What if it's your fault that Firefly* didn't get recommissioned, because you didn't buy the DVD? Eh? EH?
In all seriousness, I don't get this attitude at all. You don't have the right to pirate things just because you buy other things, much as I don't have the right to steal crisps from Subway just because I lunch their every day.

I personally think Myps should get some sort of badge for this.

Oh, I don't think I have a right to do it, not at all. And your Firefly example is absolutely spot on - buying DVDs from one company and pirating from another is undoubtedly fucking over the other, but, y'know. I can't afford everything!

With Spotify, iPlayer, 4oD, Goozex and XBLA I don't really have a need to pirate stuff.

Unless it is old and unobtainable. Like MAME and the like. But then I always take great pains to buy any (normally) shitty port they make of anything that I like.

The Xbox having demos for almost all games has killed any real desire to pirate, because the idea of dropping all that money without having a good idea if the game is ok is unthinkable these days. You'll know whether you like it, so you don't have to risk any dosh.

It's the main reason I don't buy many Wii games. Especially WiiWare stuff.

The more games you have the less you will play properly or at all.

Also, you appreciate them a lot less when you're not paying for them and you have them all.

I learned that lesson last year when my hard drive went bang.

I wouldn't say that's necessarily the case. I enjoyed and appreciated Hitman 2 absolutely loads for well over a year, pretty much every week, before I could afford to buy it. But then I think it depends on the overall volume, compared to the volume of games you have altogether.

I think it's quite telling that as easy as it is I still can't be sumon the enthusiasm to even bother to do that.

Oh, and Mimi's homebrew cart is used for actual homebrew! Maybe the first card in existence to do so. I was thinking of doing a round up for U2J if I get a moment (and thats ok).

Mainly because POWDER is one of the best games I've played all year. Seriously. And Mr D's Blast Arena Advance. And Vultron and BulletGBA. THEY ARE AMAZING.

I softmodded mine (was very easy) and downloaded a few games to try.

I played madworld for about an hour, and boom blox for maybe the same. Ages ago. And haven't been bothered to go back to them. Haven't bothered with anything since.

Well when I was in my "download every single new game evarrrr" stages in and around 2003-2005 I didn't really play any game. Download it, install it, take a quick look and go "yeah, s'alright" and then move onto the next one.

My personal morality around all this is confused at best. Generally I don't tend to pirate stuff because if it's something I like, I feel I should reward the creator of it with my monies. Unless it's retro games or PSP and DS games. For some reason, I simply cannot make myself purchase a game for either console - if I do I feel bad that I've needlessly wasted money on something I could've downloaded for free. Even when it's something I feel deserves success, like Pirates! (oh, teh ironing) on the PSP or Retro Game Challenge and Chinatown Wars on the DS, I still feel obliged to pirate the fuck out of them.

As for not valuing stuff I haven't paid for, I don't think that's strictly true in my case as there are some games I've never paid a penny for that I end up playing a lot. PSP Pirates! being one of them, for instance. Professor Layton on my DS got a fair bit of use on my recent holiday. The problem is volume, sometimes if I've downloaded a lot of stuff I'll end up playing none of it.

Occasionally, if I've seen a movie at the cinema that I know for a fact I'll end up buying on DVD, I'll download it in the meantime to tide me over. Also, I have on the odd occasion downloaded music 'to try it out' - but if I really like it I will buy it. This very weekend I shall be making a purchase of Elbow's 'Seldom Seen Kid' album after downloading it a couple of weeks ago and loving it. This very day I shall be 'trialling' Mumford & Sons album on my commute home.

Legally and morally I don't care if I or other people pirate things. My point was that I want to start appreciating them again, and the only way I really do that is if I buy or get bought things. Perhaps I'd be the same if I could afford to buy lots and lots of things, but I can't, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. ;)

I can see that happening to anyone, but the same would happen if you bought a tonne of games as well. The only difference is you're less likely to buy games in such bulk.

I have played the 2nd on PC and fourth (Blood Money) on Xbox 360. Both are fucking great. Blood Money is better overall, but lost points to Hitman 2 for taking away several options and rendering many of the guns completely useless for anything but rampaging. They are terrific games and let you have all kinds of fun pretty much any way you like. I played the German embassy level of Hitman 2 about 200 times just to see how many ways it could be done before even moving on to the next level.

I downloaded a lot of music in 2004-6. Again (pattern forming!), I didn't get as into it as I should have been. 5-10 new albums a day = sucks. Then i got a record player. Sounded a lot better, and a tad harder to get off slsk. Now I'm getting more promo CDs than I can shake a stick at, so downloading (or radio, Spotify etc) is pointless. That, and my awesome stereo which chews up and spits out mp3 files, while gently caressing lossless files and records. I know you can download lossless files but, again, too much stuff as it is.

I don't like when PR companies insist you review off a stream or set of mp3s though. Cheapens the whole thing. How about Alan Whicker writes an article on Barcelona, with nothing to go on but a postcard of Las Ramblas? The Lightning Bolt review in OMM this past Sunday? Based on an internet stream. Reviews of the Converge album on US sites? mp3

As for films, I either go to the cinema or stick them on my Lovefilm list.

As a result of this thread and the recommendations therein, I shall henceforth be pirating moar warez. Thanks, myp!

The for/against piracy debate is about as useful as the for/against bumsex debate. Those who will, will and those who won't, wont. And very occasionally we'll see a story on the news about someone who got caught and there will be almost unilateral dismay at the disproportionate treatment of the individual(s) concerned.

Only if you've been pirating porn featuring Mr. Chris getting a savage bumming from Mrs. Chris with her huge collection of strap-ons.

Apparently.

"Set phasers to sand"

Eh?

[edit]Oh, just deserts. That's how it's spelt. So, you know, joke fail ;)

Fuck me I totally did not know that. /kneels before Grim...

Is it me or do I always hear it pronounced "dessert" though rather than "desert" when used in that phrase?

Edit
Quote:
So, when hearing the phrase with the pronunciation like 'desserts', people think it must be spelled that way too. The spelling might be more intuitive if we thought of the phrase as 'what you justly deserve'.

Note to self - Read more than the first few lines. Thicky McTrousers.
