I know we were talking about them (or a lack of them). This article comes from a non-public website, so I'll just copy it here:

Quote:
SECTION 8TM REVEALS NEW X SERVER FOR THE XBOX 360

Players Will Be Able to Host Xbox 360® Game Servers on their Windows®-based PC

Midlothian, VA - August 12, 2009 – Section 8™ publisher SouthPeak Games along with developer TimeGate Studios, is set to break new ground on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment platform from Microsoft by supporting X Server functionality, an option where players can run their own dedicated servers using a Windows®-based PC.

An X Server can handle up to 32 players at once, resulting in one of the largest multiplayer games currently available on the Xbox 360. The X server software will be distributed free of charge* upon Section 8’s launch. Meanwhile, PC gamers can also run dedicated servers for the PC version of the game allowing up to 40 simultaneous players. More information on the availability of the X Server and PC server software will be available at launch on http://www.joinsection8.com.

This added functionality is by no means necessary to enjoy the game since Section 8 also features a single player campaign and offline ‘instant action’ where artificially intelligent bots take the place of human opponents. To make sure Section 8 enters battle with all guns blazing; SouthPeak Games will host official ranked PC and X servers in locations around the world. When dedicated servers are not used, Section 8 supports up to 32 players on PC and 16 on Xbox 360.

“FPS fans looking for the perfect multiplayer game expect fast, reliable servers when they're playing online. We go one step further by offering an increased player count and boosting the game play experience to a new level,” said Richard Iggo, VP of Marketing at SouthPeak Games. “We're confident that Section 8’s incredible team-based combat and our adoption of cutting-edge server technology provide an experience unlike anything else out there.”

Section 8 is available on PC and Xbox 360 on September 1 in North America and September 4 in Europe.

I hope this doesn't catch on, the 360s meant to be a console for when you just want to play games not faff around with PCs and whatnot.

It's OK, we'd let Grim... do the faffing and we'd just play as normal.

If you want to play Counter Strike, you don't have to set up your own server, you just join an existing one. This will be great for Bezzie nights.

This is the perfect system, to my mind. The best compromise between peer-to-peer hosting and developer-hosted dedicated servers.

I suppose it would have avoided the early troubles with BF 1943. Isn't it a bit of a cop out for the developers or publishers though?

Could we upload a BeeX avatar t-shirt on it and sell them for £2?

£40/yr is the Live sub. Or is he paying that too? Also, look how much funnier jokes get when you explain them!

Golf Clap @ Doctor Glyndwr.

superb

Seriously though, all interest in this game died when Dimrill pointed out that they made two worlds.

I wonder if this game will kill the idea (like how Shadowrun killed the idea of playing against PC players).

These days I'm on quite a bit, so the only reason I don't Bezzie is because I don't have the latest Bezzie game of the week. So ner. OH, and: So's your face. (just covering all the bases)

I'm up for playing most things. I only ever seem to get invited to Rock Band/Guitar Hero, though.

Send out a CoD4 invite (par exemple) and I'll gladly join you.

I'm more of an invitee than inviter. I get worried about rejection.

Yes, almost all (or all, perhaps) EA games run on dedicated servers EA own and control.

That's it. EA run the servers so they can force people to the new versions. For example, I bet you can't play Fifa 07 online now

As far as I'm aware, they haven't turned off any servers yet.

Correct. This indicates they shut the server down 1st April 2009. However, outside of the annual refresh sports franchises, they seem to give the games a much longer lifespan -- note how old some of those titles are.

I just noticed -- the server turnoff was for FIFA 07 on the Xbox, not the Xbox 360. The only 360 game on that list is NASCAR 08.

You seem to think you know everything else. :P

I can understand them turning off the Europe servers as hardly anyone played it online before 09 came out, let alone after. The US ones less so.

I can't. We paid for the game. We paid for the live sub.

It's nothing more than EA being cunts, MS were happy to run those servers at no cost to EA.

You need to agree to EA's own online terms and conditions, ludicrously, to even view your friends' fucking times in Mirror's Edge.
