As usual, I must call on the BEEX hive mind. I am going to but a new PC as mine is really creaking now. Just a couple of probably staggeringly obvious questions for someone whose calculator causes him problems...

1) Can i somehow import across my firefox bookmarks and passwords?

2) Any recommendations for a decent cheapish wireless mouse/keyboard ( i run a work compy off the same desk so it's handy to be able to sling them out of the way)

3)Is it worth splurging on an added upgrade to Windows 7?

Merci, beaucoups mes petite enfants or words to those effect.....

1) If you go into Bookmarks > Organise Bookmarks, there are options to export and import in there. You can get a plugin to export your password details, but I don't have it installed on this machine.
*goes to check*
This, I guess.

Bear in mind MozBackup didn't seem to like me backing up under XP and trying to restore in Vista. I had to manually bugger with things.

I got this wireless keyboard and mouse combo a few years ago and it's still going strong now. Well, the keyboard is; the mouse went an bit odd after I spilt Guinness on it.

Gah! You are a psychic, as that's exactly what i'm doing. Thanks for the tip.
Thanks Myp, for the keyboard tip, invisible hand pointed to it at currys for 12 quid, so that's a result too.

The Windows easy transfer tool allows for all your setting s to be moved to Vista or Win 7.

my move to Vista was a very easy experience.

I will probably play very few pc games - possibly point and click stuff so speed is no issue....

Plus the benefit of being able to sling them out of the way and spread out my work computer/paperwork outweighs ANY accuracy issue....

And another question...Is there such thing where you can switch a monitor between 2 different inputs, i.e. some sort of 'junction box' so two compys can use the same monitor without switching in and out at the monitor?

Yes they are called a KVM

and come in many flavours.

Which can include PS2, USB, DVI, VGA.

It will handle mouse, keyboard and screen for more than 1 PC, laptop, server, etc

Infact I am trying to do somethign with them for work need to have access to a PC which is over 20m away form its screen mouse and keyboard.

They have batteries and rely on power. Which is a total PITA.

Just personal preference really but I just don't really see the point unless you have a monstrous desk and the cables either won't reach without putting the PC where you don't want it, or, you want to sit about a mile away from your PC.

But that's not usually the case. People usually buy them and put them right where they could have put a regular kbm combo completely taking away the need for them to be wireless. Thus, they serve no real function.

mr JC let me introduce you the world of rechargeable batteries..

and they last about 6 months anyway, so changing battiers twice a year is not a PITA, it is what i do with my sky remote anyway :)

Shame. I brought a KVM (nice one too with all the cables..) recently for £13. Put it on ebay a week later and got £2.

When looking at KVMS make absolutely sure they come with the cables or it can get very expensive very quickly.

Ah excellente. I only really need it to switch the monitors as the 'other' computer is a work lappy in a docking station. Would it be ok for that?

yup.. just need a cheap vga or dvi-d one then.

or you can get a monitor with dual inputs and use that to switch... Most Dells have that option..

I am a complete belm with computers so at least it's all giving you some amusement at least! It's a fairly recent dell monitor, only has input for one blue lead, flip knows if it can take some sort of other input.

God, i'm shit with technology....

Look at the back of the monitor..

If it is dell it should have a blue lead (vga) and a white lead (DVI this is longer and will have 15 pins and a - pin)

Or post your monitor model number..

Yep, it has a hole labelled dvi'd with a white port - is this a better input than the vga and could i then switch between the two at will with both on?

Again, many many apologies this has turned into a computer advice for bell-ends form.

Yes I think it is a better input as DVI is digital, all depends what you are using it for.

If you connect both leads to the screen and one to each PC.. there should be buttons on the front of the screen which allow you to switch between.

Try a KVM with your Dell monitor. It'll work really well on dual output mode.
