So my 360 RROD'd the other day - almost two years to the day I bought it - and I'm left with a quandry.

I'll be without a 360 for the better part of a month, which is bogus. However, since the console had a manufacture date of late 2006 I'm concerned that they'll just have replaced the faulty parts with 2006 era parts and so the problem will remain and resurface sometime later.

Will MS replace the gubbins with the newest bits and pieces (Jasper chips, is it)?

Does the cheaper arcade version skrimp on internals compared to the Premium (bearing in mind I have the Wi-Fi dongle, an HDD, wireless controllers etc)? If not, I might get a 360 Arcade and use my existing parts - possibly worth it for the extended 3 year warranty on RROD and e74 as I'm sure if it happens to my current 360 again it'll be out of warranty.

I think they replace all the broken parts with newer stuff, so usually it's a new mobo and graphics chip. There are issues with newer machines having HDMI so they won't replace everything, though I have heard of people getting essentially new machines back. Mine's been back twice and last time they replaced the mobo, graphics chip and DVD drive.

MS will probably give you a reconditioned model as a replacement.

The Arcade is physically identical to the premium, aside from a white or silver dvd tray.

Hmmm. If the turn-around is fairly quick I may exercise some patience and hold off getting the Arcade machine.

The first time it took about 10 days from box going out of the door to it arriving back. The second time it was my ethernet port that knacked, and I bought an Arcade instead of paying for the repair, as it was out of warranty. I'm helping!

Right. I'm following the Dimrill plan - let Microsoft fix this one and if it knackers again new console!

When my original Elite (Falcon model) got the E74, they sent me a completely new Elite, but of the oldest model (the 225W one).

That one was faulty out of the box (weird graphics corruption, but never RRoD'ed), so then they sent me another completely new Elite, also of the oldest model. I don't expect it to last long.

Conclusion: I should never have bought an Elite.

If it helps, both Bobbyaro and I sent ours off recently and got them back on the same day. It took 14 days from picking them up to bringing them back.

someone gave me a 360 that RROD and broken DVD

I registered it, sent to MS and got it back in 2 weeks. The service was excellent and I got a free 1months live card with it to boot.

The replacement console arrived this morning! Although it's complete arse that it failed in the first place, Microsoft's service was spot on. Also, this "new" 360 is considerably quiter than the old one.

Possible that your DVD drive was giving up. The 360 properly thrashes them, has it been ticked off on the 'bits what we replaced, like' list?

Sadly they don't provide a list of what they changed, however it's definitely a quiter DVD drive (the old one made a racket from day one) and the fans are certainly a lot quiter too.
