Dunno if this has been posted elsewhere, but Ghostbusters: The Videogame is now a PlayStation exclusive in PAL territories, including Europe and Australia. Sony has taken over publishing duties from Atari less than a month before the game's release.

Edit: Also, No Duke Nukem Forever for you! http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58519

Is that older news? Eurogamer posted a similar story and followed it shortly with an 'Atari still publishing everything else for every other format'. Gamesindustry.biz was cited, though I've not been able to check that.

The game is being published by Sony Computer Enternainment Europe in PAL territories, which presumably means no Wii or Xbox version ever.

I can't believe you aren't all gnashing your teeth over this. Sure, the game is doubtlessly going to be crap, but it's Ghostbusters, damn it! They'll probably region lock it too, the cunts.

They say laughter is the best medicine. This article isn't that funny, but it's the best I could come up with in my wilted, heartbroken state. Damn you Sony... Damn you to Hell.

What exactly do they offer the developers to get them to agree to cut out 2/3 of their market?

Anyway, I'm not overly concerned - I have a PS3.

Except! Atari are to publish Ghostbusters on the Xbox 360!

Which is, of course, what that MetalAngel fella said.

Ghostbusters 2 wasn't all that either. I'm not overly bothered. I'll probably pick it up for PS3 when I get one in 2016.

Well, in this case I believe Sony owns the movie rights, which may have given them some added clout.

Hmm. I may not have to kill myself after all then. Mind you, 'later in the year' is a bit vague. They could secretly be talking about the year 2011.

In the year 201x, Ghostbusters was releasing.

"What happen?"

"Sony stitched us up the treat."

Bit desperate when Sony claim victory by bagging a game that could for all we know be total shit.

Ah well, whatever. That means I can't buy it for my PC now (even though it started life as a PC only game /Rolleyes) and they're limiting the paying audience.

FFS, talk about pick the format it will sell the least on haha.

Probably not so bad news for Wii owners, as with Gecko the region-coding's quite easy to sidestep, but for Xbox 360 owners, bit annoying I'd imagine. That's if the game turns out to be good*. Looks a bit like Resident Evil 4 to me, with added Bill Murray.

* It's not going to be any more shit than the old Activision 8-bit Ghostbusters game, worst come to the worst, though. Maybe.

Anybody that thinks the original 8-bit version of Ghostbusters is shit clearly never played the C64 version. I still play that to this day on my PSP when I'm bored. The Master System version was alright too.

Most of the other versions are shit though, especially the utterly terrible NES one.

I was playing the megadrive one on the xbox last night and it's a jolly little platformer. The spectrum version was awesome. Really loved listening to the spectrum say "he slimed me" and it sounded like he had a mouthful of cornflakes.

Ahh, happy days :D

Getting pretty good scores on Metacritc. I want this I think. Can't decide between just getting it on PS3 or importing the 360 version. There are more bezzies with PS3s these days, so I'm not totally giving up on multiplayer by getting that version.

Some great journalism from Eurogamer's review by Ellie Gibson. The concluding paragraphs:

Quote:
Ignoring the blockbuster licence, you'd probably describe this as a nice looking but pretty average action-adventure. The game mechanics work fine, it's entertaining enough to play, but there's no real innovation and a fair few frustrating niggles. The thing is, you can't ignore the licence - not when it's so fundamental to the game's entertainment value, and when Terminal Reality has worked so hard to do it justice.

That's why Ghostbusters: The Videogame works. You get to play with a proton gun. You get to fire Boson darts. You get to explore the Fire Station, battle Slimer, fight the marshmallow man, destroy the library and hear Bill Murray do jokes. It's all wrapped up in a package authentic enough to make you forgive the linearity and inconsistencies, tied with a big bow made of pretty graphics. And when you open the package the first thing you hear is, "Nerny ner-ner ner-ner, nerny-nerny ner-ner-ner."

If you love the film it's impossible not to like this game, despite its faults. That would be like hating a puppy just because it's got a wonky leg. This might not be the best videogame ever made but it's one of the better movie tie-ins out there, and it's the closest to being a Ghostbuster most of us will ever get.

I think I want Ghostbusters as well (360), although I'd want it pretty cheap.

Aren't those radio adverts awful though.

That's not really selling it to me as a must buy title though, it just sounds like another hyped up licensed game. I think I'll wait & see what real people make of it (or it gets cheap) instead of jaded cunts that get paid to say nice things.

It's not her job to sell it though is it -- it's her job to describe it, which I think she did well -- particularly with that puppy similie. On the other side, it totally sold it to me. Ghostbusters is hands-down my most watched DVD.

I'm also tempted, and I never bother importing games.

I'm also not sure how big a part the multiplayer is. Or even what type it is.

As I mentioned in the B'N'B thread, I downloaded the PC version overnight and had a quick 5-minute play this morning before leaving for work, just enough time to trap my first ghost. I likes it! It looks like it's going to be a corker for people like me: those who utterly love Ghostbusters and have just purchased the BluRay of it from play with the free musical Ecto-1 keyring.

I'm thinking I might purchase the PS3 version anyway though for big screen hijinks, trophies and hopefully some hawt bezzie action.

Bugger. It runs a treat on my PC too - 1680x1050 resolution, everything set to 'High', though curiously I couldn't find an anti-aliasing option. But then I literally played enough to trap the first ghost, then ran to the car 'cos I was already running late for work. I'll give it a proper blast tonight.

The PC version is only single-player though, no multiplayer mode at all and I can't play it on my big telly (well... I probably could if I could be bothered to hook the PC up to it). And obviously no trophies.

Dunno if it's been mentioned, but Stateside Gentlemen are reporting that the 360 version released there is region encoding free.

Well Atari certainly haven't gone out of their way to stop people in the UK buying the PC version - my copy is a totally legitimate Digital River download from the Atari US site. I registered it with my real name, with my real UK address and paid for it with my UK Paypal account. Only porky pie I had to tell was my phone number as their website wouldn't accept UK formatted phone numbers.

I know. But bear with me. I'm too lazy to import, the PS3 version looks like shit, the multiplayer isn't a big part of this, my PC is a shiny new toy, and most importantly of all, it'll be about £6 next month like all PC games seem to be.

Well, it cost me £24 of your Earth money last night, which I didn't think was too bad considering how much the PS3 version is likely to cost tomorrow.

Having seen that comparison, I'm starting to feel quite pleased I bought the PC game now... I just wish I'd done something like this when Fallout 3 came out!

OK, fair enough, but 39 sponds is a lot of sponds for most games to my mind; and as this is an import game, you won't be seeing the usual £18 preowned/new-from-Play style deals in a few months. It'll probably stay that price.
