Because the airport weighs your cases. If they're heavier on the way home they sent you to customs. When you open the case and it's full of brand new american things they give you a nice bill as my mate once found out.

If you can get the weight within a couple of kilos the alarm bells dont go off.

It's repairable yeah. It needs to be perfect though because my green one has a 1 inch scratch and that's a lot of the reason why I got this case because it was listed as "new".

It isn't, it has bits in it from a strip out (IDE cables, motherboard posts in, etc).

It needs parts tbh, I'm not interested in using it with bad panel gap and cracks. It also doesnt have the advertised electronic lighting card either. The lighting is Rev 1, my green one has rev 4. So I can't even use the spares from one to the other as they have changed. It's also missing two LED link wires so half the case lights won't work.

Now granted I can make the wires, but for £145 my solder iron is staying put. For £45 however? sure, I'll ghetto rig the balls out of it to get the lights working.

The repair will cost me north of $150 for the parts. I could wait til October and get them for $99 only, but still that's alot of agg.

Hmm. Do they? I've seen the records airlines keep on you when you fly; nothing about weight disparities in there. They don't even necessarily know for sure that this J Smith born 1/1/1960 flying LON-NYC is the same as the J Smight born 1/1/1960 who flew NYC-LON last month; for example, if people fly on different carriers on different legs.

We didn't get stopped and we brought back four more cases from the US than we took out.

My friend flew with BA. There's a limit on case weight. He went out with a pretty much empty case (few tshirts to use as packing) and when he returned home with 2 4000w competition amplifiers in there ($3000 a go Soundstream tarantulas) they stopped him in customs and told him his cases had become 22 kilos over the weight when he left the UK. They opened them and he got a nice bill for the tax. Thankfully however they were open, so he managed to convince customs that he had only paid $600 a piece, but it still cost him a couple of hundred quid IIRC.

I could be wrong, he could be talking shit. Thinking about it it could possibly be because his suitcases were over weight. But then if you do that they literally make you take stuff out there and then (they did to me, I had to take records out of one case and let my brother take them home).

I don't know then. As I say, that might have been all hot air from customs trying to put the wind up him (or at least using it as a reason to search his cases).

IIRC you get two main cases in your allowance and one carry on.

Or he might have been picked up on a routine check; young man, travelling alone, with two heavy cases would attract attention from customs. It's certainly right that customs officers will charge you tax on stuff like that if you get caught; that's why you throw away the boxes in the US, and you hide the receipts well. I don't think it's done off case weights though.

Varies from airline to airline. They will each have rules about weight, size, and number of pieces of luggage.

They are bullshitting.

I've been stopped every time I travelled alone, and never when travelling with my wife. Coming back from the US, they are on the lookout for young men travelling alone.*

Quite why they bother, and ignore the 747 from Orlando full of families dressed from head to toe in brand new Disney wear, I'll never know.

So is mine, that's why I refused. However, if he makes a refund and I carry on the dispute I could theoretically take it twice.

Ive mailed him my paypal addy and noted in the dispute that I agree to end the dispute forthwith upon a refund. So he has it in black and white.

Yeah it seems so. TBH? it would cost about £60 to get it back to Ireland.

I can't use their courier because they're account trade only.

Seriously what's the point in paying to get back a busted computer case? I can't see them being able to do much with it. Not unless they sell it as is and they'll possibly make £50 (without paying the return shipping).

As I mentioned this isn't an isolated case (pardon the pun) it's happened 7 times in one day. Only one arrived intact out of 8.

I think it also helps that they had 6 systems (full, like Nemmie and mine's) for sale and two of my mates have brought the I7 units (£599, cheap as they're worth £1308+ £65 s&h from Alienware) so I don't think they would want those orders cancelled :D

You're probably right tbh. I got stopped by customs the first time I ever went to the USA and they said it was because of how I looked. Six hours I was there. Imagine the look on his face when he tipped my cases over the floor only to reveal about 200 condoms (my cousin Pijjin was gutting a pub and gave me the contents of the wall mounted machine).

