Love this. It's the 1985 Radio 1 calender up for sale on Ebay and every DJ has signed it:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260427581684

One of those people is a former employer of mine! Would bid but it is likely to go for serious money (or at least more than I am willing to pay).

Click on the piccies for larger versions.

Fantastic!

Am I alone in detecting a hint of homoerotica in some of those pictures?

Surely "Brokeback Mountain" March is the worst of the lot.

Also, I like the fact that John Peel is the only one who has the common decency to look grumpy at being made to look such a pillock.

May's "truck driver and his mate" is pretty blatant.

As per Radio 1 standard of the era, the DJ pairings are all people who didn't hate each others guts. The same applied to the Top Of The Pops pairings. Peel would often be paired off with Janice Long or David Jenson because they got on. You wouldn't get Bates and DLT together, you'd have to pair each of them off with someone else.

Which made the seething under the surface hatred in some of the group shots all the more endearing.

Some more observations (yes, I'm bored).

The Gary Davies one is hilarious. He's obviously the pin-up boy, hence the daring exposure of chest hair, but the pose makes him look like he's got his elbow glued to the railing and he's trying desperately to look cool and nonchalant to divert attention from it.

The Simon Bates one looks like they've taken his head and stuck it on a photo of an actual jockey's body. It looks bizarrely out of proportion.

Were ginormous glasses ever really in style?

He would often present the shows with a romantic slant using phrases towards records such as 'this one has a government meltability warning' and 'open the fridge door and make sure it's packed with ice' with additional jingles such as 'jazz, jazz, jazz, jazz, jazz'

I appear to have entirely missed out on this. Never mind though!
R1 was so much better in the 90s.

Who's your former employee then Chinners?

For me he was the signal to switch off after Annie Nightingale on Sunday evenings.

Oh and he presented Go For It - low-budget fitness show in the 5:35 slot before Neighbours cancelled loads of shows at a stroke.
