So, when people ask me "What's your favourite movie, Dav, you handsome devil?" I am unable to answer, due to my unconditional love of all things film.

However, an easier question to answer is "What's your favourite PART of a movie?" where you can pick out certain moments from films that make you smile, scream or cry.

I like tense courtroom stuff. The part of 'A Few Good Men' when Cruise badgers Nicholson into breaking and shouting 'YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!" and proceeds to rant about national security, all the while digging a big hole for himself still makes my pulse raise, and I've seen it a dozen times.

Or how about the moment in 'The Matrix' where Neo decides to stop running from the Agents, but stand and fight?

The part of 'Aliens' when they realise that the Xenomorphs are coming UNDER THE FLOOR!

There are many. Please share your faves.

p.s. Games too :)

You might want to put 'CONTAINS SPOILERS' somewhere in the title, because I expect that explaining our favourite bits of films might give away some of the plot.

Which part's that, then?

The end of Escape From New York.

The poster reveal in The Shawshank Redemption.

Anything with Brick Tamland in Anchorman.

The cinema scene in Gremlins.

Meeting the alien for the first time in Explorers. The punchline is immense.

Sneakers - the "Posit: Consequence" scene with Ben Kingsley and Robert Redford, set in the Cray.

The reveal at the end of Arlington Road numbed the entire cinema.

Games

The moment I twigged the Terminator 2 homage in GTA:San Andreas. I actually paused the game and laughed myself silly for a while, because I just hadn't spotted that the entire mission was based on that T2 sequence.

Sniper Wolf's death scene in MGS. Yes, yes, childish script etc etc, but dying there, the wolves howling and the snow blowing about the place. Probably the only time that Kojima actually got close to the desired effect.

The end of Portal.

How about 28 days later, when Jim thinks he's utterly alone in London, wanders into a church and shouts, and a few heads pop up out of the crowd below? The mood changes from bleak apocalypse, to tense survival horror in a flash.

Dr Strangelove, so many bits of it but:
Quote:
General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?
General Jack D. Ripper: Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.
General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence.

To be fair all of that film is amazing.
That opening with the just emptiness of london, utterly fantastic.

The bit in dodgeball when Patches is teaching them to play Dodgeball

- The train journey opening sequence of Get Carter.

- The "It can't be!" "What did you do Ray?" bit of Ghostbusters.

... and for ultimate sadness, the bit where Spock dies at the end of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan always really chokes me up. :S

That bit always annoys me, because I can't work out how the hell Andy was supposed to affix the poster to the wall with blutack after he'd got into the tunnel.

The death of T-Bird in The Crow. "I know you... I know you... but you can't be you, we killed you, there ain't no coming back... this is the really real world, there ain't no coming back..."

William H. Macy's "I have so much love to give" scene in Magnolia.

The climactic basketball game in Teen Wolf.

The music-shop scene in Once. And the scene in the recording studio where the engineer is chatting on the phone only half-interested in what's going on as the band starts to play, then the song kicks in and he goes silent for a few seconds - "I'll have to call you back." And the scene where he plays the tape for his dad.

The whole last five minutes of the original The Longest Yard. "We've come too far together to stop now. For Granny. For Nate. For Caretaker. Let's do it!"

The crowd singing The Marseilleuse after the penalty award in Escape To Victory.

Reminds me of his moment in Boogie Nights when Little Bill finally loses it. Always shocking.

Heh, "Ah man, I shot Marvin in face!" is always a good moment too.

And, of course, the Marseille scene in 'Casablanca'. Gets me every time.

Other favourites:

The long shot at the end of the 'Third Man': an unexpected, but appropriate, ending

The scene in 'Nosferatu' where he appears perched on his coffin in the ship's hold. This haunts me terribly.

The tension in the woods before Pickett's Charge in 'Gettysburg'.

The 'Good Morning' in 'Singin' in the rain'. In a film filled with joy (except for the unwanted broadway medley bit), this is the highlight.

The hotline scene in 'Dr Strangelove'

Probably soem more that I've forgotten about but will remember when I hit 'submit'

The whole "you've got the touch" song scene in the original Transformers movie, expecially when Optimus Prime boosts himself into the air taking down decepticons.

The "Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?" from Goodfellas.

"We're gonna need a bigger boat" from Jaws, also the drunk scene on the boat where they are comparing scars.

I am an idiot.

The moment in Rocky where in the final round Apollo knocks him down, and Mickey's screaming at him to stay on the canvas and not put himself through any more punishment but instead Rocky uses the ropes to somehow get unsteadily back to his feet. Creed's shoulders drop and he looks away for a split-second in total disbelief, his whole body saying "what the fuck do I have to do to put this guy away?" It's the whole film, the whole series, in less than a minute of screen-time and it gives me the chills every time I see it.

Also: the reprise of the running-through-Philadelphia scene in Rocky 2 where he's joined by all the neighbourhood children.

Also: the exchange between Clubber Lang and Rocky at the start of their second fight ("I'm gonna bust you up." / "Go for it").

Also: the scene in Almost Famous where Penny finds out that Russell has traded her to another band. I know it's hard to believe if you've only seen her in anything else she's ever done in her entire career, but Kate Hudson is unutterably sensational in that film.

Also: Inigo vs. the six-fingered man in The Princess Bride.

Also: The Prisoner's Dilemma scene from The Dark Knight.

Oh god, that whole film. The music shop scene, and the bit where he asks if she loves her husband, and she replies in Czech so he doesn't know what she says. And the ending. That film is utterly perfect - the best romantic film there's ever been. It's utterly heartbreaking.

Also, Robert De Niro's appearance in Stardust. Whoever came up with that bit of casting deserves a trophy.

The moment where Amin turns on Nicolas in the Last King of Scotland.

The bit in House of Sand and Fog when
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Ben Kingsley comes out to shout at the woman who's been wrecking his life, finds her about to kill herself, and takes her inside to look after her. The whole scene is good, but the explanation he gives to his son makes me blub like a little girl. See also his talk to his son after he hits his wife. "Last night you learned how not to be a man." Sob.

Kleinfeld's last scene in Carlito's Way. And the whole of the last half hour or so. I know the whole thing inside out, but that chase still makes me ridiculously tense every time.

The ending of Kill Bill. The last conversation between Bill and the Bride in Kill Bill part 2:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I don't know. Because I'm a bad person."

"No... you're not a bad person. You're a terrific person. In fact, you're my favourite person. But every now and then, you can be a real cunt."

Whoever wrote those lines knows more about love than just about everyone in hollywood.

The 'panicky idiot' scene in Night of the Living Dead. Harry is the best horror character ever. And the ending, also. The best ending to a horror film ever.