He looked at me, I said "Well, better to be safe that sorry, eh?" and he busted up laughing. Which was good, because before that he was being a fucking asshole truth be told. Threatening me this, telling me the prison sentences for carrying drugs ETC.

I admit I was sweaty. But then I got on a plane in London and it was 49f. Got off in Phila and it was 92f and I was wearing a army puffer jacket thing. Not only that but because of my Autism I'm absolutely terrified of flying and after white knuckling the chair arms for 8 hours I was as white as a ghost.

Never did fly again after that, thank fuck, I reakon it would have finished me off :D

Thanks Zardoz I appreciate that mate :)

I've explained to the seller now (sent another email a mo ago) explaining why I won't remove the dispute until I see the cash, so if I don't have a refund by friday I'll escalate it into a full claim.

Do that. It is their problem, not yours. Make sure you give that great weight.

Also: I got stopped by US customs in Boston. My luggage being a black holdall with a shitty small lock. The man asked "is there anything that I should know about in there?" as I could not find the keys to open the shitty lock. I looked at him and said "I really wish I could say 'yes' to that question as then you would cut the bag open and I could get into it, and show you that there isn't and buy a new bag without the lock that my parents gave me, without the keys".

It was fine after that, as they let me go. I did have to buy a new bag though.

Superglue. Yup. All of the clips can be super glued. I'll glue the cracked panel too.

As luck would have it I ordered one of these the other day

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0451126748

To put on my monitor. But it will cover that crack perfectly. All I need to do then is a couple of other small bits and bobs and the hinge pin. Don't know whether I can replace the hinge pin but I can get an entire panel (front one) for £30. Would rather not pay £30 of course but I suppose if I have to..

I got the glue out. And the plastic weld. And a coat hanger.

First job, cut some coat hanger, which miraculously was the exact same thickness as the missing hinge pole lmao.

knurled the ends with some pliers and a hammer, press fitted and...

Image

LOL. Good times.

I then discovered why these cases are so expensive. My Alienware I have now is steel on the inside. This is anodized (not powdercoated as I suspected) Aluminium. So I stipped off all the plastic panels, plastic weld and superglued all the broken clips and then bent the metal inner chassis back (think Lian Li) and.......

Tadaaaaaa

Image

Image

So pleased was I that I ordered one of these.

Image

It's an everything, basically :D

Tells you the time, date, weather, news, links to MSN to display your messages if you're gaming, tells you what youre watching, listening to, the type of file, what your hard drive is doing. etc etc. Also has a remote and hooks through the ATX plug so you can turn the PC on, off, standby, restart etc all with the remote.

Fucking fucksticks.

Camera was due today. No sign. Tomorrow I have to be in Bournemouth late afternoon.

Office (delivery location) is 1 hour from home. I don't want to have to come in tomorrow when it will inevitably turn up.

What to do? Can I wait until Friday? Grrrrr!

£64 delivered. It's silverstone so it's 100% alu. It's called a smart device, basically a computer within your computer.

Here's what it does. An awful fucking lot lmao.

Image

And that's without custom apps made for it. IIRC the retail was about £200 when they first came along. I was going to order a Pertillian because my buddy in the US keeps missing me (damn addictive fucking computer games !) but this thing catches the messages and displays them on the screen. Hotkey to chat back hehe.

http://www.afterhours.co.uk/silverstone ... ce=froogle

Postage was £4 reggyed.

Edit. And it comes with it's own media center too. Which is good, 'cos I'm running Vista Basic now which doesn't have one. I have a tv dongle too. Yay :)

That's what sucks about living in the lovely open (and remote) parts of the UK Chinny. It's the same for me mate. If I'm out and I miss the posty I'm screwed. I have to wait another 2 days, pay 50p and trot into the local village (they deliver to my P.O for 50p, I think that it's that bird out of Adrian Mole yet they don't ask for any grapes :nerd: ) to get it.

Ah, but this is for my office which is an hour from home and in town. I've got to the bottom of it now.

