Apart from "get thee to a doctor/dentist" does anyone have any advice for the following...

I have a massive ache in my upper jaw on the right side, it's approx between my eye and ear. It's about the most painful sensation I've ever felt, I've had this since late Saturday, and it was coming and going on and off, but yesterday I realised that taking cough sweets (specifically tesco own brand antibiotic cough sweets) took away the pain temporarily.

So I'm guessing one of my teeth has an infected root and the cough sweets are killing it.

Now, I did have a filling fallout of one of my teeth, on the lower part of that jaw, and occaisonally that tingles (but no where near the pain that I've been in the last few days)

So, if it doesn't go away before tomorrow, I'll probably see my doctor, but if it's a dentist that's needed, then I can't stand them, and probably can't afford one, so god knows what I'll do.

It could be neuralgia if I've spelt it correctly. Sometimes brought on by stress. That, or bad aids.

Go to your doctor anyway, if it is an infection your doc or dentist will just give you antibiotics anyway as even if work does need doing, they have to get rid of the infection first.

If it is a tooth, try clove oil.

You need an old priest and a young priest.

Might be a sinus problem that, if you've also got a cold / swine flue thing going on.

But the level of pain does sound like a bad root, sorry to say.

I suggest you contact that crazy homoeopathy guy who was pitching his wares on Twitter. I'm sure he'd have some advice.

Wrongage! Not the advice, clove oil. It tastes like the inside of Helen Mirrens' bathroom bin...I imagine

Used in excess clove oil can also destroy your gums. If the pain's really bad you can ask the pharmacist for Paramol. It's strong stuff, so they'll ask if you've used it before first. Get to the doc/dent as Jazzy said, but if the pain continues after the anti-biotics it may be the tooth is dying. My missus lost three in quick succession last year, so we went through this for about 10 months :S

It sounds like it could be an infected root and as bad as the idea of the dentist may seem now, if that infection turns into an abscess on a back tooth, you're MUCH better off going now.

It's not that I'm scared of the dentist, it's that I really hate them, When I was a child, I had a really good dentist, but they started taking on social worker cases only, so I had to change dentists aged about 14/15, that dentist did so much crap to my teeth (and told me that I about 1/3rd of my teeth were still milk teeth, and that I had no replacements coming through) that didn't need doing it's untrue, but my parents told me I was being silly, then I moved out, and went to a different dentist, he was just rubbish and made stuff up, told me I needed something doing, I went to another dentist that had been recommended to me by a friend and they said that if I had listened to that other dentist I would have ended up paying through the nose for work that was not needed.

I think most of them are crooked, and want to do the least amount of work for the most amount of money, I guess I will end up going to one if needed, if I can find one that will take me. I've had root canal work in the past (from the recommended dentist) so know how painful those things can get, but unless I've blocked out the memory of the pain, this (when it comes) is much worse. Someone mentioned ear infection, and I'm sorta hoping it's that (my right ear has been quite sore recently too, but no way near as bad as this other pain)

Ah well, calling the doctors first thing in the morning, to make an appointment. I'll see what he has to say.

If it's an ear infection, try pressing on that little triangle bit of cartilidge that's closest to your cheek. If it hurts when you do, then you may have an ear infection. Problem is that the nerves for both run along your jawline/cheek, so either will affect the other.

Yeah, it hurts when I do that, but it's been itchy recently anyway, and when I've used a cotton bud (and no I don't go too deep) it's hurt afterwards, but not much, and I've just dismissed it (the other ear has been fine) but like you say, everything is interlinked in that area, so it could be anything.

If you phone up my surgery between 08:00 and 08:30 in the morning, then you can usually get a slot at some point in the day. I'm working from home tomorrow, and that's the plan.

I have an "unseen boil" in my right ear, it has swollen and is pressing on a nerve. Apparently it will clear on its own in 7-10 days.

Brilliant. Nothing to worry about then, apart from the pain, obviously. Have you found anything aside from cough sweets that alleviates it?

No, the doctor has said try codeine (sp?) On the box of cough sweets it says they have an anaesthetic property too, so I guess that's what was helping there.

Worth a try, but I think it tends to make people a bit drowsy.

Try Syndol if you aren't driving anywhere. They have an antihistamine in them which will help relax you. Particulalrly good when going to bed. Be warned though, if you haven't had codeine before, it is an opiate so you may well see flashy things in front of your eyes.

Heh, trust you to know that codeine is from the same family as heroin. ;)

Paramol is the one that you want (do do do dabba do), as that's the codeine and paracetamol mix.

It's the only thing that even slightly dented my tonsilectomy recovery pain.

I'm not sure that I could rest in the knowledge I had an internal boil, I'd almost certainly try and find a way of popping or lancing it, even if it meant hammering a heated knitting needle into my ear.

Squeezing spots, boils, abscesses, cysts etc is so much fun.

I've just had 2.5 hours of painfreeness (from about 18:15 till about quarter of an hour ago) shame I can only take these tablets 4 times a day.
