Be Excellent To Each Other

Just got back from watching Up in the cinema with some housemates. It is brilliant. It's funny, clever and features a much better story structure than the last bunch of formulaic pixar/dreamworks ones. And it's achingly sad in parts, but with substance, not meaningless, fleeting "oh boo hoo, he's upset (but will get over it in five minutes when all fixes itself)" stuff. Even the 3D stuff didn't give me a headache or make my eyes hurt.

Go see it. It is terrific fun.

Saw this tonight, as I was determined to see it with my wife because I knew of a couple of the themes in it. And damned if I didn't have something in my eye at certain times, as it brought back certain feelings.

Very funny in places, some breathtaking shots, quite serious and deep, certainly not for kids although of course there are moments they will enjoy.

Is it Pixars best? I don't know, but only because they are so damned good, you keep thinking the next one will be the one that fails, but Up most certainly is among their best and if you have ever, ever loved someone, you should go and see it.

I'm going on Wednesday as I hate paying for both me AND the missus...

Seriously though, I've been looking forward to this since I saw the first trailer. I love Pixar films.. but I didn't at first. I was sad thinking that we'd never see the classic hand drawn Disney animations ever again... but I soon got over it.

The next Pixar film is hand drawn. The Frog and the Princess, or something like that.

I am going on Tuesday to see this. I want a good cry!

It'll have to be very good to beat Wall-E. I heart Wall-E in a big way.

I saw this on Saturday, we took Jens little sister who is only seven. She loved it as much as we did I think! It really is excellent and it's obvious from the very start how much love and attention Pixar put into their films. An instant classic.

Although, annoyingly, my Wall-E blu ray won't play with my legally purchased copy of WinDVD 9. Fifty fucking quid to be told that my 'region is incorrect'. It's fucking not.

Anyway... Up. I plan on watching it this week. The trailers have amused me.

I love Pixar films more than chocolate, and they've never put a foot wrong for me. I don't really have time to go to the cinema these days though, but will be picking up the R1 DVD which comes out next month.

Is Up better than Wall-E? If I really, really, really had to choose, I would go with Wall-E, because that opening half hour is so utterly, utterly wonderful.

But Up packs an incredible emotional punch at times



and is certainly their most emotional and interestingly bizarre film.

And the short beforehand "Partly Cloudy" really puts you in the mood for it.

I found Wall-E really quite dull to be honest. He was cute and all, but after a few minutes I just kind of lost interest.

I wish Pixar would do more shorts... the one on Wall-E made me cry with laughter...

'For the Birds' got me like that. *loved* 'Geri's Game' also.

Up is one of the greatest films ever and that's it. Incredible.

The shorts are fantastic. I think For the Birds and Boundin' are my bestest. I think Boundin', in particular, is hugely uplifting and of course utterly gorgeous to look at.

Yay, saw this last night, and despite looking like Roy Orbison in my massive 3D glasses loved it.

I think I'm going to see this tonight. Though I'll likely go for the 2D version given how much of a headache Coraline 3D gave me — I had to take the glasses off shortly through that film, watching the rest in blur-o-vision instead.

At the rate of praise it's been seemingly getting, how long till the demands it be up for an Oscar erupt?

See the 2D version. Ignore the 3D. I saw it in 2D and can't imagine how a 3D version would make any difference. It's probably better in 2D actually as the colours will be more vivid. And you don't have to wear uncomfortable glasses.

The 3D version adds massive depth to most views across the canyons and

Saw this last night. Certainly to my mind Pixar's best first half of a film, I really was transported! The first half hour can literally stand shoulder to shoulder with the early Disney true classics of Pinnochio and Bambi, and to my mind it supercedes them. So yes, the first half I reckon to be Pixar's best work yet, which makes it weirdly frustrating when the second half comes up as merely very, very, very good. If all of Up were like the second half, I would have really enjoyed it, but because the first half was, frankly, a work of storytelling genius there is a slight bittersweet tang to two of the most wonderful hours I've spent in the cinema.

Those images that linger were incredible too. Pixar really know how to not only frame and light a shot, but they inject a quiet atmosphere that many 'serious' film-makers completely miss. Here's a few examples:



I loved it, anyway. Inventive plot, perfectly balanced script and some of the best slapstick I've seen. I could have done without yet despite my slightest of tch's at the last third, I reckon this to be at least on a par with Ratatouille, if not the best Pixar film yet. And possibly the film of the year too.

Anybody who walks away from Up having not being moved deserves pitying, frankly.

And yes, I cried.

Watched this with the wife, my brother and his wife (they got married 4 weeks ago).

Oh my word, I've never cried so much in my life.

The moment at the start when they're looking at the clouds, and then you see the hospital? Blarted.
When Carl is about the give his wife the long awaited tickets... and something happens? Blarted.
When the kid says 'Cross your heart'? Yep, you guessed it... Blarted.

And numerous other moments. Dammit, I now heart this as much as Wall-E.

Bastard Pixar, making me enjoy Disney movies. Bastards!

Ah, I was wondering at which points you big girls were crying. If I was going to cry in a film, it'd have to be towards the end when I've attached myself to the characters a bit more, but Up just got happier towards the end.

I wasn't too impressed with the film overall. It was good, but I didn't think it was brilliant. If I'm honest, I preferred the 'Partly Cloudy' short film at the start.

I haven't seen it, but it sounds rubbish.

Watched this on Saturday. Basically I'll just agree with all the praising comments in this thread. This was a wonderful, charming, lovely, perfect film.

And yes, of course I cried. Lots.
