Don't get me wrong, I'd like everyone to wear top hats and flat caps again just like in the olden days, but check out the choice quotes at the bottom of this INTERESTING article:

There are only two reasons I leave the house without a hat -

1) It's incredibly windy.

2) I'm going to the cinema and don't want to hold my hat on my lap all the way through the film.

I hardly ever wear a hat, unless it is really sunny.

Unless a scrum cap counts..

And even if I am going to the cinema I'll probably take my hat, but leave it in the boot of the car.

Sometimes I do wonder what it'd be like to have a proper 1940s-esque suit, with optional waistcoat and matching hat. I used to be fascinated by my mother's tales of what proper people had to wear back when she was younger (up to and including the 1960s, when everyone suddenly decided that unpleasantly long hair and huge, gross facial hair was far more attractive - oh, and check out my avocado jacket and orange shirt!).

But then I think about how uncomfortable such things would be on a hot day like today.

I had my fill of hat-wearing novelty last time I was on holiday in Greece, where wearing a big Panama hat was the only thing between me and sunstroke.

I never wear hats at all, but that's mainly due to having a frankenstein-shape head - the last thing I want to do is to be drawing attention to my big head (fnar) by adding a few more inches (snurk).

I measured my head and it's half a centimetre short of "freakishly large" according to a hat sizing web page I found. Any bigger and I'd have been off the hat size chart.

My head is 63.5cm and the hat I have in that picture is only hat I found in Jackson Hole that actually fit.

The Hat Company in Chester are also very good. I think they've got a branch in Shrewsbury too, and that one doesn't smell of piss.

Yes it is very difficult to find a hat that fits if you have a large bulbous head.

I imagine.

Oof. My old hat cost about £80 there, I think, but that was about five years ago. I liked them because, though they're awfully posh, they didn't look down their noses at me and were very helpful to a hat noob like myself.

I think I'll stick with the range at M&S for the time being.

As for size, I appear to be a depressingly average 58cm

My head measures 48cm. You must all have beachballs for heads.

To be fair, I think Craig's head measurement is 20% hair.

There's only one way to find out. Shave his head while he's asleep. Just a band around the circumference. For research purposes.

It is the lack of brain material inside that means I need less room.

I think my head is only slightly smaller than the average, but my favourite two hats hats are from Accessorize's children's department.

Here's what the yarn standards charts give as 'average', though the few charts I have looked at seem to vary wildly:
Image

Babies heads are very small to pass through the birth canal, but then grow extremely rapidly, reaching almost full size when about 4 years old. despite what the chart says, many books say that a 4 year olds head is often 19", (I have lots of books on hats, not children's head sizes) The ratio of a child's head to body is funny when you line people up and look at them proportionally:

That's the way they test the age of children in certain countries, to see if they are old enough t be able to take vaccines against certain diseases.

Because in many countries in places like Africa people do not know the date of birth and age of their children, will sometimes lie about the age to get a vaccine not realising that taking it too early could be detrimental, or sometimes just where language differences are a barrier, the test involves seeing if the child's arm length to head ratio allows them to drape an arm over the top of their head and touch the ear on the other side - if they can do this then they are the right age to receive the vaccine - if their head is too big and their arms too short then they are still too young.

I have no idea why I know this.

My girlfriend's sister's boyfriend is from Zimbabwe, he does not know what his DOB is. Next time he visits I will measure his head so he can find out. Can you tell me the formula to work out DOB from head size please?

I think they just put down the 1st of Jan for his DOB, but the amount of hassle he has had with things like not having a birth certificate is untrue.

but then people are broke because of christmas. He should adopt 27th July. It's ace, i can confirm that. The only bad thing about it is that it was hard to keep in touch with most kids when i was in elementary school as it's very much deep into holidays. But i'm sure your friend doesn't have that problem.
