Personally what I'd want from one is controls from No Mercy, multiple appearances for one character/move set like in No Mercy, the objectives system from legends of wrestlemania and also the taunt system from that.

I'd like to have a story (season) mode where you can build friendships and rivalries with other wrestlers, rather than it being just a set story. You could also do it proper wrestling style where you have to lose certain matches but in a particular way. It would be nice to have some kind of audience reaction gauging to stop you repeatedly doing the same move all the time or whatever.

I'd have Madeleine McCann fight Kermit the Frog in a lava pit whilst Dermot O'Leary, Piers Morgan and a robotic Davina McCall throw boulders at them whilst the theme tune from the Cosby Show plays in the background.

I need to be able to play as The Rock without having to complete it fifteen times first.

It would need a decent Royal Rumble mode. The MD Royal Rumble game was great, the DC game less so.

If the real wrestling ladies can choose their own breast size, why can't I?

Sounds like you want Fire Pro Wrestling. Widely regarded as "great".

Mali wins.

No, really. That's a wrestling game I might actually want to play, not just homo-erotic shaven man groping button basher 2009. Sport and pretend-sport games are particularly bad for merely shoving famous names and tedious realism in rather than doing fun things.

Seemless entrances, instead of:

  • Load for five minutes
  • Show wrestler #1 enter the arena
  • Load for five minutes
  • Show wrestler #2 enter the arena
  • Load for five minutes
  • Both wrestlers appear in the ring

Two player co-op, where the objective isn't to win, but to put on a great match.

I wish more of their games had received western releases - Fire Pro Wrestling D on the Dreamcast seemed brilliant but I could never get the hang of it.

And more games should be like Ultimate Muscle on the Cube...

You have to be joking 8)

I used to play a game in year 7 in maths when particularly bored. You'd get a calculator, and press + 1 = . Then you'd keep pressing '=' as rapidly as possible, hoping to reach a particular number within a specified time limit.

This game was later given a graphical update and renamed "Smackdown V Raw".

I've never liked the fighting system in Fire Pro. Too fiddly. It looks a bit funny as well.

I really wanted to like Firepro but it is just too fiddly... anyway, the perfect wrestling game? A faster No Mercy with better graphics and updated roster... TNA preferably!!

I think a full-on simulator would be interesting. Everything is rehearsed beforehand, and you have to hit the right beats at the right time. BUT you also have to strike a good balance between chorography and realism -- pull off a move too smoothly and the crowd thinks it looks fake, do it too roughly and you risk injuring the other wrestler in real life.

All that sounded a lot better in my head.

This is what gets me with peoples opinions of wrestling.. sure, it's fake fighting.. but most of the time it's not rehearsed. The wrestlers will talk through the match back stage and then go out and do it. Some good ones even make it up as they go along!

The other thing people don't seem to stop and think about is the time they spend in front of the crowd when they're not fighting.
Often it'll be just a wrestler, with a microphone, in a dark ring with a spotlight on them, delivering a monologue to far, far more people than a theatre actor would.
Edge did a ten-minute piece in front of 15,000 people at the O2, and only made one small mistake, that he covered up very well.
Fifteen thousand!

Fire Pro is a Marmite game and to be fair it was probably meant to be.

It is sad when you see a wrestler with massive talent who just doesn't know how to use the mic. And slightly annoying when you see lesser talents make it big because they can work the crowd.

Anyway a good idea for a wrestling game would be to be able to back stab your partner mid match and perform a massive heel turn (become a bad guy). Or have sections where you go into the ring for a promo and you can choose a dialogue branch that leads to good guy, bad guy status and have your matches in the game adjust accordingly. More of the soap opera needs to go into wrestling games as in real life this is just as important, if not more so, than the matches.

Another idea. You are the up and coming star of a fledgling wrestling organisation. As the "face" of the company you have to perform in exciting matches (win or lose) to get people to come to your shows and get people to watch your pay-per-views. You could also manage a roster of other wrestlers and put high fliers against hardcore maniacs etc and take control of them as well.

Why? I quite like having some wrestlers with charisma and acting skills, even if their ring skills are sometimes lacking. It's good to have a mixture with people with different skills.

The reason I enjoy some wrestling games is that if you disregard all the soap opera and staged events, you can pretend it's a real sport.

Really? You might as well watch MMA if you're going to do that. Bad acting, ridiculous story lines and stupid comedy is all part of the appeal for me. Watching two people pretend to hit each other would be really boring otherwise.

I think the charisma side is actually more important than the wrestling skill. I have seen some matches that were technically not that great but I enjoyed them because I cared about the match and the wrestlers and all the other stuff before it. Otherwise you really are just watching two men play fight. That is why the excellent wrestler but can't work a crowd thing is more annoying because some people no matter what they do will never get over.

Wrestling is a real sport in the USA, is it not?
They do it at high schools and stuff.

Not quite the same as the TV stuff though, is it? There's loads of ground hugging, like in UFC. Yawn.

Yes, but all the most interesting moves require two or more people to be complicit in what they're doing. You can't suplex someone if they don't want you to. You can just go deadweight.

I had a friend during A-Levels, who insisted (and got visibly pissed off with anyone suggesting otherwise) that wrestling (as in the stuff on TV) was genuine. I laughed at him lots.

I think he only watched it for the men though.

Yes and headbutt the referee if they don't like the way he calls it, crippling him for life.

Anyway, it was this until Rumble Roses XX came out.

Not that ANY OF THIS MATTERS, as MaliA won the internet with his post AND was the first to respond! A bit like 1 vs 100, really.

German suplexes are possible, even on a resisting opponent.

Not pictured: Fyodor (the white bloke) winning, seconds later.

Randleman is pretty god damn scary though.

I wish there had been more discussion of how to make a great wrestling game in this thread but never mind, that's the internets for you.

I told you, remake No Mercy with an updated rosta and all that..

Seriously though, I had a wrestling management sim ages ago where you played the boss of either WWF, WCW or ECW. YOu hired people, fired people, put people in angles and decided what matches you'd have on your TV shows. I think it was called EWF or something like that but it was great!

I took over the WWF and made some popular decisions like making the Barbarian my intercontinental champ and hiring Rob Van Dam to be a world champ and feuding with Scott Steiner.

It was great!
