It's an Elonex and came with a small TFT.

Windows XP required a login code, but using my 1337 H@><><0R skillz I was able to get into it.

It's a P4 2.66Ghz CPU with 504Meg of ram. It's also got a wireless card in.

Expect muchos "HAYULP!" soonest.

Question: Do I transplant bits from once computer to the other, such as GFX card, and things?

It looks about the same size. Also, AGP slots are smaller than PCI slots, aren't they?

I might be wrong but don't you get different sized AGP slots?

If you can't see a label but the memory fits you could always just try it. AFAIK the worst that'll happen is it won't boot properly, if it doesn't you can just haul it back out again & it should boot fine. That said, you might want to hang on till someone less kamikaze than me confirms this :DD

Yes and they're usually a nasty poo brown as opposed to blue or red or yellow.

IIRC they don't have a retention mech on the back end either.

Can you run both systems? If so download a programme called CPUID* onto both systems. This will tell you all sorts of stuff, but the bit we are looking for is in memory -> General -> Type. What does that say?

Edit, might be called CPU-Z. Hold on, I will upload it.

What I've done so far is:

Remove gfx card from old box and stick it new box, along with wireless card and USB card.

Booted up first time and on the third reboot, the wireless works. I might stick my 512meg memory into it later, but I've stuck all the screws abck in now.

now downloading firefox.

Thanks for the help.

Hurrah. It's also a damn sight quieter than my old one.

Excellent value for money.

Nah, that wouldn't work - it has a list of things to allow, rather than a list of things not to.

DDR Ram is backwards compatible (with in reason) So you should be able to put the other memory into the system with not too much issue. Worse case, I think, is that it doesn't boot properly, as Wullie said. You may end up with a slight incompatibility in the two meaning they don't run as fast as they could, but I doubt you will notice. Ideally, if you could perform that scan on the other system as well, that would tell us what we are dealing with.

Well that Elonex is running the slowest of the DDR ram types so anything should work unless the timings are completely out.

The higher end 400mhz stuff can step down to any speed.

As I say, timings. If one ram has crazy low latencies and the other one doesnt you may have a problem.

I'll stick the 512 meg thingy in tomorrow, maybe.

Also, how easy is it going to be to get things from my old HDD to the new? Can I just plug it in?

2 things.

1) depends if they are both sata or both ide or not

2) Depends what you mean by things? videos, documents, files and stuff? yes. Programs, games, office and so on? you would need to reinstall them.

I would strongly imagine it's UATA 133 so IDE. SATA back then was incredibly expensive and not as well known, and given it's an Elonex then it's likely UATA at best so IDE. IIRC SATA became more common place around the time of the Pentium D era. I could be wrong though !

It's an IDE. What I'd most like to do is transfer data (music, pictures) from it to the new one, then wipe it. It already has wondows on it, though...

Put it in a USB external enclosure.

2p where would you get one for that..

You can get a caddy for less than £10...

After what you did to your bios, you are on shaky ground for advice :)

Why not just shove it in the PC? If it is IDE, you just set them up on the same cable and use the second one as a slave. Then you have two HDDs. Why would you spend anything in this case?

Pathetic post #784905789057890234 goes too.... Kovacs (crowd erupts).

I recently brought a network cable for 1p BIN on ebay with 98p shipping. So less than a pound delivered. Was for connecting my xbox to my pc for samba.

Less than a pound is a bit cheaper than like, £50+ for an external hdd.

Where did you get £50 for an evetranl HDD?

1. Buy caddy
2. Insert Internal HDD
3. Contect to PC
4. profit.......

Less than £10..

I would not buy 2nd hand cables as you don't know if they still work properly..

2nd hand? they were brand new. Network cables are cheap as chips. It did arrive second class, though.

I thought Mal said that one of his hard drives was buggered.. So I thought he would need to buy an entire external hard drive unit, cost around £50.

For a tenner mind he could buy a cheap memory stick thinger and use that, so there are plenty of options.

Anyway, how the Hell is a network cable going to help him when he's using the GFX card from the old PC in the new one?
A USB enclosure is the way forward, plus you get a free USB HDD when you're done.

JC I think you are taking what people say too seriously, when people poke fun at you for liking Alienware or flashing your bios then it seriously is gentle affectionate teasing. See also myp getting teased about fixing laptops, Mimi getting teased about getting drunk easily, Gaywood getting teased about being a huge nerd(although he seems to love it). Please don't get wound up at it, it seriously is just people joking with you and it's not meant to be at you. it only seems to be when you react angrily (which seems unreasonable) that people start trying to wind you up properly.

Yeah I know. Being mentally ill has it's downsides. I take everything way too seriously and personally and usually miss jokes and go off on one.

Well in fairness and honestly Gill I don't notice that stuff because I'm not like, a hardcore 100% of the time member here. I really like the people here and I love the intellect and I like the odd ding dong but I don't tend to read everything posted here.

As I say, I do over react and take things the wrong way (sometimes) which I am aware of. TBH that was the first thing I sort of realised that ended up with me going to see a psychiatrist. It's not really an anger thing however, more of me just missing the point (usually humour) and going into a rant (but still laughing and smiling).

It's actually quite odd that I have stuck around here tbh. I don't do crowds very well at all and usually find it all too much to take in.

You're more than welcome to come around to MaliTowers and make PC Data things happen anytime you want. I can supply copious amounts of tea and a tour of a garage most 30 year olds dream of.

So, to recap, I can just plug my 200gig HDD with XP on and it'll boot up fine into this XP and then I can waste teh old XP and everything is good?
