Started the game again with a shitload of mods.
Seems this isn't a worthless game at all. Deadly Reflex makes hand to hand combat much more interesting.

Oblivion Oscuro Overhaul is the MOD. Enough said.

DarnUI, makes the unbearable interface one thing of beauty.

The think that strikes me as odd is that the game, being much uglier than FO3, demands quite a bit more of resources.

Anyone has been playing this lately?

I've done it through 3 times. Bought The Shivering Isles but got distracted and bored with the first hour. I don't wanna get dragged into another TES game until 5, really.

Still have the 360 version to complete and the expansions. I love it despite its flaws, great game.

Just finished the 360 version last week. It's a deeply, deeply flawed game that still manages to be captivating in spite of being rubbish in a number of places. The worst part about Oblivion, ironically, is Oblivion itself - especially if you're a twonk like me and complete that stupid quest to close the gates outside all of the cities without realising it's completely optional.
Bethesda should also be repeatedly slapped for the combat system and for employing seven people to do all the voicework.

Morrowind is still my fave.

Well, i urge you to try this on PC when you have reasonably powered machines. The mods made such a difference. The flaws in the game were to much for me to cope with. Now the game is absolutely amazing.

Have a look at Adrenaline Oblivion if your PC can handle it. It weakens the enemies somewhat, but significantly increases their number, and they travel in packs. One enemy poses no threat, but wait 'til they inevitably surround you. It's bloody great fun.

i also though about that but i didn't wanted to go overboard with the mods. I might install it latter if i get bored.

Have you tried the deadly reflex mod? It's gives much more "weight" to the combat, just like games like Dark Messiah of might and magic.

It rings a bell, but I can't specifically remember it.

There's so much potential in Oblivion. I'd never pick it up on a console.

When i played the game 3 years ago, it looked ok but my computer struggled with it. Now the dungeons (specially the forts) look amazing with HDR. It's that kind of dungeons i pictured in my head when i played the likes of Eye of Beholder and the Bards tale

I wish I'd kept all the mods I initially installed, but I didn't have the foresight to do so.

I had such a brilliant moment, riding through the pitch black night on horseback in the pissing down rain with only a blazing torch to light my way. I couldn't see anything further than a few feet ahead of me. It was incredibly immersive.

Mod support for games is the one thing that makes me cling on to the idea of PCs for gaming. Unfortunately I just can't invest the cash in it that I'd need to in order to keep up.

How difficult would it be to get these mods to be a download from XBL? Not all of them, obv, but some of the larger more popular ones. Or does it contravene MS must charge people for stuff rules?

It's not that so much (although I'm sure it's part of it), but more that MS are extremely strict with what can be offered for DLC what can't. It's more like the iPhone app store than the PC modding community.

On one hand it means we're not inundated with shovelware (although Apple do seem to be suffering from that problem), but it alsomeans we miss out on stuff like this.

why would MS would be wasting hosting space and bandwidth when there's nothing to gain from it? I don't blame them.

It's just the way things are. That's why i prefer PC's (among many other things).

XNA is like the iPhone store. The mainstream DLC on the 360 is much, much more controlled. See also: Epic shipping mod support for Unreal Tournament III on the PS3 but being unable to offer it on the 360. On the PS3, you can insert a memory card, use the PS's web browser, and download mods, maps and mutators to it; when you load the game UT3 imports them and away you go.

there is another factor in. Many mods alter the performance of the game, like the one malabar front mentioned. The xbox360 with its old and fixed hardware can't cope with that.

I don't think that's the real reason. I think Microsoft are concerned you could introduce a mod with a deliberate attack on the console, like a buffer overflow attack on a core component, to defeat the protection. Like the original Xbox's softmod attack -- by injecting a font file that was deliberately corrupted, the Xbox ended up running unsigned code, and once you do that once you can break the console wide open.

Full HDR support, but they need to be careful of bandwidth when doing HDR and full-scene anti aliasing.

I was not suggesting supporting an open mod enivironment, I was asking about taking a number of established Oblivion mods and making them into an approved d/l for the game, thus ensuring there is no hacks about and things like that.

Yes, I have just started to play this on the 360. I am not getting into it that well. I have saved a game just before you get out of the sewers and picked a character twice now and haven't been able to get much further at all. Let me tell you how my games went.

I step out of the sewers to a lovely sunny day and a quaint little ruined abbey in the distance. "That looks nice" I think, so I wander over there. Next thing I know I have two gents, who I have never met, coming at me with a fuck off sledgehammer and and a bow and arrows. I kill them and nick their stuff. Now I am over encumbered so I drop the pelvis (pelvi), skulls and fibias that I picked up while in the sewers and put on the fur gauntlets I find. Bam. I am starkers except for some fur gauntlets and a leather bikini. And I'm a bloke (not really). Anyway I decide to walk about like this, proud of my elfine figure. Where am I going anyway? Check quest list... I meant to go to some monostary. This should be fun, a semi-naked dark elf sauntering into a monostary holding a talisman of something or other. When I get there the monks don't even bat an eyelid. I wanted tentpoling smoks.

