this.

Anyway: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/alien ... or-preview

Quote:
The sheer awfulness of the movies has tarnished the reputation of the Aliens vs. Predator crossover in recent years, but Rebellion has excellent AVP pedigree, knocking out 1994's Jaguar title and 1999's PC version - both of which impregnated the hearts of many gamers without the need for forcible tentacular throat-rape. This then is perhaps a chance to redress the balance and produce a game that fits more snugly with the generally excellent comics and graphic novels.

Rebellion's set about doing this by returning to the approach that made the PC first-person shooter so lovable, essentially crafting three very different games, with each playable race offering a distinctly different approach.

Hurrah!

I hope not. I only really care about Colonial Marines. AvP has been done, this won't bring anything new to the series and to be honest the Alien/Pred crossover just isn't that interesting. It has always felt forced even in the comics.

The films were atrocious gash but I don't think the source material really supports a good film anyway.

I am pretty sure it is still on track, and a completely separate game.

I wasn't expecting Brecht when I watched AvP, but I think Notting Hill had a more complex plot.

Given your favoured cinematic ouevre you'll excuse me if I don't lend too much weight to your opinion on plot complexity.

Anyway - why do you need a complex plot when you've got aliens fighting each other?

Oh come on - they weren't brilliant, but they certainly weren't rubbish. They were 4 or 5 out of 10, and they both had some good moments to them.

The second was better than the first, IMO, in that it didn't shit all over the original films.

It also had the bit with the small boy and the bit with the maternity ward, which were brilliantly unpleasant. Also - that hot blonde girl in her knickers.

The first referred to the original films, but were there inconsistencies? It was the Weyland thing, wasn't it?

For starters. The amazing speed in which the aliens gestated and reached maturity actually made me shout "oh, fuck off" at the cinema screen. Gratifyingly, I wasn't the only one.
You could see the wires holding the aliens tails up, FFS, and the CG aliens had a different bone structure in their legs to the obviously human ones. I honestly think the alien in Alien looked better then the Aliens in AvP.

It happened reasonably quickly in Alien though, didn't it? A few days? How quick was it in AvP? I can't remember.

no no no no no.

AvP was better than AvP:R but it was still pretty rubbish.

Spoilers and language!

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Reasons to hate AvP;

The best bits (the fights) are ruined by 1. shakey cam hell and 2. the As and the Ps being painted grey.

The casting is awful, especially for an Alien film. Especially the main woman. I wasn't expecting another Sigourney but this girl can fuck off.

'The enemy of my enemy is my friend'. Oh fuck off, Love. I don't need that spelt out.

Alien pregnancy taking minutes. Ugh.

Lance Henriksen crow-barred in for no discernable reason.

The only likeable character (the Scottish guy from Trainspotting) getting killed cheaply.

Not scary in the slightest.

That Colin bloke who turns up in all the Paul Anderson films. He's still shit.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

AvP:R

Miles worse. Reasons =

30 year olds pretending to be 18.

breaking into a swimming pool to have a party and pre-marital sex. Just throw Jason Vorhees in there you unoriginal cunts. FFS!

Aliens clearly being fat stuntmen in suits. No grace at all. Like intergalactic alsations.

No moral compass at all. Fuck that maternity ward scene. totally unnecessary and not implemented very well at all. also the kid seeing his dad die at the beginning. fuck off.

Pizza boy plot = pathetic.

Even more visually confusing than the first. Especially when Pred (who is a twat) fights Pred Alien (LOL @ it having dreads).

Pred World looks like shit lego.

It's a slasher flick and not even a good one. It makes Scream seem decent.

Poor attempts at having Vasquez and Hicks type characters.

Ends with 'Directed by The Brothers Strauss'. The Brothers Cunt, more like.

BUT: If the predators were using the aliens a hunting sport, it would make sense for them, in that given timeframe, to select those that gestate quicker than normal. And, given the time frame, it's entirely possible this is what happened.

In case it hasn't been confirmed in here, Colonial Marines is still in development, but its release has been put back to make way for AvP. This is good because now they have more time to make it fucking ace.

The predators were very careful that the aliens only reproduced in the numbers they wanted. They send seeding ships containing eggs to the planet weeks before they land and hunt them.

So they still could have selectively bred those eggs to gestate faster.

(Is surprised he is debating selective breeding with regard to AvP)

Breeding things to make them gestate faster seems a bit sketchy as a concept. Especially going from days to minutes.

Yeah, because when you're dealing with aliens with acid for blood and no discernable way of actually working as a species you're setting the realism bar quite high.

It's been suggested that the Navigators (the big bugger on the crashed ship in Alien) used (and created) them as weapons, and was leant on some more in a few of the books (Earth Hive, for instance) but there's no 'proof'.

Whilst we are talking about the Alien films. I have seen them all, but I have heard that there have been various different cuts of a few of them, both official and unofficial.

I'm in the mood to watch them all again. Which versions should I watch?

Directors cut Alien and Aliens, theatrical Alien³ and A:Res.

Wasn't there a re-edit of Alien³ that was supposed to be really good?

I've got both versions of all of them and I have to say I can't remember the Alien3 one being that different. I'm sure Grim... can correct me!

the Alien3 director's cut is definitely better. the main difference is a sequence where they try to trap the alien in a big storage vault thing.

I love Alien3. I don't care what anyone one says, it's ace. Especially the casting.

Me too.
I dunno about the director's cut being that much better, though. If I had the original Alien³, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy the directors cut.
Although I have, of course.

there was a short story that was part of a collection called 'Dark Horse Presents: Aliens' that suggested that they used the aliens to clear planets so that they could move in. There is also a big suggestion that they have some kind of telepathic control of Ripley.

The Director's Cut of Alien 3 is an order of magnitude better than the theatrical release, but it still suffers from the oft-quoted problems - i.e. the two characters (except Ripley) that people grew to love in Aliens being killed off in the first couple of minutes.

There's far more character development in the director's ct.

Yeah, but they can't call it the Director's Cut, as Fincher wants nowt to do with it at all anymore.

Id recommend you buy the Quadrilogy, it can be had for £9.99 most places
It has both cuts of each film, plus loads of extras (9 discs in total).

I paid a full price for that when it first came out when the understanding was that there would be a limited about. Fucking ripoff merchants.

That was the limited edition quadrilogy though, LaceSensor is talking about the other quadrilogy that still has all the good stuff but everyone can buy it.

I got that box set also.

Previously I had loads of VHS versions of the films. I also had a making of Alien: Resurrection vid that was presented by Ron Perlman. He came across as a complete lovey in it though. :(

Fucking Alien stuff always costs me loads. ie - I bought a PC just to play AvP. I bought a Jaguar for its version of AvP. I bought a DVD player just to get the quadrilogy.

I'm holding off on Blu Ray tho. Between all the films, books, toys and comics I think I've got enough alien stuff now.

either way tenner is a bargain, but yeah, I have the original release too it was about £50 at the time. still, a good price, but for £9.99 its ridiculous to not own it.

I remember they did an alien head box too, kinda lifesize alien bust with the dvds inside was over £100 though and would look freak on the bookshelf :p

I've got all four Alien films on DVD, and the Quadrilogy, and the "Ultimate Alien & Predator Collection" with all the Alien and Predator films and AvP1. I've got a signed Alien script too, which belonged to one of the lighting guys. Someone (Gazchap?) has a rather nice Pulse Rifle replica :)
