Ow, sore jaw.
Last night it was a friend of mine's birthday, not a good friend, just a guy I went to school with. Bumped into him the other day and he invited me to the pub for his birthday. I'd met a few people there before, but they all left early on. By the time it was closing time, it was me, my mate Ste, 3 girls and 3 guys who I didn't really know. The 3 guys live together miles off, so got a taxi home, Ste was going the same way as me, but was trying to get it on with one of the girls, so they were walking together.
I agreed to walk the other two (slightly drunk, but not very) girls home, since they live just around the corner from me it turned out.
On the way out of the pub, one of the two girls saw a guy spit on the floor and said "don't spit, it is disgusting" I could see he was ready to get lairy, so said "come on, it's not a big deal, it's not like he is inside" and he said to her "you wanna shut your mouth" and she didn't back down. Eventually he told me to get her home, and as I made her and her mate walk off, the guy and his mate were shouting "fuck off you slags" and other such niceties.
Then as we walked off, one of them looked back and saw Ste and the other girl (who had gone to sort out the taxi) and the the spitting guy (who was only little) and his 3 very big mates. Then across the road was one of the girls (amicable (olol joke about Barrat)) ex and his mate, so we went and waited for Ste and other girl with them.
When we were all together (me, 3 lads and 3 girls) the spitting guy, 3 very big lads, and spitting girls girlfriend walked past, and did and said nothing.
Then when they got about 50 yards away, turned around, came back to us, and started shouting obcenities and the girls again, which we all ignored. Then one of the big guys punched one of the girls in the face.
This was when I stepped in. I tried to pull the two girls away, but they were more interested in shouting at the guys. Then the spitting guy came up to me and said "you aren't doing a good job of defending your girlfriend." I told him I had just met them that night. He said "how come you are not fighting back? Look at the size of you compared to me." I just said, calmly, that I didn't want to fight, and that there was no need to. He then took a swing for me, and hit me pretty hard in the jaw. Then him and his mates walked off. He obviously wanted an xcuse for him and his mates to jump on me.

Interesting points:
One of the big guys accidentally punched spitting guys gf, saying "sorry, I was just throwing punches, I wasn't thinking"
The three guys who actually knew these girls did bugger all.
I was scared shitless, but managed to just about keep my cool.
Someone phoned the police, and they said they were on there way. Nver turned up.

Fucking hell. Completely pointless situation and now you're bruised and sore and upset.

I know how you feel, man, sorry to hear about it.

Don't rely on the police. I have had to ring 999 twice in the last fortnight and am still waiting for the police to show up.

Hope the both of you that got punched are not badly hurt, and that karma rebalances things for the oafs involved.

sorry to raise a dumb point... but your lady friend should not have had a go at the chap for spitting.. yes it is not nice to spit, but there would be a 99% chance he was drunk and a knob, and it would not end well.

But she was drunk as well. Trying to tell people who are drunk what they should and shouldn't do is as productive as showing card tricks to a fucking dog.

This is why I wish they would close down pubs.

My mother has one literally right in front of her house. When I stay there I have to listen to all the people leaving. Most of the time it's OK, but sometimes you get a mouthy cunt outside who doesn't want to go home. Then you hear the sound of glass breaking, ruckus and noise etc.

The problem is there's always one wanker who can't handle their drink and wants to cause shit. Personally I feel if people drank at home they could smash their own house up til their heart's delight.

Sorry to hear about that Lewie. This is basically why I tend to avoid pubs. Always one shit head who wants to cause bother.

JC piss off with closing pubs down!!

I enjoy a pint in a pub as it normally tatses better than in cans and bottles..

it might seem a daft question, if you have a problem with pubs, why buy a house next to one?

I did (buy a house across from a pub). There's been trouble ONCE in three years, and it wasn't even proper trouble, just some people outside loitering and making noise before going home.

Pity the pub itself is a bit pants.

I wouldn't worry too much JC, that pub outside your Mam's will probably close soon. Apparently the UK is losing 52 pubs a week.

Do they play loud thumping music? Or are they the more 'ooh, get us, we're cool' kind that sells overpriced and obscure brands of beer, and has Japanese cracker thingies instead of pork scratchings, and lots of 'hilarious' quotations on the walls, and a 'gastro' menu of burnt, overpriced food covered in rocket?*

*any similarity between this and my parents' local is entire intentional

There's a pub round the corner from my house and it looks pretty nice.. It's full of the usual Chavs with caps and all that but I've never had any trouble from them.

The thing with situations like this is that's it's a small percentage of people who want to spoil it for everyone else. I say.. hold them underwater for 60 seconds. That'll sort them out!

