Quote:
The next Xbox 360 dashboard update will arrive next month.

The October issue of Sky Magazine states that the Sky Player will be available to download on the console. A web address linked from the publication contains the month of release in the URL.

The service will be accessible for Xbox Live Gold members, but only Sky subscribers with the relevant movie and sports packages will be able to access premium content.

As well as live television, it will share features with the PC version of the player, allowing the availability of movies and on-demand content.

The update will also be expected to include social networking functionality, including Facebook and Twitter.

I would only ever want sky for the occasional football match - can I not pay for it with Microsoft Pounds, I wonder - because they're missing a trick if so.

Since I've had it, I couldn't consider not having it. I'm very happy with the programming and the SKY+ box is awesomeness. its got the best EPG ever. I will try and find some forrin channels soon, to improve my language skills.

I prefer to watch the football at the pub, though.

You can't have used many STBs then. Several Freeview boxes I've used better it, Vista Media Center blows it into the dust, blimey, even MythTV for Linux is better, and that's a bag of bolts.

Don't be silly, they would lose subscribers.

I'm confused then, sky player, which does not pay some sky stuff. And if you want the stuff that anyone would ever get sky for, you need to pay, in which case you've got a set top box anyway, which is not reliant on your internets.

So what exactly am I getting if I install this thing then? Soccer AM? That comedy with the blokes out of the other comedy that wasn't funny either which no-one watched because it was on Sky?

Ah, cnet discussed pricing to be unnanounced, so i'm going to go ahead and assume I can pay for matches.

There's no way they'll let you PPV standard football. One-off events like boxing maybe. Think of this as an alternative to multiroom.

There would be no Sky if it wasn't for the fucking premiership. Ah well, they can have none of my money then, just like in the past when they've also had none of my money. Which is a shame because one game in every few I'd gladly shell out a good few quid on watching it. Their loss.

If there's something Sky are good at, it's making money. I thnk you'll find this isn't their loss at all.

I wonder how they'll go about getting that link between Sky customer and Xbox tag. I hope and hope it's not just available on Sky broadband.

Hopefully it will be a login process. I have a username and password for going online to check my bill and stuff although I never use it. I think it's called My Sky? So perhaps it will be that. I am quite hopeful about this. Is it just going to be a version of sky anytime with the same listings as what are currently available that week on anytime? Or is it going to be a library of films and tv shows available to watch on demand? Will be handy to be able to watch sky in my bedroom if I so please.

sky player on the pc works by tying your email address to your sky account, so you login to the web page, and then you get the player up where you can choose from several tv channels, and some On Demand stuff too, as for the live stuff, you can only watch channels that you've paid to watch on your sky set. So I can watch Sky Sports, but not Sky Movies for example.

I imagine they will do a similar sort of thing for the XBLA version

I quite like the new Sky HD interface, if only because I can cary on watching TV while using it. Don't like the way recordings fail silently and you don't find out until you go into the programme's "folder" though. That's very annoying.

I still think the original TiVo had the best interface for this sort of thing, but they patented the fuck out of it so people couldn't copy it.

What he said. Sky Player is an existing service that is coming to the 360, and it'll have the same features. So http://skyplayer.sky.com/vod/page/default/home.do will answer the questions in this thread about what it does.

After weeks of them going on and on about the new Sky cards, we keep having a message popping up telling us ours has been posted. Well great, perhaps it'll make the Sky+ box less shit.

And made a hamfisted fuckup of their attempted UK launch before withdrawing from the market forever, so now we can't get it.

Vista Media Centre has the best EPG GUI. It's totally lovely and has tons of features.

Why would you need anymore features than "What's on", "information", "record" and "series record" all no more than 3 button presses away?

"Record this show, on all channels, but only first run episodes". "Record this show on all channels but only keep one copy of each episode I don't already have".

I use it to watch sky sports in my home office. For that it is wonderful. If I had a laptop I could watch it wherever I wanted!

Speed, man. The new Sky EPG is horifically slow.

That might be only on Sky HD boxes though - do you get to watch the channel in a little box at the top right while you choose?

Again, it's more akin to something like Multiroom, a second sky box with less cabling hassles. And it will be useful for taking your Sky sub with you. Over the summer, Toby had a free trial of Sky Player for the Ashes. We would loaf at my house, playing games or whatever, and he'd have the cricket on in the background, streamed to my Macbook. (I'm not a Sky Sports subscriber, so he couldn't watch it on the TV).

Try defragging your box. My UI became a lot less sluggish when I did the full system maintenance (the one that wipes your planner) last week. There's a non-destructive one too.

Yes, the new UI is HD only.

It'd be great if instead of a Twitter channel we got a channel that played the sound of gippynigs talking to each other. That's a twitter channel.

I'm a Sky subber and my Sky+ box is next to my 360.

So... what will I gain from this?

There's only a slight ealy on pressing the "i" button, but I dunno what it was like before. We don't get a box showingus the programme on teh EPG, I don't think but will check at some point. I need to call SKY broadband as ask them, nciely, why my internets was previously 1.5megish and now it's 08.ish.

My sky+ box is next to the Xbox as well but I sometimes take my Xbox to bed with me so it will be useful for then. Also, I can't currently watch Sky TV on demand on my big telly unless it is one of the shows listed in sky anytime, so it will be good for that I suppose.

Our Sky HD box stops responding to signals from the remote for a couple of minutes at 7pm every night. Any idea why that might be? It's bizarre. The light flashes on the box showing it's received the input, but it doesn't do anything with it.

Leads to conversations like this several times a week:

Wife: "The remote's not working!"

Me: "Is it seven o'clock?"

Wife: "Oh, yeah, good call."

Mine says that too, but finishes with "The Wii homebrew players aren't showing the xvid you put on the memory stick"

Should've just bought a spare 360 for the lounge and streamed that shit.

Had an email from Sky today confirming Skyplayer will be with us on 360 very soon.

And a link to a pre-reg "send me information" page sweetened with a competition.

Just in case it need to be said, PlayTV is fucking awesome.

It's got a few problems, but does a fantastic job for the most part.

Bugger. I get the feeling Dealextreme's probably class as unauthorised then. :(

It'd would help if MS's own memory cards weren't so expensive, although maybe they've come down in price since I last checked.

D'y'reckon they'd make this change to the console's DRM so they could make their own brand memory cards cheaper?

I remind everyone that the PS3 can use any old laptop HDD and any old USB memory device. And it's still the inferior console.

I managed to grab a 64meg one from comet for about a fiver (although it said about £20 on the shelf, so I was pleasantly surprised) and that was 12 months ago. I've got pretty much everything on one from DealExtreme now though. :(

If I wanted to feign ignorance and assume I bought a genuine microsoft product from one of Hong Kong's finest, is there any way I can test it (apart from waiting to see if all my data vanishes after the update ?:| )?

Edit - £30 from Amazon!

I was thinking more along the lines of them lowering the RRP since flash memory is so cheap - £30 for 512mb still seems extortionate.. or is it wrong to compare them to USB pendongledrivesticks?

Technically? Not at all. They are just flash RAM like everything else. Commercially? Microsoft sell an 802.11a/b/g adaptor for £60. They are no strangers to gouging prices on accessories.

I'd imagine they'd block third-party wireless adaptors if they could too.

They do. No other USB wifi adaptor works. Well, it's not so much a matter as "blocks" so much as "not have any drivers for".
