I bought a bunch of disposable festival clothes from Primark today, paid on my card.

I checked my banking online, and there is no record of the payment as of yet.

Is this normal, or are they supposed to come up instantly?

I know in the states it went out immediately. BUT. It only did that because the bank had frozen the funds and if they didn't take their money within 48 hours it would go back and could then go missing at any time.

Weird shit happens when using cards, and they never seem to make mistakes lol.

Imagine my delight when $2300 on travel fees and clothes was returned to me, only to go missing the next day again :D

About the only thing that shows up instantly on my online banking (Natwest) is when I've used a cashpoint. Everything else takes a day or two to appear.

What devilman said.. This is normal for banks. The money that you've spent has been put aside so you can't spend it again. You'll see this on an "available balance" section of your account then in a couple of days time, the transaction will appear on your statement.

There are 3 main ways that card payments work

1) Authorisation and payment done in one go.

2) Authorisation of one transaction, and payment of the previous tranasction

3) Authorisations build up through the day, at the end of the day they are batched and polled off in one go.

It sounds like the store you used was using option 3. Sometimes if there are probelms with the polling process the transaction can be delayed for several days, or weeks (rare) or months (Very rare)

I bought a necklace for the wife from Beaverbrooks and it took nearly a month for the charge to appear on my account. It can take time.

In cases where it takes more than a certain time (I think it's a month, but not sure) you can actually refuse to pay it and the card company has to refund you - it's in the small print :)

However, nightly de-tank for offline transactions is quite common so it'll reach the bank tomorrow, and might then show up on your online statement then (or at least they'll take it off your available balance).

I'm still waiting for Amazon to charge me for Akira volume 5. 2002 since it arrived. I think they may have forgot about it now.

An Authorisation lasts for 5 working days, if the money hasn't come out of your account by then, the money stops being "ring fenced". This doesn't stop the money from coming out later as previously mentioned.
