Drunk.

Thinking about upcoming (aha) Pixar film 'Up'. Read Chud forum. Chud poster posted this in a post:

Quote:

Quote:
IT IS destined to be one of the hit films of the year and has become the first animated movie ever chosen to launch the Cannes festival. But the next cartoon from Disney's Pixar studio, called Up, has already been given the thumbs down by investors and toy manufacturers because its main character, a grumpy 78-year-old man, is not considered commercially attractive.
The reaction has prompted accusations of ageism at the multibillion-dollar promotions industry that surrounds films aimed at children.

.....

Although the film, which will have its world premiere in Cannes next month, is eagerly awaiting by critics, it has been getting a cool reception by financial analysts, some of whom urged investors to sell shares in parent company Disney. They fear Up will fail to earn much-needed cash from spin-off merchandising deals on everything from toys and clothes to food and soft drinks.
"We doubt younger boys will be that excited by the main character," said Richard Greenfield of Pali R

Bah! As subsequent Chud posters say, old man action figures would be great. Disney further says this:

Quote:
Robert Iger, chief executive of Disney, told critics earlier this month: "We seek to make great films first. If a great film gives birth to a franchise, we are the first company to leverage such success.

"A check-the-boxes approach to creativity is more likely to result in blandness and failure."

Which basically says, "Creativity is great, but we only put money into repeatedly market-driven proven things." Where's the gleeful risks, Disney? (And surely not that much of a risk? A few figures thrown out there won't break their bank.) Sure Pixar can do what they want, but that's only because their your critical flagship darling and because, more importantly, they draw in the crowds. They know more of what kids want than your marketing department. Boo-hiss, I add. Also drunkenly.

But yes, round to the subject of this thread, what kick-ass old fogeys are there out there? And what old duffers make top heroes/heroines and great withered Hans Molemenesque action figures? Do say.

I am quite drunk.

My Top 5 choices:

Walter Huston Grizzled Prospector action figure from Treasure of Sierra Madre, with shovel and mule and removable hat.

Ladykillers lovable old 'The Old Lady' Katie Johnson action figure with brolly and parrot. Action pan-hitting move.

Super villain 'It's a Wonderful Life' 'Old Man Potter' action figure in wheelchair, with Smithers-style assistant.

Wilfred Bramble.

'The Life & Death of Colonel Blimp' Colonel Blimp toy with 'flashback' changable head, belly and hair accessories. Relive a distinguished old fogey's life and learn the complexities of the old through the three stages of Colonel Blimp - rugged rascal Boer war youngster, avuncular sporting WWI chap and blustering WWII bald headed walrus. Blimp! Comes with bonus Fraser-from-Dad's-Army-but-slightly-younger-as-officer's-batman-and-butler-action-figure.

I am quite drunk. Misguidedly paid and went to 'Vegan Fayre' in Bristol. Despite hating veganism. Got drunk to compensate. Drunk.

I agree. The use of the word "random" is a bĂȘte noire of mine, and has been for a while. Especially when it is to do with people "my friends and I were out and got talking to some randoms" really, really makes me cross.

I think we need a new forum rule. Use 'Random' like this once; get a warning. Twice; 1 week ban. Third time; slow execution by Ghurkas whilst being sung to be Eoghan Quigg.

Does it still say that with sober eyes? It says the exact opposite to me.

I mean, naturally I assume that - given he's a CEO, of Disney no less - he's not telling the truth, but he's still not saying what you interpreted.

Yeah, it seems to see the opposite of what pete says it says.

Besides, just because it is a cartoon doesn't mean it is for kids. That is what really fucked me off about people talking about Wall-E. The themes in the film make is for adults more than kids.

But what about when you're playing against random people on GoW or L4D?

That's no random either, GoW matchmaking uses a complex algorithm based around Dude Huge's Awesomeness FactorTM.

Forgive me!

Forgive me!

I can't believe I did that. I blame my youthful drama student housemate, he keeps saying it all the fucking time and now I realise with horror that it is tainting my vocabulary. I ranted against the word too, many times in the before time. This is a lesson. Do not become complacent. Be vigilant!

I accept my warning. It will never happen again.

I have no issue whatsoever with the use of 'randoms' as a term for people you don't know, and have no intention of getting to know beyond the length of a 4-minute FPS session. They are effectively completely interchangeable and who they are matters fuck all, so the term is fine.

I meant in social situations, but I understand why you might struggle with this concept.

I'm racking my brain to think of a way I can truly insert a random element into this thread, to justify the subtitle. Rrgh.

Still disappointed how this admittedly justified grammar patrol is distracting from my righteous anger over release dates though.