We went out to a local pub the other week. I bought a 'round' for me and charlotte. A couple of gin and tonics cost £13. Thirteen fucking quid. Good riddance to the rip-off merchants, frankly.

£3 1664 in my local.

Pub in the village is £3 for pint bitter.

In Oxford, £3 seems about right for a beer, if it's £2.80 I'm pleased.

It's worth mentioning that in its previous incarnation, the aforementioned pub near my parents was a very rough place.

Bored one night I went in, ordered a pint and sat down in the corner. Disagreements started, someone looked at someone else's bird and the next thing I knew a pint glass came flying and smashed against the wall next to my head. A few minutes passed and then someone punched someone sitting on a barstool in the face. They went flying backwards and crashed onto the ground at my feet. The barman told them to fuck off and called the police. Things degenerated quickly and the two antagonists were wrestling on the floor and went rolling out the door into the parking lot as police cars came screaming up the hill.

It was something out of a comedy - the guy (in this case, me) sitting there unfazed and sipping his beer as chairs are smashed over heads and people thrown through windows.

Yes, I agree the girl was stupid to just give a random guy hassle outside a pub at closing time. I don't think it was her fault though, it was the thugs that just wanted to punch random women's fault. If I spat, and someone told me not to because they found it disgusting, I would just stop doing it, and appologise or something.

And yeah, I knew the police were not going to turn up, but why the fuck do they have to say "we are on our way right now" when they have no intention of turning up. Why can't they just say "that doesn't sound like the type of thing we are going to send someone out for, phone us back if it gets worse. You are on your own for now". As I said, it wasn't me that phoned them, I wouldn't have done.

If they are going to take my tax money, they can at least not lie to me.

Aside from the spitting though, you'd like to think that regardless of drunkenness levels, a bloke still wouldn't punch a woman in the face (er, or anywhere else for that matter).

Possibly, I didn't really know how to word it. "I got punched" seemed like it wasn't enough.

It really bugged me as well, because had it just been the one guy on his own, I know I could probably have very easilly restrained him, but I knew as soon as I laid a finger on him, his three masive mates would jump on me, and I am pretty sure that was the reaction he was attempting to provoke.

I don't really do violence all that much, not real life actual violence anyway. I punched a bouncer once (he totally deserved it), and have been in a few scraps when I was younger (all helping out a mate who probably sort of deserved it).

I was upset when a button did pop into my view asking me to press X to not get punched :(

Edit: Also, regardless of where you stand on the "it is worse for a bloke to hit a woman than a bloke to hit a bloke" issue, a massive guy should definately not hit a woman that is much smaller than him and has no chance of defending herself, and when it is basically unprovoked.

Why did she have no chance of defending herself?
The first thing I was taught at "fight club" (also known as karate) was that you don't debate your opponents appearance. They paired me off against a rather small (cute) chick and she kicked the shit out of me.

Aside from the spitting though, you'd like to think that regardless of drunkenness levels, a bloke still wouldn't punch a woman in the face (er, or anywhere else for that matter).

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
He shouldn't punch anybody.

Thank you. I hate that patronising 'oh, not a woman' crap. Being a cunt is being a cunt, it doesn't matter who you're doing it to.

Because most people don't go to fight club.

And hey, you aren't supposed to talk about it.

Possibly, I didn't really know how to word it. "I got punched" seemed like it wasn't enough.

My 'I got punched' anecdote didn't even involve any alcohol. I was just waiting for a lift home from work when a couple of lads came up to me and it seemed they were just looking for a fight purely for entertainment. I got a smack in the mouth and as I was trying to walk away from them, my lift arrived and they scarpered. I do wonder what it would take to rile me up though as I just don't seem to get angry at anything.

Mine is old, but involves being cornered on a bus by half about six to nine (there were hangers on - it was unclear who was actually going to jump in) unknown tossers who started giving my friend some shit for no reason. Rather stupidly, I told one of them to fuck off to deflect attention from him, despite being half his size and about 3% as effective in a fight. He later held three of them off with one arm, but it just pissed me off, he's a ridiculously good person and they were just being dicks to him for absolutely no reason.

That's a misunderstanding - the first rule of fight club is actually "no sportswear".

I've punched someone out of anger twice I can think of ever, and been close like 3 other times.

Once was a bully who was bullying me at school, and I had had enough of it.

The other was the afformentions time when I punched a bouncer, and he totally deserved it. I got away unscathed too!

I think the danger at the back of everyone's mind is I don't mind a fair 1 on 1 fight but what if someone pulls a knife?
I've had this happened to me once & I just backed off and thought 'it's not worth it'
