Ok so JC says " Remember, muscle weighs more than fat. If you start losing weight your body burns off the fat and it is replaced with muscle if you are excercising. I have seen people lose no weight but look half their size."

And then he says I am wrong when I say he's wrong. This is on some poor fucker's Facebook page though so I brought it over here to save vandalism.

I say you cannot do the above. You cannot "replace" fat with muscle unless you also drastically change your diet and start lifting. At no point when you are losing weight can you gain any muscle whatsoever.

What does everyone else think? GAYWOOD - BRING SCIENCE.

If you're exercising to lose fat (which is a rather pointless thing to do, as you have to do a lot of exercise to burn off significant calories) you would indeed build muscle as you do so.

Muscle and fat are two different things. You will increase muscle and lose fat by exercising/eating properly, but one cannot replace the other - it's an old wives' tale.

Which, if you were dieting would feed from the fat aswell. Well, so long as you were burning more calories than you were consuming.

And MYP. I didn't say that. What I said was if you were dieting and excercising you may not appear to be losing weight because muscle is heavier than fat.

So to simplify. Your body burns calories for energy. KJ etc. So, essentially fat is a reserve, basically a calorie store cupboard. Thus, if you start excercising the muscles need to be fed with energy. When they are they will use energy and if you're burning more than you're eating your body will default to it's larder.

You're still wrong though. If you are dieting there is absolutely no chance whatsoever that you will be gaining any muscle mass. So if you're not losing weight then you're not losing weight - it's not because you've suddenly got bigger muscles because you are running or lifting or doing any other form of excercise.

Something like 2000 calories to lose 1lb of fat.

I cycle between 40-70 miles a week* and I actually seem to have gained weight!

Yes your BMI drops because muscle is more dense and far heavier than fat. Which was my intial point. Sometimes when people diet and excercise they are fooled by the scales. They weigh the same as they did before but look a lot thinner.

This is exactly what I said.

Uh, can I try?

* Exercise burns off calories.
* Less calories get turned into fat, so the amount of fat reduces.
* Exercise also increases muscles, so the muscles increase.

The fat isn't being turned into muscles. It's quite possible for the two separate things to be happening at the same time though, surely.

3500 calories represents 1lb of fat.

Bear in mind though a one hour bike ride at moderate speeds burns off 750 ish calories - so that's the equivalent of a full meal saved.

Which is what I meant. No, you can't magically turn fat into muscle, but, you can replace fat burned with additional muscle. So, if one was to be really picky then no, you can't turn fat into muscle. Thing is? if you are dieting and excercising then that is basically what you are doing in a literal sense.

Not according to my Garmin thing. I burn about 500 an hour according to it's calculations.

Here, as an example. I call it the reverse Jenny Craig pics.

In this pic

Image

I weighed 12 stone. I looked fucking ill. However, what it really was was working out every morning and night to get rid of stress and anger (mm, divorce).

Now. in this pic.

Image

I weigh a pound or two over 13. But look at the difference !

Correct

Not quite right but it'll do - however the above means the below cannot happen

Quote:
* Exercise also increases muscles, so the muscles increase.

Excercise only increases muscle if you are eating more than your maintenance calories. So say your maintenance calories are 2500 calories a day then you need to eat more than that and lift to gain muscle. Unless you are some kind of magic being then you will also gain some fat along with muscle. When you are happy enough with your muscles and start cutting your calories but still excercising you will lose more fat as muscle increases your overall metabolic rate.

You cannot gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. That's biology.

You have no taste.

In pic1 you can make out my chest muscles and complete lack of stomach. Also, bear in mind I am wearing size 32 jeans which my legs half filled.

Here, better pic. This was taken a few months back. Still weigh 13 and a couple of lbs. Oh and I'm wearing another fantastic Tshirt.

No you're not though. If you're dieting an excercising then you are reducing your muscles (fat as well mind you and at a greater rate but you will still lose muscle).

