Good crikey!

This is going to be a) awesome or b) rubbish

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_i ... tory=24886

Quote:
when Dust 514 launches, the map of EVE, currently divined only by player structures owned in the PC game, will also take into account infantry successes and failures within the console game. Players in the PC MMO can "fund mercenaries and give them goals" in the console title.

So now 360 owners can enjoy alarm clock operations.

I'm not paying one hundred million ISK for a ship to keep my clone safe while myp dies facedown in the mud.

Actually, that sounds aces. Count me in.

This is a delightful idea. If it worked a bit like Planetside, only a bit less shit, it could be excellent.

That would be brilliant. Shooting up troop carriers even before they hit the ground.

CCP: Through higher values of money the player supports his soldiers more. And yes, money will be the minimum an Eve player can transfer to his soldiers.

K: And in return the Eve player get's the corresponding Sector of one planet, if his soldiers win the battle. If he owns most sectors on a planet, he will own the planet. But what does he get from that?
CCP: What can be done with the planets will be announced next year at the time our next expansion is due. This will introduce planetary control. If a player controls a certain amound of planets in one sun system, he will own the whole system. That expands our souverenity system and makes warfare within Eve more transparent and shifts it to a whole new level.

Flip! That looks a bit special. I'm rather surprised, but it amusingly plays into the 'spreadsheet gamers' on PC's and 'meathead shooters' on the Eggs Box. Wonder how many map varients they'll have to keep the illusion that you're fighting for different planets up?

This is only the start. Win a bit of territory on a planet and then draft in Mimi to manage the area Harvest Moon style and you'll soon have crops to trade too.

Quote:
... battles take place on dynamic battlefields about 5 kilometers across. Unlike EVE itself, there will be a cap to the number of players per battle — CCP is 'still playing with numbers' (and presumably watching the development of 256-player MAG with interest), but assures us that this will not be less than 64 players. There will be a command structure, with infantry and squadron leaders on each side led by a player-commander on board the hulking Mobile Command Center airship. The commander will effectively be playing a real-time strategy game with living units, and will have an RTS-style view of the battlefield. He'll be dependent on the situational awareness of infantry players to clear the fog of war. He'll also be the target, with the ultimate aim of a battle — after several, varying sub-objectives — being to destroy the opposing side's MCC.

MIGHT WELL WANT. Not a game that will suit dabblers looking for a quick blast though -- but then we have a lot of those. There's a gap in the market for more strategic, massively team orientated shooters, I think.

Eurogamer says it has micro-payments.

Hmmm, so a presumably full price Xbox title with micro-payments.

Damn. As it stands I'm out then. Hell I would have preferred a subscription fee. I hate it when character strength is proportional to what you'll pay.

Really?

I doubt this is going to be free to download and it doesn't look like an XBLA game, and they've confirmed micro-payments.

Of course I would love to be wrong. Here is hoping on some more details soon. I think a FPS console game tying into an MMO is really really interesting.

It's the "full price" bit I was wondering about. Seems to me the most sensible business model here is to distribute on disk (clearly cannot be XLBAH, I agree) but not to charge very much for the client. The EvE client is free to download, after all.

Actually, the most sensible arrangement is for Microsoft to allow the client to be downloaded from the Xbox Marketplace for free, but without the size (etc) constraints associated with XBLAH. Depends how badly they want MMOs on the 360.

Thing is I suspect there would be a very healthy market for micro-transactions on XBL. Hell they sell clothes for Miis for >£1 a pop after all. And it's not much of a step for them to give you game benefits.

I suspect they can get a healthy sales via a full price disk & micro-transactions.

:(

Damn well hope you are right though.

I have more faith in the free market than you do. If it comes in too expensive, it'll fail, and either get cheaper or be replaced by something else that is cheaper. If it comes in at what you consider to be too expensive but succeeds anyway, well, I'm afraid it wasn't actually too expensive.

Er, thats exactly what I said.

I said that I think that the users of XBL will happily pay full price and also buy microtransactions.

What, like the Games-on-Demand thing they're doing?

As to Micropayments, EA have been doing it for years... in fact, in NFS:Shift, you can either buy cars with in game money, or with MS Moon Money.

