Has anyone seen this site?

http://www.118800.co.uk

It's a national mobile directory service apparently.. You call up with the name of the person you're looking for and it'll give you their mobile number.

You can be added to their ex directory service (which seems like a pain to do to be honest. We've had a FAQ sent round at work)

So.. does anyone trust them? I don't. I might try and see if I can find myself on there before I go through their removal process. That process involves giving them your mobile number for them to text you a code which you put in their site.

I just don't trust it!

EDIT:- It seems like the site isn't working now. I'll look again later.

I debunked this bollocks when Dudley was spewing it. 'Course I'm in his killfile so I'm sure he's still merrily blathering it all over the Internet.

Say I look Grim... up on the system. It doesn't give me Grim...'s number. It sends Grim... an SMS with my number in, saying "hey, Richard on <number> is trying to contact you." It's up to Grim... whether he calls me or not. This is a good deal less offensive to my eyes.

It's still crummy how they obtained their data, but let's criticise them for what they are doing rather than what all the dumbass Internet sheeple are imagining they are doing.

Is it actually evil? I mean, at a quid a go, who's going to use it apart from actual people who are wanting to reach me on my mobile, and haven't got the number?

edit: oh, apparently not. Right, carry on.

I don't think so, no. It's slightly shady how they got their data -- it seems they bought a number of databases compiled from people who forgot to tick a "do not pass my details to third parties" box on various data collection forms -- but the Information Commissioner has confirmed it's legal so that's that really.

That IS a great deal less offensive! Makes sense now I guess. I'm still going to try it and see if it can find me.

So, they'll have a list of phone numbers, automatically sorted into gullible internet dumbasses and reasonable, pragmatic internet cool blokes*?

Clever.

* This list obviously only contains A Craster, 1 Badger Mansions

There is no-one, no-one in this world who would want to contact me that doesn't already have at least my mobile number or email address, neither of which have changed in a decade.

They've got a third list of numbers of inconsistent welsh flip-floppers, too.

Someone forwarded this round the office yesterday, including a link to the BBC story which tells you how it works. Nng.

I don't think he's talking to me any more, after replying almost word for word what Gaywood said up thar to everyone on the To list.
