The rumors of a remake of the original Monkey Island for Xbox Live Arcade are true, but it gets much better, as LucasArts and Telltale team up to deliver all-new episodic Monkey Island adventures.

Starting this July, Telltale will be releasing Tales of Monkey Island, a five-episode monthly adventure game series for the PC and WiiWare featuring the further adventures of Guybrush Threepwood and nemesis, LeChuck, as Guy accidentally releases a voodoo pox that threatens to turn the swashbuckling men of the Caribbean into pirate monsters, which is the only thing worse than just plain pirates.

Meanwhile, LucasArts is internally developing The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, which is a completely update version of the 1990 original, complete with new graphics, a remastered musical score, and full voice-overs. FULL VOICE-OVERS.

This could either be very good news, or very sad news, depending on how they handle it. The Secret of Monkey Island is due out this summer on Xbox Live Arcade and the PC.

I'll get the remake on XBLAH for deffo, but the PC version... hmm. I'm loathe to do that simply due to the fact I bought the first season of Sam and Max as it came out and just didn't play them. If they were on XBLAH I definitely would. Yes yes, I'm stupid.

Are telltale sam & max games any good? I love monkey island, but i dunno if they can reach the heights of the 1st two in terms of jokes and overall writing.

For what I played, I laughed quite a few times.

Oh hang on. I've just realised if it's telltale does that mean TIm Schafers not involved?

Technically thats a good thing because I love the fact he pumps out new characters and stories with every game rather than just recycle stuff.

But still, :(

They were given desperately average reviews in PC Gamer (who reviewed each individually, bless 'em) who said they recycled far too much between episodes (often with the same gags) and that it only really started getting sort of going in the second 'season'.

I've got the demo of Wallski and Gromovich to try later, though I find their selling out rather sickening so I might be biased already.

A remake of the first game? Are they going to keep the (relatively realistic) graphics style, or are they going to proceed with the abhorrent Dragon's Lair-ish cartoony style used in MI3 and 4?

MI3 was my favourite in the series. Loved it. 4 was awful 3D made for consoles shit.

This apart from Monkey 2 was my favourite.
Monkey 3 did a great job at still being a point and click, but without the menu bit at the bottom and the cartoony graphics worked spectacularly :D

Monkey 4 was a massive let down.

MI3 was too hard. MI always had very obscure puzzles but the 3rd overdid it

S'funny, I found the 3rd one the most natural one to solve, the puzzles made sense to me. Whereas 4's "puzzles" didn't qualify for the term. I initially gave up on 4 for a good 2 years or so after breezing through the first island without stretching a brain muscle. Also Melee Island was laid out wrong, FFS.

RPS has two videos.

The remake art looks nice, except for the character sprites. They look daft- especialy Guybrush, and he seems to slide around rather than walk. Still, at least you'll get to hear the voice acting over the old art ;)

ps: I hope they got Phil Mitchell to do the voice of Shinetop. And whoever voiced Kip in Futurama for LeChuck's assistant ghost dude.

The 3d in the new episodic games seems to look and animate terribly. I hope the games are fun though. Let's hope it doesn't turn out like the last major Lucas revival? (Starwars 1-3)

Yeah, I read that. He thought it followed well in the spirit of it, if it wasn't quite the game he would've made. He was hoping that he could buy the rights of the MI name so he could make his 3rd game. Guess that ship's sailed now they've reinvigorated the trademark.

:this: I really don't like the graphics of the 3d games. They should have went for a more cel-shaded look. Just to think of a Monkey Island game in Wind Waker graphics style makes me shiver. Or they could have went through a more traditional 2d hand-painted style. But not this

Is Dominic Tomato doing the voice of Guybrush again? He's got a fairly decent food blog.

Hmm, he actually looks quite like Guybrush would if he dyed his hair darker.

Anyway, the answer's yes according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_of_M ... evelopment

Also, the Elaine actress from MI3 rather than the (American) one from MI4.

Given that there's clearly demand for proper adventure games again (given Telltale's runaway success), perhaps someone who's actually good at it could start making them again as opposed to Telltale churning out these 'almost' products?

Here's some science:

If you got Guybrush from MI...

and mixed him with Weirdo Guybrush from MI HD,
Image

You get Nicholas Brendan.

And fix the sodding title would you? >:|
