Going to see it, tonight. Two good films in a row? Seems unlikely to be honest.

Seriously, very nicely done.

Yep, man's inhumanity to prorn and all that. It was quite moving, which is good going for a scifi action film these days.

Why did the ship stop in the first place?

I don't think they told us exactly but just said something about all the higher up aliens having deserted it for some reason. The ones that were left were a sort of worker class.

Even Christopher? Although fair enough, if the black stuff was just needed to get the command module back up, and the mothership was just waiting.

The way I read it was, they were a subservient, less intelligent class (I was thinking worker ants) and Christopher was a freak with initiative. Or maybe a loan survivor of the more intelligent, officer class.

They did give the impression of him (and his son) being far more intelligent throughout, the only exception being the nest shack - but we don't know who set that up.

I still haven't seen District 9. It's not even playing at our cinema anymore. One week! Idiots.

Didn't they mention something had fallen off the ship, but nobody could find it? Was that about why it had stopped, or about something else entirely?

District 9 was brillzors. Fucking gibbage, and a Mech! And forking prorns. Noone said "broo", though, so minus 1 banana for that.

Best film I've seen in years.

Even if they were all dead intelligent, they were all ill, so got brought down, and then had no way of getting back up. Still, I did wonder why (a) the prorns couldn't use their whizzy weapons to take over Jo-burg, and (b) why the evil scientists didn't take prorns up to the ship and make them make it work and steal all the technology

Still, I bloody loved the film so I had no interest in picking holes in it.

Yes. The humans were theorising -- but later events in the film prove them right -- that some sort of control module (the thing under Christopher's shack) fell off the ship, and without it the entire ship was inoperable.

We need a spoilers-allowed District 9 thread.

Nah, they weren't all dead intelligent - when they're trying to collect signatures that's pretty clear - the aliens are mostly idiots (just like humans), and some of them aggressive. I assume the evil scientists gave up trying to get any sense out of them.

I wonder if Christopher knew about the control pod (and how to work it and everything) because he was in it when it came down.

Why the guns weren't used isn't well explained though - I thought they were actually not working for the aliens in their malnourished state, but then when Wikkus and Christopher go to break in to the MNU base, Christopher is able to fire a weapon.

Shall we split this then?

I just had this email:

Quote:
Hi,

What kinds of investment will you advice me? Because presently I am in Africa and I have a substantial amount of money as my inheritance here that I have the intention to invest in your country so I will offer you 10% of the whole sum for your kind assistance to transfer and invest the money in your country.

The origin of this money is my late father contractual savings so it is 100% risk free. However this transaction will be concluded within 3 working days upon your confirmation to help me. Please include your direct phone number.

Yours Sincerely,

Issa Nana

They're not even trying any more. She hasn't deliberately fucked up her grammar and syntax enough, so she clearly can't genuinely have her father's contractual savings 100% risk free.

I found it pretty grim viewing really, but it was well done.
I guess I feel like others here when I say, there were holes that could be picked, but id rather just leave it be as a nice peice of cinema and a refreshing look on sci fi, and good social commentary.

The guy they chose as the lead PMC guy was excellent too

That was slightly surprising in a film that's supposedly about race and that.

Having said that, it's probably fairly realistic. I believe there's plenty of left over Nigerian mercenary types left in South Africa after fighting against apartheid there, probably doing a lot of the organised crime now.

The witch-doctory stuff about eating the aliens and that? A relative of mine was over there last year and brought back some newspaper cuttings (the newspapers are in English). I'd believe it.

The Nigerians do do that sort of ex-mercenary outlaw thing (as do a number of other African nationalities), and the witchdoctory stuff is sadly still endemic across Africa - there was a channel 4 docu recently about a load of witch doctors who use human body parts.

Yep, that's what I'm on about. All this stuff about bodies being found with the eyes taken out for eating / witchcraft purposes, just reported matter-of-fact next to adverts and normal stories about traffic accidents and whatnot. Some king-hell shit going on there, as you say it's not confined to Nigeria but they clearly have a bit of a reputation.

The ever-reliable Source Of All Truth, Wikipedia, suggests a sequel may be in the offing at some point. I'm fairly convinced a 'Three Years Later...' story could end up being really very amazing indeed.

Yes and no for me.

I love how the story wrapped up, but I enjoyed the whole experience so much I'd like some more please.

Well, it's Neil Blomkamp himself that's been saying he'd like to do another if this one is successful enough, so it would at least be in the exact same hands.

28 Weeks Later proved to me that sometimes, in the right hands, it is possible to make a fantastically good sequel out of a film that, on the face of it, doesn't require one.

It's on various video sharing sites, including an official one. No need to torrent. It's very good.

"If it did enough business", of course. The whole film was shot and financed by Peter Jackson privately before it was sold for distribution, so they couldn't have known a sequel was possible -- but I agree they've deliberately left the door open. And hell, I think District Ten could rock.

Given the, what £30m budget, it really did look the bollocks. You can't actually tell the guy's background was CGI, as the CGI was so unobtrusive.

A sequel would be brilliant provided that it is as good or better than the original, and isn't shit or different.
