So!
As I mentioned in passing in the Firefly thread last month, I am going to watch all of Firefly (in HD! Thanks, Doc) and then Serenity in one sitting.
I shall be doing this in my flat, in London, on the 24th October. This is a Saturday.
There will be beer.
You are invited.

By my reckoning, there is just over 11 hours of TV involved, so I figure we should kick off at around midday.

Well, that wasn't the topic title, was it?
Anyway, can you merge them together and get rid of all the off-topic stuff in the other one?
Or, you know, we'll just forget about the other one?

Speaking of which, I may have to bring in auxiliary seating, depending on numbers.

Floor space is available for sleeping, and the spare bed will be allocated via lottery if needed :)

I like this option. The other thread had no info that this one doesn't.

Ooh, I'd like to go to this, please!

After payday too, so I can do it. Yes. And thang yew Megabus for providing a reasonable way with £10 a journey. I'll have to check if I get that Saturday off first, though. And I hate using holiday.

Anyway.

Shiny!

Beside travel, I can't see anyone incurring any real expenses (unless they drink some sort of odd drink that I don't have).

I will buy a load of things like Pizza and stuff from Tesco, so food won't be a problem.
Craster is the foodie, so he can cook it all ;)

That seems a bit OTT though, getting a flight down on Saturday morning just to watch TV and drink beer with geeks. Pfft!

I'll go check the site.

Trains are cheaper & you miss out on the hassle of security & transfers. Much more pleasant IMO.

You've got Virgin trains or the sleeper from Glasgow & National Express from both Glasgow & Edinburgh :) & if you really want to go cheap you can go by Megabus, but they reek & take around 12 hours. Never again.

Train will take a while, though, won't it?
Flight time is 50 minutes, so realistically it's about a three-hour journey on the plane.

Both you and Wullie should come.

£15.99 flight on Saturday morning which gets there just after nine, so getting into the city for a nice time for starting at midday. About £40 for the return leg. I am going to go scope out the trains now as well. Just as a matter of interest of course, I'm not actually going to come.

I have to check with the boss.

So far Virgin trains is more expensive by at least £50 and also has much less convenient arrival times.

EDIT- haha, the bus is 99p to get there. The downside is it a night bus and it takes about three years. I think I'd happily pay an extra £15 to fly.

It's only 4 or 5 hours, if you go on the sleeper it takes longer but you can have a kip or get drunk & stumble into Euston completely plastered at 7am :DD

4 or 5 hours as compared to one hour, for a more expensive method of travel which doesn't have any services arriving on Saturday morning. Also, if I was planning a few days or more then the time woldn't be too annoying but I can't stay up all night when planning to stay up all the next day and have a late night!

Only done that once too. The route used to be Liverpool>Stoke>London (they don't bother with Stoke now it seems) so when the bus got to us, the folk who got on at Liverpool got all the best seats and on the way back, people took turns to smoke in the toilet, which I unfortunately sat a little to close to for my liking. Can't say I'm overly gutted that there's no Stoke service anymore.

Much as I'm tempted to put my hat in the ring, the way my luck is running at the moment another family member will die suddenly and unexpectedly soon, a week or so before the date necessitating another funeral like the one this Friday keeping me from BBBC.

My last trip to London was cancelled for that very reason. I'm hoping four in the last year means I have met my sadness quota for a while now. Hope you're ok

I'm fine, thanks for asking - I was upset last week when it happened. It is a drag as can be expected. It was my father in law who passed away quite suddenly last week - he was quite old - he was 86 a week ago last Saturday and he had cancer - although fine up until that weekend, all things considered, he took a very sudden turn for the worse Saturday night, was admitted to hospital Sunday lunchtime and deteriorated rapidly from there. He passed away on Tuesday morning last week. My mother in law is not coping at all, understandably in regard to having been married for 55 years to someone who did everything for her, but enormously exacerbated by what appears to be early signs of dementia - she basically has no short term memory to speak of and this is the biggest problem in the near future.

That's rubbish, I'm sorry to hear that :( Cancer is such a dick. Even though you know it is going to happen it still is awful when it happens and it always seems to happen when the person is actually doing ok. Best wishes for your mother in law as well, unfortunatly I have experience of family with dementia too. I hope things start getting better for you.

IMPORTANT NEWS!

There is a prize for the most nerdy item someone brings with them. If it's clothing, you have to wear it.
Turning up with Gaywood doesn't count.

Why not watch them from 8am - 10am, then come to the Firefly thing?

Ah, NUTS. This would have been perfect - I'm off to see the Nuffle game at Wembley on the 25th, so could have bowled up, passed out on Grim...'s floor then staggered to the tube to watch burly Americans cuddling each other for three hours. But I've already committed to doing something even nerdier on the Saturday. :(

Not a million miles off. Games convention in Watford.

Might be able to make it down circa Our Mrs. Reynolds / Jaynestown, actually. Hmmm.

Oh, also; I have been granted permission to return the favour by inviting strangers off the Internet up to mine. I live in the bustling metropolis that is Saltcoats, a vibrant hub of neds and grannies. Cannae beat it!

So I will do that soon if people are interested in such an expedition.

We are coming up to Scotland for a wedding next May, so may take you up on that offer. ;)

Only if Wullie, Jen and Kalmar are there, mind.

Oh, also; I have been granted permission to return the favour by inviting strangers off the Internet up to mine. I live in the bustling metropolis that is Saltcoats, a vibrant hub of neds and grannies. Cannae beat it!

So I will do that soon if people are interested in such an expedition.

Hmm, have you ever been on wee Cumbrae or Grand Cumbrae?

My Dad's from Greenock, and lived in Wemyss Bay for ages, my Granddad still lives in Greenock. (he's 95+)

There's a pub in Largs that we used to go to, that did the best fish and chips I've ever had, and then I had a Knickerbocker Glory.

Never been to either although I have been to both Arran and Millport which are next to them. My cousin works in Greenock in the police and lives just around the corner from me. My mum is from Largs so we used to be there every weekend visiting my Grandparents and Great Aunt and Uncle until they all died. They didn't all die at once, just realised it might sound like that :p I don't know about fish and chips, but Largs is famous for Nardinis which was/is an ice cream shop so maybe you had your Knickerbocker Glory there?

No it was definetly a pub, i can picture it now, it's on the coast road, and there are two ramps to this place (an in road and an out road), the pub (maybe a hotel) is on the south side, and it had 2 entrances.

I'm going to use Google maps to find it.
