So, I finally took the plunge and bought a new PC. I’ve hooked it up and whilst confusing, Vista seems OK so far.

But here’s my problem..

I have 2 external hard drives, both are USB and are connected into the back of the PC. One has a mains plug (It’s old you see) and this one has an on/off switch. The other just plugs into 2 USB leads (one power and data, the other just power).

The problem I have is that when I power down my PC, both Hard drives stay on. The on/off switch doesn’t respond and the only way to power them down is to unplug them both from the USB leads.

Has anyone got any ideas of why this happens and how I can make it like my old PC in that the hard drives turn off when the PC is turned off?

Should be a setting in the BIOS somewhere to stop powering external devices when switched off.

That almost seems too easy! I'll try that when I get home. I've had a quick look round Google and I can't see anything else that would answer my query so this is the best idea I've got so far!

I put mine through a powered USB Hub, so I only have to undo one cable. If that helps.

I haven't a clue to be honest! It's that PC from Aldi though if that helps? I imagine not though...

Right.. So I've had a look in my BIOS, and I can't see anything instantly apparent as to what it would be? Can anyone suggest what I would be looking for? There's stuff in the power management section but they don't seem to relate to the power to the USB ports.
