I came to the conclusion last week that I just can't be arsed with pirating stuff any longer. I used to download swathes and swathes of TV shows, films, games and music, but only ever get around to using about 5% of it all. My DS has sat on the shelf ever since I bought my R4 card for it, despite being used all the time when I actually owned proper games for it.

On the other hand, my Xbox 360 and the CDs/DVDs I own have been used extensively. End of an Era brought this up in the Dreamcast thread, but it's true: the stuff you buy yourself you respect more, and want to listen to/watch/play. I decided to take the plunge and download an album from iTunes last week. I've now listened to it about four or five times. I'm quite happy to wager that if I'd torrented it, it's quite likely I wouldn't have even listened to it yet, or perhaps a half-hearted listen to the first few tracks.

So, that's me done. I'm not saying I won't download the odd thing here and there to see if I like it, because there's no real alternatives for trialling stuff out and finding out music that's been recommended to you, but my days of torrenting all and sundry for the sake of downloading it are finished. There's no moral high ground to be had here by me, I've just come to the conclusions I don't appreciate any of my things if I haven't paid for them (or have been given as a present).

I can agree with this!

I (legally obtained - Ed) a pack of every single SNES game with a view to sorting them into alphabetical folders and removing all the foreign stuff. I got to "R" before I realised that I wasn't actually playing any of them, merely sorting them. That was my OCD kicking in right there!

It's true, I appreciate the things I've paid money for even more and would therefore, spend much more time with them.. even the rubbish games like Mortal Kombat Vs DC!

I gave up large scale pirating as soon as I began earning enough to have a disposable income.

Games: My xbox1 was chipped, but that was mainly so I slap a new bios on their and use emulators. I remember I downloaded Trashland for it, made sure it worked, and never played it again. But I *bought* Burnout 3 and played that to death. My brother in law offered to chip my 360 as soon as it's out of warranty, but I don't think I'll bother. PC games? They're cheap as chips compared to consoles (GTA4 was a tenner) and there's almost always a freeware alternative

Movies: I do download movies, but if I enjoy them, I *will* buy them. Even a 1080p MKV can't compare to a shiny silver disc!

Music: I'm a bit meh about music anyway. I'll download stuff if people ask me for it. Otherwise, radio.

TV: Ah, here's where my argument falls down. I torrent US TV shows all the time. Why? CBA waiting for them to come on UK TV, can watch them in HD for nowt, no adverts, can watch whenever we want. I object to buying TV shows on DVD, unless I'm deeply in love with said show (Red Dwarf mainly) and own very few box sets.

I know what you mean and have never really pirated movies and music, but also agree with DavPaz about still being happy to download TV shows. I mean, they're on TV anyway.. If it's a really good one I'll buy the box set for further seasons (and usually regret doing so since you get a crippled, inferior copy).

Yeah. On reflection, I'll probably continue to do this for new series. In my mind it's the same as checking out a new band.

This is the only stuff I pirate in any great volume, and as a Sky subscriber with a fairly big channel pack I'm going to get those TV shows eventually anyway. It's just impatience.

Indeed. I've never been a massive pirate (I know people who download a lot more), I just feel it's a complete waste of my time/bandwidth when I'm never going to use it. Legally I don't care, so it's not about that. It's about appreciating stuff more, I think. I've become blasé about possessions, and while I know I'll never get that excitement from when you were a child and you got presents/saved up your pocket money for things, I want to at least try to get some of the way back there.

There isn't one, because it doesn't exist (unless you mean plain old theft of the copyright). There's no limitation on copyright infringement either.

We've given up downloading TV now, and that was pretty much it (though I do need to go and buy Scribblenauts).

70 years after the creator's death, or publication if that comes later (and within the "70 years after death" period). It'd probably come under regular copyright restrictions if it's a comic though, as they would likely have signed ownership over to one entity, which will give them the 70 years after publication thing instead.

I think so, anyway. I mainly work on photographs, and drawings that are so old it doesn't matter.

uTorrent does that. So does Automatic/Transmission, I think.

Yes. On your Mac, Transmission is your best choice - I run it on my NAS, in fact. The WebGUI used to be an add-on (excellently called Clutch) but I think it's part of the core package now.

I pay for usenet so I can quickly grab the latest tv shows and stuff. Occasionally I get a movie but considering how much I spend on going to the cinema I think I'm allowed a few freebies.

Ironically, I think the last time I pirated anything was whilst I was working as a games developer. We'd regularly "share" games around the office to play at lunchtime and that. Since getting a job that paid a humane salary, I've pretty much just bought everything I wanted, much to MrsP's massive annoyance. Apparently, owning a house is more important than having stuff to fill it with.

I pirate and purchase in equal measure. A quick glance at my games/DVDs/CDs is enough proof that I've pumped more money into those industries than probably 90% of people, so I don't feel bad at all about downloading The Wire or whatever. In fact, I feel pretty good about it.
