just as long as it's not too chavved up. Which it probably will be.

The elastic banding was awful, aye. I remember the last bunch of races - you'd power past everyone and then spend ten solid minutes flat out with the three leaders specks in the distance. If you hit anything or decelerated for any moment throughout the last five minutes, you'd never catch up. And there wasn't much fighting so much as launching yourself fist-first at the slower ones at the start for a laugh, invariably wiping them out immediately.

The 16-bit ones were pretty good (though the Sega CD version that mashed the videos and music of the 3D0 version with the graphics of Road Rash 2 was a bit jarring) but it really hit its stride with the 32-bit ones.

That said, the concept video does look good fun.

Nearest thing to a modern Road Rash was the excellent Speed Kings -

Any excuse to link to one of my own videos. Shame I did so hopelessly while I was recording it though. On the Cube it was four-player splitscreen too.

I'd want it a lot. Providing it's not ass like all of the ones made post 3D on the 3DO.

EDIT : They already have most of what they need in Burnout.

Must have!

Additionally, anyone who doesn't like Road Rash is both wrong and a fool*.

*Unless they are talking about Road Rash 3D, that was crap to the max.
