So, I'm lying in bed, waiting for the alarm to ring and I'm thinking:

"Why get up? It's nice and warm here, it's raining outside, there's nothing to do at work, so why not just stay here?"

So... what get's you out of bed? A sense of duty? A screaming child? An impending deadline? A full bladder?

A good reason, but one drawn out and ignored for as long as possible.

In the week, getting up is entirely about work. I do it kicking and screaming each day, and milk each morning for every last minute before rolling out of bed.

On the weekends, I usually wake up naturally and earlier than I do in the week. Getting up here is entirely about making the most of the day, else it's back to the week before you know it.

Also, I need natural light to wake up, much to the frustration of Miss Malabar. If I don't leave the curtains open, I get very grumpy and groggy in the mornings.

I find I can't lie in bed in the morning. When I'm up, I'm up.

When camping, however, the bladder tends to get the final say in determining whether I'm up at 5 or sometime more sensible. Getting out of the bag, getting dresed, putting boots on, and falling (usually) out of the tent is so much faff that when I'm out I'm not going back to the warm. It does get annoying when you know you fancy an extra hour.

The wife was the same, then she got a bedside light that lights up from nothing to full brightness over the course of an hour or so before the alarm. She seems to think that it helps her wake up as well as daylight does, but it could all be tosh.

There are lights that output the same sort of light, with a blue hue, to mimic natural light*. But, frankly, Miss Malabar can GTFF.


*there was a documentary hosted by Kate Silverton about it. The method of seeing if it worked or not was laughable. It amounted to her using the lamp, fully aware of the expected outcome, then telling us how she felt in the morning after use. Hoorah for science!

I could do with one of those.

The placebo effect is, of course, entirely valid. I wonder if more expensive lamps would be perceived as working better, and, hence, actually be better?

And to answer the thread question: the fact my dogs will pee on the floor if I don't get up and let them out.

Oh, another thing. My house, since about eight years ago, now backs onto a home for special children. These special children are all kinds of special. And all kinds of noisy. And weird.

The home is a good 80 metres away, but they have a huge playing yard. The kids spend a lot of time there.

If I stay in bed too long I get backache so I'm normally out of bed by 7ish, regardless of whether it's a workday or not. Lie-ins are difficult anyway as there's a lot of traffic through the street and the house I rent doesn't have double-glazing. You'd think it'd be the many ambulances (it's a main route for them) that go past, sirens blazing but it's more the cars/bikes with stupidly loud engines or thumping stereos that grate the most.

during the week it's work. on the weekends I like to sleep in. I've also spent many a saturday in bed until the late afternoon.

sundays I get up to update the Peoww most weekends.

I try to get to work as early as possible to absolutely ensure that I'll have my daily dump on paid time.

The need to piss, followed by the fact I get headaches if I stay in bed too long.

The need to work/play Xbox is also a factor.

Once I'm awake, there's only a matter of moments before she farts at my cock, so I tend to just get out as quickly as possible.

Previously, not much. After hours of arguing with myself about whether or not to get up, I'd get up. Sometimes the neighbour's dogs. Lately though, I have a housemate to wake me up, who apparently doesn't mind my cro-magnan morning social skills.

Yeah. Cold, wet mornings have returned. Did. Not. Want. To get up today. The problem with having functional heating is it makes outside feel even colder. You know why I got up? Duty. The damn bump guilted me

I always have a wee at 0645. Which is bad as I don't get up until 0715.

On weekdays, work gets me out of bed. I'm pretty bad though, I'll stay in the sack as long as I dare. Fortunately the missus has to leave much earlier for work than I do, so if I get up to see her out, which I do every day, I should always have enough time to quickly rush round and get to work.

I have my little girl over on alternating weekend days every week, and the ex insists that I pick her up from hers at 10am on that day, so I have to get up for that. With only one day left in which to have a proper lie-in, I've actually got to the stage where I end up getting out of bed at a fairly reasonable time anyway.

I can imagine what little extra time I get in bed on my weekend day off will be obliterated when we start having Zioette stay overnight in the next few weeks. She likes to get up around 6am every day.

This week I get up in the afternoons. Today I was awoken by a voicemail from my area manager.

"Hi Russell. Just calling to check where you are. Remember we organised those grievances and disciplinaries for today?"

So by the time I do get into work I'll probably be looking at a disciplinary of my own for not turning up. But still, fuck her. It's her job to do that sort of thing, not mine. If she has a go, I'll have a go back at how she keeps expecting me to keep this shop running with no proper support team.