Spoke to the supplier. Good news is that the camera was only sent today due to a small delay and they've sent it Royal Mail Special and not TNT. So will be with me before 1pm tomorrow.

Which is good as I need to leave for Bournemouth by 2pm. So with any luck it will arrive early, I can jump in the car, take it home (halfway to Bournemouth) and then go and SELL SELL SELL.

Huzzah! Possibly.

That's the worst thing in the world ever. I was up at the crack of dawn for the first week and a half of ordering the case. And it didn't come :(

It sucks, because as much as you want to be really excited you have to contain it just incase. After two weeks I knew that the case was going to go horribly wrong. What I didn't know was I would be rewarded for my patience and lack of sleep :)

Karma, I'm a firm believer in it :)

The black one is a class act man. Especially with all that chrome. I'm just not looking forward to keeping it clean lol.

I have also completely fallen for it after finding out it's Alu. Not that it will make any difference really because it's inside, but it is apparently better for cooling. It's still very heavy though heh.

I'm chuffed now tbh. I've wanted an ALX since 2004 when they first came out (were different then, but still equally as shiny and pretty) and yesterday I was absolutely heartbroken. It wasn't until today that I realised I could fix it because tbh? I saw it smashed, my heart sank and I didn't even touch it. I didn't want to go near it, post natal depression lol. I left the packing all over the floor. Couldn't throw any of it away because I was expecting to send it back.

Once they gave the refund I was relieved but still really bummed.. Was only when I started to fix things that I realised it was going to be almost perfect and has cost me nothing. I even got away with paying my friend on the Alienware forum £15 for a hinge assembly :)

Next item needed before mission... water cooling...

Devilman, check this out !

http://www.dreamwarecomputers.com/revie ... /index.htm

This allows you to set dates and times for your computer to sleep, trigger an alarm, turn off or turn on at. Yep, you can set a time to turn your computer ON, something that isn't possible without a device like this! Remember how I mentioned the MFP51 goes across your ATX power supply line so it gets a constant supply of power? This way, even when your computer is off the device can still run a clock and since it's wired across your motherboard's power switch connections, when that clock reaches a certain time it can physically turn your computer on. Here's where I started to see more non-media uses for this device.
Say you do a lot of work at home, or even have a home business run from your computer. In the past you may have just left this computer always running so you could hop on it and work at any time. But of course leaving a computer running 24/7 will only wear out certain devices faster (like hard drive life spans or critical cooling fans). Picture this, at the end of every day, we'll say midnight, your computer automatically powers itself off. Remaining off for however many hours you sleep. When you wake up and go into the office, your computer is already powered up and ready for the work day ahead

How practical is the display still you ask? While you sit at your desk working you can have all your email accounts automatically checked at whatever time interval you set with their statistics up on the LCD. Now you don't need to keep your email software open non-stop and can free up some memory.

ARGH. Roll on tomorrow or Friday :D

My Mac Pro is always on so I can log into it from wherever whenever I want. That way it's already downloaded any large attachments and I can do stuff over VNC.

I assume at the price it cost it is more than equipped for this task.

What task? Consuming huge amounts of power? Aye.

Rubbish. I used a Dell that I got in 1996 (ish) to turn itself on in the morning and act as an alarm clock. It's been a BIOS feature for aaaaages.

Obviously, I still need the useless devicetm.

To be fair, the BIOS is usually quite limited in that regard -- just turning on at a fixed time on fixed days, that I've seen. This doodad is presumably a bit more flexible (8:30am on Mon-Thu, 9am on Friday, and 10am on weekends please).

Although that's still not life-changingly important!

Again, nothing you can't do with sleep/suspend.

I sued to work for ( A delivery company - Ed). Lobbing parcels about was aprt of teh job, as unloading the lorry, sorting parcels and laoding them in the van was a task that we were pressed for time for. Unloading the vans and loading the lorry doubly so.

That reminds me.. Just checked my security cam and from 10 minutes ago there's about 40 jpegs captured of the DHL man collecting my parcel from at home and re-arranging the contents of the van to make it fit.
