So Dreamhost are doing this deal for the rest of the day.

Basically it's something stupid like 92% off for a year for new customers, so if I sign up for a year's hosting it costs me $10 bucks and I get Unlimited* hosting and bandwith. And everything i think I need for a wordpress blog with benefits.

I'm pretty certain I can cancel after a year, but even so about $120 a year for that doesn't seem too bad. Especially as I plan to use more features as time passes.

* sure to actually mean 'a bit'

I know Jonarob uses them for SnappyGamer, but I thought I would ask you brainacs.

I use them for my site, and they're alright when they're not completely fucking up their billing and putting through millions in fraudulent credit card transactions.

I'm not going to be renewing though - their control panel is shit, their servers are slow, they seem to put being funny before being professional, and their "unlimited" space and usage is not unlimited at all.

No. They're not good.

Don't trust them.

Oooh, thats not good.

But $10 for a year of being crap, and then moving to someone better has got to be worth a shot.

At worst I can just go somewhere else before the year is up, and put the 2 pints down to learning experience.

It's paid via paypal too, so I feel a bit more secure in that they won't know my actual card details directly.

Hmm.

Yeah, but it's not (usually) a simple task to move a website from one host to another. This is why mrdictionary.net (and objection, with its stupid 2gb database) is still on dreamhost. I can't bring myself to upload my photography stuff to their shitty slow servers, and then have to move them again later.

It might be a simpler task if it were a cPanel<->cPanel transfer, thinking of subdomains, mail, etc. In this case, you'd be using the blasted Dreamhost panel... :/

And their newsletters inspire contempt, not confidence.

If you were to go with Dreamhost, don't use their domain registration. I'd recommend keeping hosting and domain registration seperate in any situation, but Dreamhost doubly so.

Ah, yeah, that could be an issue. I assumed you would get shell access and could just download everything. I suspect this will be the first of many wrong assumptions...

Hmm.

Well, for £6 I'll give them a play and see what they are like. Cos £6 to work out what I hate in a webhost isn't too bad. I get a free registration of a website url, which I plan to use to play with, whilst I teach myself how to do all I need to do, but long term I would still be using Skeptobot.

Cheers.

I get shell access, but that's no guarantee that you will.

"Are these people any good?"
"No."
"No."
"Hmm. Well, they're really cheap for a year, so I could just change afterwards."
"Actually, that will be pretty difficult."
"I'm going to give them a try!"

DreamHost, a recurring epic in ∞ parts.

To be fair I'm also taking into accounts opinions not solely from this place. Though I'm sure these opinions are the most accurate. :)

EDIT: I basically decided that if I paid £6 now then I can start playing with wordpress and learning all the things I need to start improving Skeptobot.

I'll probably get Canaca or whatever they are called when I've actually gotten to grips with things. But I really don't want to be paying a monthly fee at the moment so I haven't been getting anything, and thus not learning anything, and I want to get playing.

I've never had any billing problems, but then I'm paid up for two years. I've had a bit of downtime (a couple of days for a couple of hours), but they responded quickly to my support tickets on both occasions (considering they're in the US), and everything was fine. Also, I get a shit load of bandwidth/space for relatively fuck all (about £4 a month on my two year plan and some sort of special offer I got at the time). I don't mind their control panel, either. It's certainly no worse than other hosts of their ilk - and I would know because I spend a lot of my work time setting up various "websites" on lots of different web hosts for super secret purposes I can't go into.

The Triforce site (and subsiduaries) are on Dreamhost. It's often slow and occasionally doesn't work but the support team are nice I hear. You can't get webspace from them for $10 though can you? That's just a domain.

You definitely can, I did. DreamHost sometimes offers this offer to new users.

Existing DH users can create vouchers for new users, also. You get $97 of 'allowance', and can create your offers that split that allowance toward your own 'commision', and the discount.

For example, if anybody here really wanted one, I could make a coupon that gets you $47 off your first DH bill when you use it while I receive $50. I could also make one that gets you $97 off (leaving you with a years hosting bill of about $20), while I get nothing.

In fact, I'll do just that in case anybody really wants it. Use the code DESPERATION while signing up for a years DH and you get the full $97 off.

I just got a message saying that some fellow has signed up using my promo code. O_o

It also says that they signed up for monthly billing, not yearly, so they didn't get the full discount. :(

I just used it but signed up for yearly billing I thought. At least. It told me I got full discount anyway. I thought it a handy way to store mp3s for use with Blip.fm.

EDIT: Actually it looks like I did sign up for monthly by accident. Bah. They had a silly confusing sign up page. Probably deliberately.

EDIT 2: Actually it looks like I did sign up for yearly. "$119.40 yearly ($9.95 per month)"

No. I registered jhenge.com presumably with a Nirejhenge username.

It's probably not you then. I guess some other folk must have found the code in a search.
