Amazon slashes $50 from 160GB PS3 price

80GB PlayStation 3 on the outs in Japan, PS3 Slim looking all the more likely

PlayStation 3 slim listing pops up on Amazon Germany

How cheap would a PS3 have to get to tempt you?

When they're cheap I'll crumble. I fancy a BillyRay player, and The Last Guardian can't be far off.

If the last remaining companies give me my ipoints, I should be able to get one for nowt. That's about how cheap it'd have to be.

That Amazon Germany one was a fake, according to Kotaku's update on it.

For reference, on Amazon right now, you can get an 80Gb PS3 with pack-in copies of Terminator Salvation (game) and Terminator 3 (bluray) with an extra free game (Far Cry 2, Oblivion, or inFamous) for £280. Play do a PS3+Killzone2 for £290. The Amazon US price cut represents a 10% drop, so probably puts the console at £250.

I personally doubt we'll get a slim yet. I think an official price cut is much more likely.

Currently I've still no desire to get one as I'm more than happy with my 360 and Wii. I don't think I'd even buy one if it was stupidly cheap at £50 just because I need to save on space.

I see no hole in my life that a PS3 would fill, so I pretty much would never consider buying one regardless of price.

I don't really play my wii or my 360 that much as it is, so there would be no point in me getting a PS3 at all at the moment or in the near future.

I would quite like a bluray player, although it's take a bit of messing about as currently my telly has something plugged into both HDMI sockets, the single componenet and the single VGA. I'd probably just try and get a new telly that is maybe a bit bigger and does full 1080p and has more sockets and stuff nearer the time.

Indeed. The PS3 finally has a reasonable crop of decent exclusive games -- Uncharted, Ratchet&Clank, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and LittleBigPlanet are all worthwhile titles. Still lagging behind the 360, of course, unless you want a Bluray player anyway which changes the cost/value equation considerably.

Rumourmill is still rumbling:

Sony doubles PS3 production, fuelling price drop speculation:
Quote:
The news follows the revelation PlayStation 3 manufacturing costs have dropped 70 per cent since the console was first launched - a figure confirmed by Sony Corp CEO and executive vice president Nobuyuki Oneda during an investor call late last week.
Looks likely that we are going to have something announced at Leipzig later this month. I'm surprised they've made it that much cheaper to manufacture; given that price is killing them in the marketplace I'm surprised we haven't seen a price cut already. Perhaps we're going to get a generous cut, bringing it down to £200 or something?

£199 (with a couple of pack-ins) is pretty much my sweet spot for the PS3, especially if it's a slim version and not the current bread-bin design.

Of those, only LittleBigPlanet would be a must-have for me.

Agree, disagree, agree, not played, disagree.
Lord, LBP was bad. Even for a platform game.

I don't see it as a platform game, more as tools to arse about with. I may have overestimated how good that bit is, but there's a bloke at work here who raved about it.

70% saving on a dollars-grand, or whatever insane BOM it was when the first one, with then-rare blue laser, rolled off the line.

Nah. I really liked LBP. Having people to play it with always helps though.
R&C:ToD was pretty damn awesome too.

$805.85, was the analyst estimate at the time, for whatever it means. Only Sony know for sure of course, and they would want to spin the 70% upwards to suggest they are doing a good job.

That would suggest £150 cost of manufacture today, meaning I suppose £200 would be selling at somewhere around break-even. Not too shabby; coming into Christmas at that price point would be a shot in the arm for the platform.

WH Smiths were flogging either the 40 or 60gb version last week for 200 to "make room for future Sony products". Make of that what you will.

I thought LBP was pretty rubbish. It's cool seeing all of the levels people with more time than me have made, but actually playing it is a fucking chore. It also feels as though you aren't accomplishing anything by playing it. It feels really pointless for some reason.

Pretty much this, though I don't have a Wii. But yeah - I love my 360, DS, etc, and have no space for anything else and don't desire it anyway. All games I'm personally interested in, now and in the future, will be on the 360 (unless say FIFA becomes a PS3 exclusive, which obviously won't ever happen), so a PS3 holds no appeal to me.

I do want to get into blu-ray in time, but will get a proper player for that.

:this:
It's pretty, and they've put plenty of work into the, I can't think of the right word, polish? Stephen Fry doing the voices and whatnot.
But the actual game mechanics are a bit shonky. It is fun with more people, though.

Yeah, it's lovely and shiny, but I just can't help but fall asleep after five minutes of play. And the singleplayer campaign which consists of levels by Media Molecule is infuriating to say the least. The controls are fucking rubbish - it just doesn't work properly in the way that pretty much every 2D platformer ever has. It's difficult to explain without actually playing it yourself. It also makes me question the point of the awesome creation tool if playing the levels is so difficult and irritating. It's like tacking an amazing and intuitive level editor onto that Watchmen game or something. Sure, it's easy to make cool stuff, but does anyone want to actually bother playing it?
