Space trading game Eve Online has suffered a virtual version of the credit crunch.

One of the game's biggest financial institutions lost a significant chunk of its deposits as a huge theft started a run on the bank.

One of the bank's controllers stole about 200bn kredits and swapped them for real world cash of £3,115.

As news of the theft spread, many of the bank's customers rushed to remove their virtual cash.

Apart from using "bunch", for which beating to death is the standard penalty, does what this manchild describe amount to a crime in the real world which has no faires, goblins or mining asteroids?

No, no real world crime. CCP retain ownership of all game assets and stuff, so no real theft has taken place. Ebaying it I dunno, maybe some terms of the contract with CCP have been broken. Someone just spent 3.5 on in g ame cash that is seriously hot and will be removed. I think this happened last month something.

Selling it for real wonga is against the Ts&Cs, and he got banned for it. The theft itself is perfectly legitimate though.

I think there's precedent - it was a thing to do with "land" in Second Life, and the judge said it wasn't real theft.

It's a tricky one, to be sure.

Man has been banned from SpacePixieLand, btw.

Does EvE allow crafting? I could make a fortune making SpaceMatresses for to keep all your LeccyPennies in!

I'm almost positive you're not allowed to buy game money with real money.

From the SpaceBank of Kriss Kross. They also make the hyperspace engines on the ships. Kriss Kross will make you jump jump.

Pah - it's Icelandic Krona, because the game was made in Iceland. Some CCP geek panicked when the game got popular and made that up.

Someone actually stumped up three grand plus for something that is virtual and presumably can't even be used anyway in the actual game in question? :nerd:

Incredible.

Easy. At one point, Everquest gold was trading at a higher rate per dollar than the Italian Lira.

And no, he probably sold it in chunks.

You can buy Game Time Cards with real cash, then sell them no in game for ISK. There's something called a Plex Code, which I think is effectively the same thing, but an actual object in the game.

Yes, there is crafting in EvE, almost everything in the game is made by the players. See my "top 50 Games" review of EvE for more!!!

EDIT: We only robbed a corporation of 3 Billion, IIRC. On Christmas day.

As far as I can tell, nigh on every financial institution in EvE has gone this way. It works for a while and provides returns for the investors, until someone gets bored and absconds with the cash. It's quite funny, as the same old tears happen again and again.

Pretty sure the Icelanders don't call their money ISK. Craig?

(Also, Icelandic Kroner doesn't have an 'S' in it).

In the same way we don't call our money GBP, yes.

Yes, because Icelanders call their country 'Iceland' in English, of course.

They spell it Ísland.

If you're bouncing characters forward by the same amount it'd be GRP shirley & that's plastic (or fibreglass anyhow).

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make now. Why would we pronounce it 'Íslandic Kronur' on an English forum? I was explaining why the ISO 4217 currency code for Iceland was ISK.

Myps is a shallow bastard though, and Craster always says the right thing in Emo threads about Jesus.
