A friend has a game that has bugs. There is apparently a fix for those bugs - yay! He has no internet access so can't download the patch - boo! Maybe I can download it for him - yay!

Only - how would I go about doing that? Presumably I'd have to bring the game to my house, download the patch, then what? Can the patch file itself be transferred to a memory card? If so, would it then only install on the other 360 under my profile? Which isn't on there, obviously, as the 360 isn't online.

Helpies pleasies?

I think he'd have to let you have his 360 and the game so you can connect and download the patch.

set up a pc network, maybe. Try calling xbox (start with sales, someone always answers there), you never know when the one legally required competent person might be working.

Is this the guy the reason you're always moaning that there aren't enough offline co-op games? Just tell him to get into the 21st century, FFS. ;)

Well online co-op games won't exactly help, what with him not having two TVs and consoles at his house.

He doesn't have internet access due to a 'disagreement' with O2. They wanted him to pay his line rental, he seemed not to.

The issue seems to be the not paying of the line rental.

The other potential problem is the storage of the patch once installed. In that it's hardly permanent.

You are the Master of Mobile Internet Devices. Go to his house with one, and a laptop. Tether mobile device to laptop. Wire laptop's ethernet to 360. Configure laptop to bridge the networks. Connect Xbox to Live, patch, disconnect.

I did think of that. I was rather hoping there was a way for me not to bother - especially as I currently have an iPhone (3G, no tethering yet) and a Blackberry 8900 (Tethering, but EDGE. EDGE!).

I guess I could probably stick my BB SIM in a 3G HTC I've got - if I can find it...

Nothing, except I'm a little unsure on the details. Is there nothing tying downloaded software to the console itself, rather than the hard disk?

Don't think so. I've taken my hard drive round to other people's houses before so we could play all my Rock Band DLC etc.

I don't *think* this is the case for downloaded patches, but for some reason games ripped to the hard drive are locked to the console. I took Rock Band 2 to MyFinger's house with my hard drive and it still spooled the game from the disc.

Thinking on - it didn't patch Rock Band 2. I think that means the downloads aren't locked, which is what you would probably expect.

It's not downloaded software, it's just a patch.

For arcade games it's tied to either the profile or the machine, one has to match, but there's no way they're going to care about a game patch.

FTFY ;)

I've just twigged: Do you have a 360 at work, Cras? Is that why you keep going on about local multiplayer?

Also, while your here and entirely non-related: What do I need for my phone to charge it and listen to music at the same time?

You told me about it - it's that same thing they use in other HTC phones, that gives you a usb port and a headphone jack, or something.

If you didn't hate libraries you'd know it was spelt "lackey".

I'll thank you not to point out to everyone I just mispelled it in IM.

i can't get the link as i'm at work but when i first got my 360 i was looking at comaptabilty issues with xbox games. there is a site that has them listed and it has a download that you can burn to disc to install locally to 360. i wonder if there is any similar 360 updates that can be done this way? I assume it is just a patch for the game rather than DLC?

Next question!

Profiles on a memory card. Am I right in saying that I can put my Live profile on a memory card, and thus have access to it on any 360 without having to recover it?

Yes. My profile lives on memory card, so I can take it up to MyFinger's house for splitscreen gaming.