To the cochrane collaboration I go for final some evidence based flannel. Bear with me - I may be some time

You will only reduce muscle when the body runs out of fat and starts burning the muscle off. And for that you would need to be extremely lazy and not eat anything.

Food = body fuel. Fat = fuel reserve. Muscles need feeding in order to grow. If you are excercising those muscles they will grow, but they need feeding.

For example. Walking is excercise. Walking builds calf muscles and thighs. That takes energy. Energy which if you are not providing will be taken from your fat reserve.

Right. And in order to really bulk up you need the calories. If not? then once you run out of fat reserves working out will only burn muscle. Your body will literally eat itself.

not really. Your body works well and will try and keep stable. If your bmi drops too low you become weaker so you can't exercise. So you will never have 0 fat.

No. You'll get fat at a slower rate. If you do some weightlifting you will also gain muscle. So you'll get even heavier.

The only time your muscles will reduce is when you are not feeding them. So, if you dieted like mad (600 calories a day, literally starved yourself) then you would burn everything. That includes fat (which would go first) and then muscle. As I said, your body would literally start feeding on itself.

You would become incredibly weak and end up looking like an Ethiopian. No fat or muscle, just literal skin and bone.

Yep - to build muscle you have to basically tear them through weightlifting. Your body then repairs the tears and adds extra volume to prevent further damage. In order for the body to add that additional volume it needs more than your normal maintenance calories.

your muscle is a finite set of fibres. They will get bigger if used a lot but reduce when not used. New fibres are not made.

Thanks :D haha. I wish that was the only difference.

I'm not exactly fat but I feel it. Can't wait til the hydro is over and I can go back to excercising hard.

Pish :P

From what I remember from doing Advanced Highers in P.E. & Human Biology. When dieting your body will catabolise both fat & muscle, the only way you can maintain your muscle is by doing some form of resistance training on top of your jogging/cycling/swimming/whatever.

Saying that, like Kovacs says there's a balancing point where your diet matches your training, so you'll waste less muscle & see better results from that. You'll also find that all the exercise boosts your metabolism & your diet will have to change with it or you'll start wasting muscle again.

EDIT: Turns out I was wrong about muscle being the bodies preferred source of energy when faced with a lack of calories.

A friend of mine said 'Rod Zombie' years ago, which amused me greatly. So it stuck.

Then there was the time Iron Monkey were quizzed about him. Hilarity ensued.

(As we all know, Rob does have a brother. But not, as far as I'm aware, a twin. The brother is called Spider (sadly not Spider Zombie, which would be the best name ever) and fronts Powerman 5000.)

You cannot gain muscle and lose fat at the same time. That's biology.

Hang on. Let's say I eat 8,000 calories a day and do no exercise.
Then I start doing lots of exercise. I'll still be getting fat at the same rate?

No. You'll get fat at a slower rate. If you do some weightlifting you will also gain muscle. So you'll get even heavier.

But if I did enough exercise to burn up 8,000 calories per day, I'd stop putting on muscle?

no as long as you are using your muscles they will grow to there limit. It does depend on the exercise. I remember i used to bench press 135kg it took a while to build up to that, can't do that now

That's some good going. Free weights or Smith Press?

I am surprised if it is true that you can't reduce the fat on your body whilst increasing muscles.

What if you do loads of exercise, which knacks your muscles and burns off a ton of fat (say you run a marathon and then bench press for an hour... maybe a bad example, but I'm sure there's a balance in there somewhere). If you then eat a load of protein stuff, at the right quantities, and take in very little fat... surely you'll have reduced the fat in your body whilst increasing muscles?

Or if you eat a seafood diet while slicing into your belly with a dagger.

I agree with John Coffee. This is why body builders and fools like them need to eat that special calorific stuff to maintain the bulk. If they didn't, they'd look more like long distance runners and would be incapable of lifting such huge weights.

Might have to try the zero calorie diet for a week - maybe the odd glass of water now and again - to see how much weight I can lose.
