Carefully. Pet insurance is even more riddled with shitty get-out clauses than other types of insurance. My dog was ill for the last year of his life, requiring £100/mnth of tablets; none of the policies I had almost taken out on him the year before would have covered it due to the length of the illness and his age.

The two I have now are not insured. I will reconsider that when they are a bit older.

At £400 quid to have Nanook x-rayed, and only £10 a month insurance... the maths has worked in our favour..

In both instances (Crispin's long illness and eventual death, and shutting Jake's tail in the door) I was better off without insurance.

I've had the same view as with mobile phone insurance, as much as I hate to say that about pets.

My two cats are 12 and 13. At £10 a month since I got them, I'd have paid nearly £3000 in premiums. The only times they've had to go to the vets are for Mork's recent abscess, and to get them both spayed and vaccinated.

Not really the same, as that should be covered under your home contents insurance.

Except that it's not always about total cost over time, it's usually about how much being able to put your hands on thousands of pounds unexpectedly buggers up your plans.

In my recent search for cheap house insurance, a precise total of 0 companies offered mobile phone cover as standard. All offered it as an additional extra. In fairness, unless you have sod all excess on your policy, home (contents) insurance is shit unless you get completely cleaned out or smash up something very expensive on a regular basis.

Or the building burns down, or floods etc etc. I'm not taking the risk of losing all my worldly possessions, tbh.

Indeed. I spend much, much more than the house insurance premiums on new stuff each year. If everything went, and wasn't insured, I'd be fucked.

Mobile phones get lost all the time and what's more, people break/lose them deliberately in order to try and get the latest model. I'm not surprised nobody will touch them.

Your insurance could be minimal, def would want fire though. In case some one elses flat catches fire. Do you have sprinklers as they would kill off all your electronic stuff..

Fire is definitely a risk as anyone can accidentally leave the grill on when drunk and hungry, then passing out while you're cooking food, right?

Still, the LV charges us about £130/yr for contents so it's no major hardship.

The main reason I have considered home contents insurance is for the fiancee's diamonds.

I have home contents insurance which costs me £12 a month. I would much rather pay £12 a month and not even notice I'm paying it, than have everything destroyed in a fire or something and then have to take ages trying to get back to a point of normality.
If I had pets I would insure them without a doubt. Regardless of wether it was value based on cost of premium each month x amount of months I had my pets, I would want to pay it just so as if something did happen I could get them seen by a vet without worrying about finding £xxx to try and pay for the treatment. Different if you have a decent amount of cash but I'm poor!

They all harp on about door locks, but none of them ask if you have a fucking 24-hour security guard with a fucking dog.

Yeah, we fall into some sort of weird stats hole. Moving from a first floor flat without locking windows or alarm, and a recent claim on another flat, to a mid-terrace with gated alleyways, super-duper locks and an alarm bumped the price up £20. Still way under half what the nearest competitor could do for equivalent cover.