I don't see the harm, as long as the stuff you have to pay for is available elsewhere for free. Which in this case appears to be correct, you can get in-game money for real money, but you can get in game money for running missions.

Might be worth noting that EvE is the only MMO that allows you to directly purchase in-game cash for real world cash (well, sort of directly; you buy a timecode card, good for 60 days of EvE play, and auction it in-game).

It is a strange state of affairs that you can pay to avoid having to play your game. It also ties in well with what Dara O'Brian* said about not being able to access all the content you paid for. It also adds massive incentive to fill there game with grind to encourage you to skip it.

It's not that I'm saying that it isn't viable, or that people don't like it. It's just I personally find it off putting and if it becomes standard then my hobbie will start to shrink and retreat and I'll end up like Chinny.

Still maybe we are getting ahead of ourselves. It could all be non balance effecting stuff for sale. Fancy hats and so on. I can get behind that somewhat.

* Official Skeptobot reader - maybe.

One would imagine, in a perfect world, alliances and corporations would use the DUST514 teams as a very cheap force multiplier. In EvE, pod pilots are viewed as gods, being immortal and fabulously rich beyond all comprehension of world dwellers. So, the top-est most king of Dust teams could be paid, in world dweller terms, handsomely, enabling them to buy weapons and stuff like that to fight on planet. Those items are already in the database of EvE, so it could be integrated in very well. The enemy would then have to do the same, so you've two teams competing for lucrative contracts. I think that if the EvE players fund the DUST514 players as true mercenaries, it could end up working very, very well indeed.

After all, in EvE, you're only as good as your reputation, I don't see why the same metric cannot be applied to DUST.

You'll have to pay a one-off fee to play PlayStation 3-exclusive MMO shooter Dust 514, developer CCP has confirmed.

A payment of between $10 and $20 will be converted into in-game currency.

"In the beginning you have to pre-buy credits, so you pay something like $10-$20 to enter the game and you get the equivalent number of credits in the game once you do that," CCP boss Hilmar Veigar Pétursson told Eurogamer sister site GamesIndustry.biz.

"We call this the cover charge."

Despite the payment, CCP insists gamers are getting Dust 514, which ties into PC-exclusive MMO Eve Online, for free.

"We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it."

What, exactly, you'll be able to spend your virtual money on is yet to be decided.

"We have some initial assumptions but we'll put it out there and see how the player base during the trials reacts to it," CCP said.

When is this happening?

CCP showcased the Unreal Engine 3-powered game during Sony's E3 press conference last month. A closed beta will happen at the end of the year ahead of a full PlayStation Network download-only release in spring 2012.

As to why it's a PS3 exclusive:
Quote:
The console shooter directly connects to the PC MMO Eve Online, which launched in 2003. Dust 514 and Eve Online will share one "vibrant universe" - one single-shard super computer server.

"Sony allows us to use our systems," CCP CTO Halldor Fannar explained to Eurogamer.

"Microsoft has Xbox Live. They're very strict on that. There are a lot of issues we run into. It may be a basic thing people don't realise, but with Dust and Eve on Sony's network, we can allow them to chat together. Voice chat, text chat, that's all one world.

"One of the reasons for the partnership with Sony is because they're opening up new ways to do these things.

"We're going to be managing most of it. We're using PlayStation just for credentials, stuff like that. Then it's all our stuff.

"With our agreement with Sony they seem to be fine with our three month expansion cycle. They've been looking at the MMO space for a while, trying to understand why something like that hasn't still happened on the console. They're coming to terms with it. There are certain things they have to relax just to allow these things to function."

I've long thought that Microsoft are hobbling the 360 with too many restrictions around online play.

Possible problem: The DUST players have to be exceedingly poor compared to the EvE ones. EvE players are emant to be demigods and filthy rich, so I hope that there's something ordered about this.

Well, the two don't play together directly. So how is that a problem?

Being honest, I've not read much of it past 'integrated'.

That's all fine, but what has changed about XBox between now and a couple of years ago when I started subbing to Eve on the basis that you were banging on about how it would integrate with this game coming out for my 360? Because you were very keen for us to ump onboard from that premise at the time...

MS had a separate payment system for Phantasy Star Online.

You can register for the beta of this now:

Might as well sign up. Assuming you have a PS3, that is.
