My cousin has just scrapped his car, and got money off a new Fiat 500. So hurrah, the scheme is working well.

However, the new car was purchased in Italy. What the Hell? I (perhaps stupidly) assumed the car had to be bought in the UK? Otherwise, what the fuck is the point?

God knows, unless this scheme is sort of Europe-wide or something.

It gets a 10 year old car off the UK's roads.

But it gets foreign cars in, taking our jobs and wives!

Ah - sorry, I thought you meant that the car he scrapped was bought in Italy, not the new one.

I suppose it gives work to UK scrapyards.

The point is to support the UK's proud and dedicated car salesmen in their hour of need.

We don't make things any more Grim...

Yes, I'm aware of that (except sportscars). But it's still money into the British Economy (or not, in this case).

Fiat's an Italian company and makes 500s there though - so long as the dealer gets its cut, the money would go to Italy irrespective of where it was "purchased". Although VAT, maybe, actually. Never mind me, I'm just typing faster than my brain is going, as usual.

Just so long as the steering wheel is in the right and proper place.

I find it pretty easy to change hands with either, although there's a while when you just keep smacking your hand into the door.

Yeah, I spent the first couple of days in Italy last year smashing holes in the door card of our hire car, fine after that. It's quite a natural change, but then I'm fine swapping between manual and auto cars too. Cyprus was fun last week, I forgot my licence so Charl had to drive, and kept driving to balance the brake and gas like you would a clutch in a manual.

No problem there, that's how the locals drive too.

My sister was very brave for renting a car in Dublin. Driving in a city where you've never been and where its very hard to park. But she adapted really quick. There was just one occasion that she entered a street the wrong way, but the driver in front of us was very patient.

For some reason every time I glance at this thread I get the "we buy any car" song in my head.
