Exactly. Ironically, even though it is on Steam weekend special right not, it is cheaper to buy it from Direct2Drive and just plug the serial number into Steam. As you say, it is even cheaper still to buy the retail version from Play.com.

Enormous update coming. Steam users can get this now by telling their Steam client to use beta versions.

Edit -- no, actually, I think it's live and properly released in fact.

Played through the first 8 or 9 missions with Dave in Co-op tonight. Much easier than having to split your attention in single player :S Choppy voice chat issues under Windows, though.

Was wondering, given that I bought it about 3 hours ago.

IN THE GRIM DARKNESS OF THE FAR FUTURE, THERE IS ONLY A MASSIVE PATCH TO BE DOWNLOADED THE MOMENT THE GAME'S INSTALLED.

Is this out for the 360 or did I notice Dimmers playing via Live on PC or something?

I heard this has no base building (which is a good thing)? I'm actually quite tempted by it...

It's on the PC with Games for Windows Live. It can't just be me that finds the Xbox 360 noises odd coming from their PC.

Dave - do you have 'keep this game up to date' turned on in Steam?

Aye. I guess it updated without me noticing, as it's certainly there.

No. I still do a double-take when the buh-dunk "friend online" noise plays.

There's a sound for that? I must have instinctively turned it off as soon as I got my 360.

Try doing only ten or so at a time. I think there's too many people on there now.

How annoying, I can receive messages on micosoft live, but can't sent any.

Why would I want to by Live Gold, when #

1) I don't own an xbox....
2) I needed to set an account up to play DOW 2 on a PC..

I am confused now!!

Indeed, you don't need a gold account for sending messages. Indeed, having a silver account should have no effect unless you have an xbox. Sounds like something else has gone wrong rather than that.

It said...

Quote:
You must be an Xbox Live Gold member to send messages.

Other great reasons to go for the Gold:

Great online multiplayer gameplay
Exclusive Xbox Live Marketplace downloads and content
Revolutionary TrueSkill™ matchmaking
Enhanced gamer feedback
Enhanced friends list management

But... I've received numerous messages with my old housemate who's only on silver.
Also, Messages have always been free.
Also, I just created a silver account, and sent a message to my main account, and it worked fine. (Done entirely from DoW/IE)

How did you go about sending the message?

I'm fairly sure you need a gold account to sent messages from http://live.xbox.com, as opposed to within the Xbox or GfWL interfaces. Were you on the website, Kovacs?

Then we live in an idiotic world were the (free to visit) website won't allow you to send messages (from your free account), but if you load DoW2 you can use the in-game GfWL interface and send them anyway. Which is retarded market segmentation bullshit, but there it is.

Can you load a GfWL client outside of a game? Do I remember it having some standalone EXE so you could look at your friends list? If so, I wonder if you can send messages in there too? And I further wonder if you can download that on its own without first installing a GfWL game? Because that'd be super double mega retarded if so.

There's a standalone thing, but I didn't see a games list on it.

On the other hand, I have made my own stand alone app, which does.

What complete dunce decided not to let you save mid-mission? Battles can go on for over an hour for fucking fuck's sake. Or at least, they do when I'm doing them.

This game is dangerously moreish.

I've had that mission open for a while now. I'm scared of it. Only another 1000XP until my Commander is level 20, and then I might give it a go. Don't know who I want to take with him though.

Run Install Program -> Download and install Steam -> Create Steam Account -> Install game -> Login to Windows Live, or create an account -> Can I play my game yet?

Christ, PC gaming can be tedious.

Yes. By requiring two separate entire systems (Steam and GfWL), both of which have to be up to date, DoW2 is particularly tiresome on a machine which has neither.

I hope this is worth it.

Stuck on "Preparing to launch Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II" at the moment — I hope it runs!

edit: ah, I think it's trying to update.

I have yet to need it. Although Co-op may perhaps not count as multiplayer.

It's a sort of tedium I feel I can understand and, to a limited extend, address though. If performance sucks or a game crashes, I can get new drivers and look for patches. Whereas when console games don't work (consider BF1943's matchmaking issues), all I can do is suck it up.

The game crashes during the opening intro, which is unskippable. I think I should try updating my graphics driver. Failing that, renaming the Movies folder works.

But then, saying that, I ran the performance test within the game, and the only thing it displayed was the map and a load of unit icons on a black screen. I think I should try updating my graphics driver.

also: no Windowed display mode?
