I've only played it for half an hour or so, but the massive shit eating grin on my face has yet to recede. If anyone's near an Asda and have twennyfoive Ithaquas to spare, get it.

I fancied this when it was released. You are further convincing me. Sold. I'll go see if my Asda has it later.

Penny Arcade made a solid argument:

It's been on my 'likely to get' list for a while. I'm just slightly put off by the talk of some utterly crap boss fights.

Well of the current batch of releases, I've only got Red Faction left to get. Hopefully that'll come down to the sub twennyfoive sweet spot soon.

What's the game like? Running around Manhattan destroying stuff and collecting things sounds Crackdowny.

It is very Crackdowny. Very much so indeed. But this time, you just run up the side of buildings like a mad thing.

Only thing that's a bit grating at the moment is the emo protagonist. "Moi woife! Moi liddle babbies! Trapped! In an 'ole! With an owl!"

Hah. For £25 you can get your money's worth, for sure. There's a fair bit of depth to your character and his abilities, but the actual game got a bit samey quite quickly. I'll go back and complete it eventually.

Good man. I have that on order with Game for the same price. Keeping my order for the reward points.

Super Mario was really samey. Mario 64 was same city. Outrun is so samey, all driving, how boring!

It's really stingy with the achievements, too. It's nowhere near as good as Crackdown, but what is?

Can I just sell you a piece of paper that says "Please turn over" on both sides every month for £25? I can do Direct debit if that's easy for you!

That seems too simple. Is there any way I could pay on a recurring subscription basis? And could you put some adverts in it? And maybe some cheat codes via premium DLC?

I picked this up today from Cex with a whopping credit note I've got from games I took off Goozex as I felt like some cathartic gaming. Also picked up Battlefield:Bad Company, Ninja Gaiden 2 and Incredible Hulk.

So I can now karate Kick helicopters, chop people's heads off, blow buildings up and smash, well pretty much everything. And that's just after a night on the crystal meth.

My "to play" pile is now enormous.

When you're not listening to the dialogue, this game is great. I can see what they've tried to do. They've tried to make Crackdown, but with a plot. Problem is that plot was written by Z-grade movie script writing bot 13. Example after a boss fight:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
*silver haired miltary man crawling away with PROTAGONIST slowly following to deliver the killing blow*
"Argh! Ooh! Oh betsy my legs! You think you've won Mercer?!"
*sneakily pulls out anti-viral injection while crawling and monologuing*
"Well I can tell you all about... PENN STATION!"
*PROTAGONIST clutches head*
"ARGH! MY PRECIOUS BRAIN!"
*PROTAGONIST falls over a bit and starts going "bluergh!"*
"HA HA! You see it is I who what am winning instead now!"
*Man injects PROTAGONIST, then turns his back on him for God knows what reason to ask for detaining Men*
Oh NOES! PROTAGONIST has dissapeareded!

FFS.

I was utterly underwhelmed by Prototype.

In Crackdown you were fairly super-powered but the game still had a bit of challenge in there. Prototype just feels like you've turned on God Mode and you can only lose by fucking up a time limit or a protection mission.

It did feel like that. In Crackdown, you had to work to upgrade your skills — a lot of the world was simply inaccessible at the beginning, but Prototype lets you climb to the top of the tallest building and safely jump off right from the off. The only things the upgrades do is make you faster, let you fly a bit longer, and overwhelm you with combat abilities you'll never remember in the heat of battle.

I was tempted to buy it at the start of this thread, but have since realised that I never actually played Crackdown and should probably just get that instead.

I can probably only afford to get it 100 times or so, is that acceptable?
Also, a real question... is there only one Crackdown game, or is there a series of them that my n00b gamer brain has missed?

There is only one. The lead programmer/designer used to work for Rockstar Games and actually helped make Lemmings and the first GTA back when they were DMA Design.

I believe they're making a sequel next year, but it's by a different developer.

Excellent. Crackdown is still one of the best games I've played on the 360. I might play it again later, in fact, ignoring the pile of unplayed games sitting on my shelves.

I never completed Crackdown and I don't know why.. It was just one of those games that I stopped playing, Like Farcry 2.. and Monkey Island.

I REALLY should go back and play this again! I loved it!
