About a month ago I got a little tray of 6 very small chilli plants from a local garden centre. The label just said "capsicum chilli". Anyway, I put them on the windowsill and water them every day, transplanted them to bigger pots about a week ago.

Today the first little flower has opened and more are on the way. Woohoo!

Thanks for posting actually ! I'd totally forgotten to get any jalepeno seeds :DD

I'm just wondering whether the seeds in the pickled ones would be fucked? or whether I could make em grow..

That could be what one of my friends gave me at a party while ago. He put a pin-head of what he called 'Satan Sauce' onto a plain tortilla chip, and after eating it I spent an hour sitting with my head on a table, groaning, whimpering and mumbling "I'll be alright in a minute".

I've done this to people are some of my parties with Dave's Insanity Sauce, although that's nowhere near as mental as Jersey Death Sauce. In my defense I would always eat some too. Wusses.

I wish someone would concentrate on creating a chili sauce that intensifies the fresh zesty flavor rather than the heat.

Don't get me wrong, I love hot food, but I'd rather add fresh chilis to my dishes than add hot sauce. My favourite at the moment for heat/taste balance are Bullet Chilis from my local Asian grocers.

These: http://www.spicesofindia.co.uk/acatalog/Indian-Food-Bullet-Green-Chilli-Peppers.html

A garden centre near us. It's plastic, unfortunately, but it'll do the job.

@Zardoz - our local pizza company does a buffalo sauce that's just zesty delicious sour puckeringness.

Er...probably. In small pots. For 15p. You're going to get weird looks from the delivery driver though.

http://www.papajohns.co.uk

Or, to be honest, just hunt around for buffalo wings sauces rather than chilli sauces.

Almost as impressive as kalmar's - these are the chilli-plants-to-be that I planted the seeds for a week and a half ago:

If they come to anything I will separate the seedlings out and re-pot them on the balcony. Jalepenos.

Please excuse camera phone picture.

If you want your chillis to grow hot - once they have flowered & start growing chillies - be really really mean.
Let them almost dry out before you water em so they go all wilty & sad looking. Do this regularly as the chilli pods swell & the plant gets grumpy & churns out capsicum to protect itself.

My chillis have gone a bit sad and wilty and aren't recovering even with (what I assume is) correct watering. I also added some baby bio type fertiliser but that doesn't seem to have helped either :(

Mine are just sat outside in a pot, and they're positively thriving. No feed other than that which I added when I potted them up.

Outside!? Mine are in the greenhouse. I was considering bringing them back inside the house as I think they were doing better there.

Better lay off the fertiliser then..

I got some plants today !

Forget what they're called though, they're not Jalepenos lol.

My sister in law got me them.. They look somewhat like Jalepenos on the pic.

I'll report back when they grow. They're defined as hot, so I might be able to use them for poppers any way :D

Had some strawberries last night - yums!

I have chilis forming on the plants now. Do you let them ripen on the vine or cut them off and ripen on a windowsill or something?

Let them get to the required size on the plant then pick them. I believe a BeeXer said the more you starve them of water at this stage the hotter they become.

Yeah, I've been doing that - letting them wilt down before watering them.

How was the buffalo sauce?

You shouldn't need any fertiliser if they were planted in fresh compost...
You might have a pH/nutrient issue from the fertiliser too - baby bio is _strong_ , but then if you've only put 5 or so drops in ever then it should be ok. You can flush the pot by running 3 times the pot volume of clean fresh water through it, and then leave it to stand.
Other reasons for wilty sadness include overwatering - you want to make sure the soil gets to mostly dry out before watering, else the roots get waterlogged & start rotting away. Check the dampness of the soil a good inch into the pot before watering.

Makes sense to me, that's one of the ways you can stress [tomato] plants into producing more [tomatoes] & make them stronger.

Well over 100 chilis growing on the three plants I have. So....when do I know when they're 'ripe'? They are an unspecified variety, so I'm not sure whether they're expected to grow to an inch or 6 inches.

All chillies (unless they are freaky wierd ones) will go red/orange/yellow - that's when to do the deed. Now you got em at that stage, be sure to treat em mean - let them dry out till they look sad & droopy a couple of times to get the chillis nice & hot!

Hmm - tried one last night, nothing. No heat at all. I've been doing the 'leaving to wilt' thing, and will carry on doing so. Will they get hotter the longer they're on the plant, or do I just have a pot full of shit chilis?

Hmmm, no harm keeping them on the plant for longer I suppose.

Did you harvest a few already? If so try drying them out, maybe.

I'm a big fan of hot sauces and usually have bottles of Tabasco and the mild but tangy Cholula hot sauce in the house and I use them as table sauces with most meals.

I chanced upon a bottle of Daves Insanity Sauce in Adsa so I thought I'd give it a go. After reading the label on the back warning people to avoid if you have heart or respiratory problems I thought I'd go easy.

Fuck me. This is lethally hot stuff. No-no as a 'splash on sauce', but can't wait to try it in a chili or pasta dish.
