Is it ok to deliberatly put steps in a path just to piss off wheel chair users?

I imagine it's actually harder to make steps than to just gradually slope.

If you're ever doing anything just to piss someone off, it's pretty much not going to be 'OK'.

I am sure it is against the DDA as well...

No, if it is somewhere the public are intended to visit, then there is an act that came in to force a couple of years ago that means that they must have access that is suitable for disabled people.

So if that is the only access point then they are breaking the law.

(Making me look) Stupid question, but how do they make a path that slopes? Does the tarmac/concrete/whatever set before gravity pulls it down to the bottom? Is it moulded just before it is fully set?


I imagine it being harder to do a slope than steps. Steps are just blocks stack up. A slope, in my head, involves pouring a material into a shape against gravity

Please note my knowledge of building stuff is limited to watching Grand Designs.

Tarmac is pretty gloopy and won't "run".
Concrete is tricky to lay on a steep slope, so it's done in small sections at a time normally.

You generally slope what is under the concrete (using bricks, rocks, whatever), then depending on the application you can either block off the concrete in sections to make shallow 'steps' before adding a firmer mix over the top, or just use the firm mix straight on the underlay if it'll never bear heavy loads.

I think that would be a very poor idea.

It's someones house, once a month a bunch of middle aged women visit the wife, one of whom is in a wheel chair. The Man of the house does not like this woman so he decided to make his path have this step in the middle.

By all accounts the disabled lady is horrible person with racist views. The only other way to get to their house, would be through a flower bed.

Wouldn't it be easier to just tip her out of the chair? That way they won't bother anyone else, either, and she probably won't come back.

Edit: Or invite a load of enormous black and indian men (or polish, or chinese, or whatev) round and have them flirt with her.

However, the DDA is far to biased toward disabled people.
The small middle school (I know) I went to has about 500 students. When I was there, there was one girl in a wheelchair. They worked it so all her classes were on the ground floor, and put ramps onto all the steps she would need to go over regularly. When she needed to go somewhere with steps, a classmate would help her. All was fine and good, using nothing but common sense.

Flash-forward to four years ago, when the school fucking crippled itself financially because it was forced to put a lift in to allow disabled access to the two upper floors, which were only served by large staircases. There wasn't even a disabled child at the school.

Fucking insane.

It's some tupperware meeting (or possibly anne summers, but I don't think so) that his wife runs, they take it in turns in which house to host it.

Not really too much trouble, and if it's only a few steps is it really worth putting in a ramp for just one person? Can't they just get one of those ramps they use to get the trolly onto trains?

It seems rather petty (as the woman will still probably negotiate the steps and come to the party, so this is only there to annoy her) but hey, I've done petty things. His house, his choice.
