However I do remember that i'm way over the average age on here and he was taken off the telly a long time ago :-(

Why is the only picture of Benny from Crossroads on the internet, one I screen capped myself? I have no idea why it has spread so far. It even has the UK Gold logo hand touched out!

Poor Paul Henry. He was a properly trained stage actor who took on the role of Benny initially just for 6 weeks. He was tipped for great things and in fact Ronnie Barker had pressed for him to be Godber in Porridge (the produced overruled him). He's already done series such as The Sweeney. Benny pretty much killed an serious acting ambitions he had, and Ronnie Barker wasn't the only person who thought highly of him. But in an age of 3 TV channels, if you got typecast as a character you'd then struggle. Even Tom Baker found TV work hard to come by after he left Doctor Who.

On the upside he ended up as the UK's top paid TV star and only ever worked 6 months of the year on Crossroads. So life wasn't bad and you can see why he stayed on the series so long.

Well true, but money isn't everything. You do well for yourself but all your peers look down on you and you never reach the pinnacle of your profession. You might never get the kind of roles you really want.

Gareth Thomas from Blakes 7 left that series because he was trained at the RSC and his mates kept on taking the piss and scaring him that nobody would employ him.

Acting is a funny business. It's only recently actors have really be able to mix and match roles easily.