Then I have to go to some other place to find some dude. So, I go there and start chatting to everyone I meet about everything my character can think of. I wander around and find some soldiers in trouble. I decide to help them and go into a wobbly gate thing. Then I have to fight so many things I die. Bollocks to this I say to myself.


Next go:

Same charater. I choose to fuck the important quest right off and decide to explore a couple of towns. Same thing with the two blokes though. I go to one and walk around, fully clothed this time. I meander into the Mages guild. To get in I am meant to speak to all the mages, of which there are two, and whichever one I speak to nothing happens. I steal some cool magic stuff from some of the rooms and once again become over encumbered. I drop the assorted bric-a-brack I got from the sewers and walk around for a bit more. Nothing happens. Bollocks to this I think again and play some Ninja Gaiden II.

I think I went in with the wrong attitude to play this sort of game having come straight from Bully, which gets going quite quickly. I will give it another try but any thoughts on starting off and getting a couple of quests under my belt would be appreciated.

The mages you require are each guild in each town on the map. The mage's guild probably one of the most quest-intensive ones to try to get into. I'd recommend going and talking to Friar Fuck at the monkhouseplace first, then doing what he says next. As soon as you've roamed around a bit you can use your map to fast travel around to avoid the bandits and stuff. That ruined abbey is a bandit camp just north of the capital city :D

judging by your comments this game just isn't for your tastes. Well, it wasn't for mine either, but for different reasons ;)

Right, give the main quest a bit of a go first, will do. Starting this game gives me the same feeling I got when I played San Andreas. There is too much to do at first and the game just dumps you in and tells you to get on with it. I stalled at about 1% of San Andreas for over a year. Then once I got going I loved it.

But the boot is surprisingly roomy for those extra knick knacks, plus it has flappy paddle ears and a 30litre bladder tank and springs and shit.

for me the best way to experience this kind of games is to avoid being OCD about it. Just don't obsess on discovering every single thing in the game. Just explore at your own pace and accept the fact that by the end of your experience you might not discovered everything. You know, like in the real world.

@Ruysan: I get this, but I oddly liked the sewers bit with it's limited choice of routes and set goal. Getting outside left me intimidated and bewildered. I think my subconsious knows I won't have a full amount of time to devote to this this week and coming back to a game like this is a nightmare so it is stopping me from getting going. I am sure I will get into it at some point. I do really want to love it.

Also that bizarre conversation persuasion wheel left me baffled. I read the manual, tried it, got nowhere, read the manual again, tried it, got nowhere. It probably needs some experimentation.

Despite it not being modifiable, I enjoyed playing through Oblivion for (I think) 180ish hours & was still discovering new things/quests as I ran around.

that's because it's very stupid. I don't know how they came with such a stupid idea. You must see what kind of emotions make the numbers go up or down in each character (always 2 favorable and 2 wich are not). Then try to match the bigger triangles with the good ones, and the small triangles with the bad.

last night i ran away from a fort with 3 vampires on the chase. I lured them to the nearest village where they were distracted by the population so they let me go. Good fun. Too bad these vampires have no issues with the sun

Well I finally decided to get back into Oblivion last night, and after a few 'how the fuck do I play this again' moments I am re-hooked. I only stopped last time because I got to

The final confrontation in Paradise to get the amulet back of that geezer
but realised I was too under equipped.

So now I'm all refreshed after the hiatus I'm doing some quests I missed out on (starting with the Arena) to get myself buff for the finish, before getting into Knights of the Nine and the Shimmering Isle.

Yeah, that fight was absolutely horrible, not least of all because they all heal each other and that chap helping is hopelessly shit.

SHIVERING Isles are easily done with a brand new level 1 character. Heck, mine arrived with nothing but the rags on her back (and, er, that soul eating sword that you can obtain as soon as you leave the sewers).

I don't play since last thursay, while i was doing quests in Anvil. It reminds me a lot of the town i was raised.

i might buy a house in Anvil just because of that.

Yes, you have to pay for it - but it's a huge, lovely, unique house and well worth the fairly reasonable price and also the minor quest you have to complete. Trust me, you'll love the basement.


@Zarzie: You don't think the game itself is a bit cheaty? Your decision. I struggled through that fight by the skin of my teeth over the course of several tedious, swear-filled hours.

I've swore at the game many times (130hrs I've drained into this so far) but I've always found a way through the tough bits, that's what I enjoy the most really.

I'll see how I feel once I've leveled up and kitted myself out better.
